Is it really vital to update N95 Firmware? Come up with your views!

Is it really important to update N95 all the time to the latest firmware version?
What have those gained who updated to latest version, and what have those lost who are using the previous versions.

Is it really worth considering to update N95 while taking into account all the risks of phone turning into brick during process, non-functionality of all the previously installed 3rd Party software, and many more complications?

Does the new software really bring about dramatic changes to the N95 stability, start-up timings of the Java applications, improved menu structure, battery life etc. The presence of Flash Lite 3 may not be the key factor in updating N95.

What are the main plus points for N95 users to update their phones and
what are the main negative points that they should not go to update.

Please take part to discuss your good/ bad experiences in this regard in order to make other N95 users clear as to what should be done.

I've updated my N95-1 3 times and my N95-2 3 times and I've never once experienced the 'brick' syndrome, simply because I followed the instructions correctly. As to the benefits, other posts re updating speak for themselves. You gain a more stable phone together with the latest updates from Nokia so it must be good. I now have auto rotation on my N95-2 without the hassle of Symbian signing with rotateme. That in itself to me is worth the update.

All the benefits of updating firmware are well documented and surely a search will find them all without another discussion on the subject?
The bottom line is that if you do it correctly then yes it's worth it!
But, if you feel unsure in any way then get a service centre to do it for you.

how do you have auto rotation? which firmware is that? im on latest v15 arnt i?

Its not hard to flash your phone correctly, there's no reason not to do it. And all my software works as it did before the flash.

I always have problems after upgrading and also lose all my games, I have a 'contract' with the games people to protect them for £1 a month but it's still a pain as I usually get new games with the credits they give but the old ones can't be removed but no longer work, also the last time I did the upgrade it wouldn't load my saved data file so I had to set everything up from scratch.

when upgrading firmware, it depends what is in the change log for the new firmware. before demand paging was implemented, and then when it came out, it was almost a NECESSITY to update to that new firmware. demand paging was like a godsend. so it depends what changes were made, but mostly i say yes to update your firmware.

No, it's only on the latest N95 8Gb firmware (v20). No doubt it'll be introduced in the N95-1's next firmware though. Auto-rotation wouldn't be my reason for upgrading though, because I've already got rotateMe.

i do like rotateme but it's so sensitive, and if you turn it down it takes a good shake to get it to move, guess i need to mess about with it.

I used to have it set perfectly so the screen rotated just when you wanted to, like with the iTouch (My folks have got a couple so I can compare with theirs 😊 ) but then I installed v21 on my phone. I'll need to tweak mine again too! 😊

You WILL HAVE TO DEBRAND TO THE UNITED KINGDOM PRODUCT CODE TO GET THE UPDATE AT THE MOMENT THATS WHAT I DID ON MY N958GB TO GET THE V20 FIRMWARE

I used the NORWAY code of 0558086 and that works fine as well

I may be wrong but I read somewhere on this forum (i think!) that it will never be released on the N95-1 software updates. Also - I've had rotateME and the new ASR on the N95 8GB and believe me the ASR on my N95 8GB is a lot smoother and faster and less sensitive than Samirs product imo

I'm sure it would be smoother. It's not a seperate app running in the background but something embedded into the firmware.

If you find the thread where you heard this would never be introduced to the N95-1, let us know.

my phone is an unlocked n95 8gb bought from Nokia.co.uk its unlocked. I'd rather wait for the euro1 to have the firmware than changing product codes.

euro1 now avialable

Just noticed auto rotation now... guess my hangover was more evil that first suspected. For me updating the firmware was a godsend, but I was debranding the phone which is much nicer now with all the voda guff off it.
