Hi all,
I haven't had a Symbian phone for a few years now as I've been very happy with WinMo devices but the E90 looks quite tempting..
A few questions though:
1) I have my own Exchange server which Syncs with WM no problems - not just email but contacts and calendar are kept constantly up to date. Does this work out of the box with the E90? If not can it work with additional software? Paid for or free?
2) My choice of GPS is CoPilot - they are releasing a Symbian version and I should get my DVD any day so I need to confirm it will run on the E90, as it hasn't actually been released yet I don't spouse anyone here can confirm it works OK?
3) My current device has a 5" VGA screen - how does the E90's smaller screen compare?
4) Can anyone confirm the specs at http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_e90-1857.php are correct - in particular HSDPA, 3.6 Mbps - not 7.2? and microSD (TransFlash), up to 8GB, will it take larger SDHC cards when they become available (16Gb is due out soon)
5) How much software is available compared to WM? I know it's S60 based and there is quite a bit available for that, not sure how much compared to WM and does it all run on the larger screen of the E90. How much freeware is there for this platform?
6) how is the built in GPS - any problems? I'm used to one that just works. I assume Google maps works OK and if that does I'm sure CoPilot will.
7) How is the Browser (I believe Safari?) compared to Opera 9.5?
8) Anyone else made the jump from WinMo? If so, what do I have to look out for? What disadvantages are there?
Thanks for reading.
1. You need Mail for Exchange, which is a free download from Nokia website.
2. I have Copilot 7 on my E90, it work fine on external screen but only displays on the left half of the internal screen. It does use the internal GPS. I have spoken to ALK, but they tell me Nokia E90 is not a compatible device as far as they are concern.
3. I have moved from a VGA E-ten X800, the browsing experience on E90 is great, especially with the new firmware which allows video playbacks on BBC news, you tube amost other sites.
4. I am using a 8GB Sandisk micro-sd without any problem. Not sure about the HSDPA speed, sorry.
5. This is one thing I miss from Windows Mobile, the lack of software and decent software. I am still having problem finding a decent FTP software. I used to use Resco File Explorer.
6. In-built GPS is good. It works fine with Google Map, Copilot 7, McGuider and Garmin Mobile XT. I haven't try any other GPS software, apart from Tomtom 6 which does not work with the inbuilt GPS.
7. I love the browser much much better than Opera Mobile 9.5 beta, in my opinion.
8. The only disadvantage that I can think of is the lack of software available.
Hope this is of help to you.
Yes, great help. Many thanks.
Another quicky - can apps be installed to a memory card?
Thanks
Sure; you can generally choose at installation to time whether to put it in phone memory or a memory card.
Technically, the developer can choose for you and force a specific location, but generally they don't.
Well, E90 bought from fleabay - if it arrives and works I guess I could become a regular here!
Welcome to the most amazing world: Symbian S60!
just to add my penny's worth, i've jumped between windows mobile and s60 a few times along the way, and the end user experience is a personal thing, but for me s60 is a lot more logically set out and generally a lot more reliable than any windows mobile phone/device i've owned, that is once you've upgraded the software a few times to iron out the bugs. I don't think there's quite so much software available for s60 as there is for windows but new stuff is ccoming out all the while. I recently upgraded to an e90 from an n95 and was very tempted to go for a win mobile device but i'm glad i didn't now, oh and btw most apps scale ok to the e90's screen but some don't, especially java apps i've found. Hope you enjoy your e90 😊
