Hi All been using my N95 for some time but to be honest the GPS has never really worked too well in comparison with a portable sat nav. I don't need it to be perfect but it would be handy to have for the odd occasion I need it and not have to bother taking out another device.
My phone is now really slow to aquire sats a chap in the office has just got a Nokia N82 which can get a lock in the office that I have no chance of getting on the N95.
Does the N82 have a better GPS engine ? and have Tom Tom finally got a system working on a Nokia yet if not can anyone recommend the best alternative.
Getting a good GPS along with a decent camera and wifi will influence my decision on next phone, contract renewal not too far away.
Thanks
Zeberdy
garmin is the best gps app because it supports internal gps.
and my n95 gets fast 10 second locks and holds the signal very well for me. the n82 and n95 have the same gps chip i believe. are you sure you are keeping the slider open when using GPS on the n95? the antenna is located beneath the ZERO key. mine works flawless, pretty close to my factory navigation in my car.
unfortunaly thats the case zeberdy. my tomtom unit is mileeesss better than my n958gb. theres absolutely no comparison. signal wise, ease of use, screen size, instructions.
as far as i know there is no difference to the gps unit in the n95 and n82. perhaps your colleague had the assisted gps on meaning that the device acquired position with the help of the internet.
Thanks for the info,
Interesting that the N82 uses same GPS chip as N95 having seen my mates in action it was much better I also have network assisted GPS turned on but have never managed a lock in the house or office that his will do.
Thanks
Zeberdy
Zeb,
Before you do anything rash, make sure you go to the Nokia website and download the latest version of Nokia maps.
I was the same as you and not too impressed with the maps really, and getting it to get the satellite fix was often a nightmare and took ages. However, after downloading the latest version, you get the satellite fix after about 10 seconds, if not before. You can tell the difference because it looks better and says "Nokia Maps" when you start it up, and instead of those two curved lines (or dreaded red x) next to the satellite dish option you get three green lights to show theres a fix. And flashing amber lights when it's fixing on them. It really is pretty good now.
You will find that the AGPS lock on times have improved dramatically from V12 to V20 and again to V21. On V21, I get locks between 8 seconds to 30 seconds at the worst case scenario.
my n95 8GB gets satellite locks in about 10-15 seconds every time. i think the n82 hardware is identical. also i agree about nokia maps v1.2 its not the best. but the new v2.0 is majorly improved. really i use GArmin though which is better than any nokia maps app.
im impressed with n95 8gb and nokia maps
All,
I have N95-3 (RM-160) with firmware 11.2.009 (latest version) and I can never get GPS lock under 30 minutes. I don't know if this is chip issue or just lacking the latest firmware (non-US version have firmware numbering 20.xx), but my friends N95 (same version) have the same issue.
I went up my office building rooftop (20 floors), clear sky, point the phone upward with slider open and not covering the "0" key, still no GPS lock.
I heard that sending the N95 to Nokia for repair for US market does nothing because they'll just re-flash the firmware and send it back.
