Please Help - N95 in Distress!

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, my phone seems to have given up on life. I was sending a text message to my friend when all of a sudden the screen went blank and the phone turned off.

As of now, I can get it to turn on and most of the keys make sounds, but the screen is completely blank, it remains black and although I can now here the start-up sound, I still can't see anything.

Having read up on what to do, I attempted every possible 'Reset' there is. I tried the green * and 3 one, the code *#7370#, taking the battery out and trying again. Nothing I do seems to make the screen turn on, and the worst bit about it is I can't even perform the resets properly because I can't see anything on the phone! Also, I've just noticed that the phone isn't actually turning off, and if I take the battery out and put it back in, it automatically powers up but without the screen, will this effect the 'reset' function above as it says you need to press the three buttons in conjunction with turning the phone on, and I don't think mine is ever off now.

I can here a loud beep every now and then if I hold the power button and mess around, I'm at a complete loss of what to do. I updated the phone with a few themes months back and haven't had any problems since. I've embraced the reality of losing most of my contacts etc saved to the phone, but I would love it if anyone could help me out with a possible solution, it's just I can't return it because I brought it from someone, not a shop.

If anyone can help, I will be eternally grateful.

Hello again.

A little update. I removed the battery and let it rest for a while, when I turned it back on and attempted the reset again using *, 3 and green, the Nokia white-screen start up logo came on for the first time in hours. After that, it didn't do much else, but surely this means the phone isn't completely bricked if the screen was capable of turning on for a short period.

Also, when I tried it again, the screen faded to black with the nokia logo in writing slowly dissapearing. Now I'll admit that when I first saw the white screen, I abandoned the reset function thinking it had suddenly started to work again, is it possible that has made it worse?

So I've left it now with the battery outside of the phone as it seemed to work, albeit minimally, before.

i would take it to a Nokia Service Centre if it is still under warranty or contact your network and get a repair/replacement from them

I can not do that since I brought the phone off a friend. My network will not give me a replacement or repair it, since I brought a different phone for my contract which I now do not use.

You do not need proof of purchase in the UK (and probably all of mainland Europe). The N95 is covered by a 2yr warranty.

If you are in the UK, you can send the phone back for repair using the Freepost form available at http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4767799#

Provided the handset is under 24 months old (all N95's currently are!) then Nokia should repair and return the phone free of charge. Please remember to get a (free) proof of postage form from the post office, as Nokia will replace the handset if it goes missing in the post and you can prove it was sent to their official repair centre.

One last thing, if you (or your friend) have de-branded the firmware, there's a good chance the NCC Engineer will discover this fact and invalidate your warranty.

Use the TV out cables to check that the phone is at least functioning correctly. It sounds like you may have either a faulty LCD, or loose ribbon connector, either way, both can be fixed for less that 30GBP. There are guides on how to change the LCD over on N95users.com

Thanks for the quick replies everyone, much appreciated.

Also, for anyone interested, I managed to get my phone to work for a while by leaving it in a bowl of rice funnily enough encase it had someone absorbed some liquid. I was able to do a reset, but the screen still randomly turns off although the phone itself remains functional. I obviously can't use a phone that only works half the time, so I will be sending it back (Hopefully).

I forgot to mention my phone is a Nokia N95 8GB model and it is still on Vodafone although my sim is T-Mobile. Everything still says Vodafone etc in the phone menus and what not, so that means it's not been de-branded right?

Would this still be eligible for your freepost idea as this is the best suggestion so far.
