Speed of composing SMS

Hey guys.

I'm pretty infuriated with the time it takes from hitting the "new sms" button to the compose window being open and usable. I clock it at 4 seconds on a good day... it feels INCREDIBLY sluggish.

All it has to do is open a text editor. Why can't all the processing be done on the back end (when you hit send?). Does anyone know of an alternative?

Thanks,
Ian

Where have you put the New SMS shortcut? If it's on the left soft key on the standby screen then the delay is actually intentional. Whenever you press this button, the phone first waits for a second or 2 to see if you're going to press the * button (which you would if you wanted to lock the keypad). Only then it launches the SMS editor.

This is one of the things that's always been there and that I always found incredibly dumb in the S60 UI. Most people won't realize why it takes so long whenever they press this key and will just think that the phone is sluggish.

You could move the shortcut to the other soft key. Or to the shortcut bar at the top. In most cases, answering to an existing SMS is quicker than writing a new SMS from scratch anyway.

Do you have Software Conversation from BetaLabs in your E90?

To me it was disastrous!

All the software are trivial operation in the E90 became very slow!

Hi Omroth

I don't send SMS's at all but the good news is with the latest firmware V200.34.73 there is no lag or delay at all although this firmware is currently only available for some APAC and Indian codes. At least you know once it rolls out for all firmwares you will no longer have this problem and it s not just SMS speed that has increased all functions are now much faster IMO.

Marc

That sounds like good information, thanks Elp. I can't find the settings for changing those keys, could you help me out?

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Omroth,

It depends if you have Active standby enabled but it all begins in:

Tools > Settings > General > Personalisation > Standby mode

Check if you have Active standby set to On. If you do, then you can't use the navigation keys as shortcuts to different phone functions. But you can still assign the left and right selection keys as shortcuts. Aside from these keys you can assign Active standby apps and Active standby plug-ins which are like computer desktop icons and alerts.

This is the usual factory/default setting wen you buy the phone. Elp is referring to the shortcuts available when the Active standby set to Off. Try exploring these options and settings in your phone and see if it helps you.

Cheers.

Haven't you heard talking about a new invention Nokia made that is called "Manuals"... You can learn something with that thing...

I have now changed the New SMS shortcut to the right cursor key... but I still have the huge delay! Any advice?

Omroth - you're not saying if you've loaded Nokia's 'Conversation' or if you've loaded up the latest Firmware. The advice already given is good. You also haven't said when you last turned your phone off and on again - waiting a minute between the two. Do you have apps loaded onto the memory card or phone's memory? Are other apps running efficiently? Have you established that you have plenty of free RAM available by using 'nsysinfo' or Nokia's 'devicestatus'. How many hundreds of SMS messages do you have in memory? Are you one who never deletes any?

The phone shold be able to cope with all these demands, but this *is* the real world and any of these factors could have an effect. I fairly cane my memory but if I open Messaging then Create Messge, it's open in less than a second. Less than half a second.

Maybe it is time to have a cleanout? Going by your previous comment about not knowing how to change the Active Standby Apps, I guess it's also possible that you're not aware of Firmware updates and realising that sometimes with these bits of kit you really do have to 'start again' to really clear things out.
*#7370# (after saving any essential data somewhere) is really your best bet firstly. Though I'm not a great fan of 'backing up' apps and the like and 'restoring' them - in my experience, you tend to 'restore' the problem with everything else, if there is one. Reinstalling apps from the original SIS files is a much better bet in tandem with using the 'transfer' app to backup SMS and a whole bunch of other stuff to another S60 phone (if you have one).
