announced today
here is a comparation between 9210 and 9210i
from http//www.nokia.com/phones/9210i/faq_upgrade.html
<b>Is there a way to upgrade my Nokia 9210 Communicator into the Nokia 9210i Communicator?</b>
No, you cannot upgrade the Nokia 9210 Communicator into the Nokia 9210i Communicator, because these are two separate products with different hardware.
Total memory 40MB
Application memory 16MB
User memory 16 MB
Execution memory 8MB (SD-RAM)
8Mb!!!!

Interesting, very interesting... ![]()
and there's a GPS unit for it...

But no GPRS
I am not shocked
-Its not a gram lighter.
-The standby is not a minute longer.
-Internet was and (to my opinion) is still too primitive.
-No MP3; no stereo.
-Macro flash player is childrens toy.
-Memory problems I don't have ( any more after 3.14, which is superb)
-Is the processor faster? With a faster clock?
In that case maybe I try to trade in mine.
Huib
Yeah there is something to be said for being disappointed, to be honest I think the main reason for this is to add more memory to allow them to release the Soccer and Golf games! Oh yeah and to run Opera which is the new browser.
Seriously though there is no MP3 because they think we dont want it. Itaimed at Business users I guess. Personally its not something I'd use.
Battery - yeah true, but it is aready good.
Rafe
I don't think this offers me enough to tempt me to upgrade. It still does not have GPRS and is not triband.
The improved web is good but most of the stuff I use is on WAP which is cheaper to use (comes of my standard minutes).
I think I will wait for a true 3G keyboard based device. The only think that annoys me is that most of the new software will probably not run on the old phone.
Andy
Well, lets not get misunderstood. I am enormously enthousiast about the 9210.
I use it full time.
I love applications like Active Desk.
Now I am playing with Ximplify Mylist, which I use as a brainstorming tool during meetings. I used to have it on the Macintosh under the name Acta. Couldn't find it anymore and here it is!
MS Word has the same option, called Outlinefar too complicated for me.
Only the cut and paste in Mylist is a little unhandy (prefer a move button) but a very nice tool.
And that for a few dollars (more). I have no stocks nor friends over there!
I see however no reason to jump in the 9210i now.
or maybe????????
Huib van den Oever
I'd agree with you. There is no compeliing reason to upgrade. I do think it makes it more attractive to new users though. Should be good for all of us since almost all applications will be compatiable.
I hope you downloaded myList from this site (that way I get commission if you register
).
Yeah I'd have to agree with you on Active Desk - seems like the best app for the 9210 at the moment. I use something similar on a Psion and its great.
Rafe
Sorry sir, I bought it directly from them.
Next time I will be a better boy!
Huib
ahh well never mind ! ![]()
The general sentiments here seem to be that it is more attractive for potential new users but not enough to make existing 9210 users upgrade (though, if Nokia were to offer a part-ex scheme, I may be tempted).
Hopefully, when the 9290 finally makes it to the US, it will be specced up to a 9290i equivalent.
But there still isn't enough Execute RAM (IMHO)! I had tonnes on my Series5<I>mx</I>, so what's up with getting a bit o'juice into this beautiful machine?
Also, I am a little disappointed that this is to be the target of the up'n'coming games. I was looking forward to those
But my buggest gripes are 1) Still not enough RAM 2) Still No GPRS
(I don't care about the MP3, that's for Micro$oft fanboys).
Never mind... ever onward, ever upward and any improvement on the statuis quo is, well, an imporvement on the status quo!
Nice one Nokia!<font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by TANKERx on 2002-03-12 1614 ]</font>
Personally I don't care about mp3/music on it, the quality is poor, hence why I have an MD player instead of an MP3 player in my pocket. Sorry but I'm 100% for "Where the F*CK do I sign up for one......." NOW! Heh, I guess I'm overexcited it was kind of obvious that this announcement was coming though....
As for no GPRS, it's got HSCSD, that's good enough for me (but then I'm on Orange
)
real nice.
2 weeks after i get a 9210 this comes out
Ok, I've just been to Nokia's website and the photos show it exactly the same as the 9210
I was hoping for some cosmetic changes (x-press on covers perhaps
). Seriously though, I would like, deeper blue LEDs (the light blue is weak), and get rid of the pointless folding out arial. That said, still can't wait for it, Q2 2k2 then, hmms....
/me saves pennies, and thinks Rafe should rename his 9210 saving fund ![]()
I've come into a little inheritance and am currently waiting for the 7650 to compliment my 9210.
But I've just visited http//news.com.com/2100-1040-857743.html?legacy=cnet&tag=pt.msnbc.feed..ne_9059885 and wow, are Nokia releaseing some kit!!??
Listed in the article are the 7210, 9210i, 3510 & 3410 (3D graphics engine!?), 3315 and the 6310i.
I've come to the conclusion that if you type <a href="http//www.nokia.com/phones/<I>xxxx</I>" target="_blank">http//www.nokia.com/phones/<I>xxxx</I></a> (where <I>xxxx</I> are any four numbers of your choice), you're likely to stumble across a new Nokia phone
.
But not much Symbian. That's a shame.... but it could be worse, Nokia could be looking to M$ (now that would be a disaster).<font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by TANKERx on 2002-03-12 1713 ]</font>
I talked with Nokia and they are in a meeting talking if they are going to be able to upgrade the 9210 to 9210i (faster and more RAM)...
Well I don't... I'm just going to wait and see!!! ![]()
Coolmatter
Let us know what you learn, won't you?
Please!?
Hi everyone .. i agree that the new 9210i is not worth investing in, i'm happy with my 9210 right now as it does everything i need (so far)
, but i do think that Nokia should think about the customers who bought the 9210 and want to upgrade or update there 9210 as what happend when they released the 9110i, all you had to do is go to thier fourn and download the Picture Messaging software and the other two software and thats it your 9110 became a 9110i.
...Provided that we are not asked to buy any upgrade from http//www.softwaremarket.nokia.com/ or the unbelievable http//www.mynokiacommunicator.com...
Do NOKIA customers deserve all that claptrap? ![]()
I read many suggestions, good and bad, but isn't there someone who is waiting for a touchscreen?
I know i do!!!
Or is it possible we never get one?
Ren
It's funny you should say that because before I got my 9210, I was concerned about the lack of touch screen.
I'm amazed at how much I don't notice it... in fact, as I see it, the lack of touch screen is notable by the absence of finger marks and scratches on the screen.
If there were a touch screen, developers may be tempted to base their UI on it and thus make the Communicator less convenient (I have learned to thumb my way around the device - cool!).
Sorry Rene, a touchscreen is no use.
I did a lot of experimenting with those screens.
They have their use but not on machines with this size.
Pushin my thumbs on that screen will always give automatically a "select all" in my case.

what I ment was a touchscreen like on the psion, with a pen.
In that case you don't have to worry about finger marks on the screen and the possibility's and speed to work around the menu's and the application's would only be improved!
Ren
Rene, to be honest I don't feel it's needed, the 9210 can be navigated fast enough without one. Yes it'll make things like web browsing easier and graphic editing possible, but for how it's used atm, a touchscreen is neither needed or missed.
I had a palmtop and I didn't like the touchscreen so I don't miss it and I don't wont it!!!!!
Now about 9210(i) the only thing that it would made it buy it is the more memory...
I'm still waiting for a reply from Nokia if we can upgrade it for a cost of course...
Anyway... I'm very happy with 9210 and I like it just the way it is!!!

For software upgrade.. dont know yet (when 9210i comes..then i know)
For now i am running Opera (Opera for EPOC 6.0 (65)) in my 9210 and works great.
