iphone 3G vs N95

58 replies · 12,589 views · Started 10 June 2008

Feel like starting up a flame war.. here goes:

http://www.gsmarena.com/iphone_is_dead_long_live_the_iphone_3g-news-520.php

Looks like the official announcement has been made.

its cheap.. $199 for 8GB (according to marketing slur) - but that's with
a contract.. hhahahahahaha

even at the cheapest plan ($29 for 24 months), its still going to be
$900 all up (in Australia at least)

Still a BAD camera (2Mpix) and no video recording, no stereo bluetooth,
no battery change, sim locked to network (without jailbreak)

Good things is added GPS (but no software other than google maps..
hhahahahah - all thru internet connection$$) and 3G (but no HSDPA),
Asian language support, new Exchange Push functions, great battery life,
looks "good" (if you are that way inclined)..

Come on man.. N95 has been out for 18 months and still playing
catchups.. 😊 😊

They say it has GPS but it is not true GPS. My brother has the first Iphone and he tries to compete with my N95 8Gb and it looks like the new Iphone came closer but still no cigar, ha ha ha.

you won't find too many apple fanboys around here 😊

Seriously I was hoping the new iPhone was going to be great.. but I'm not too surprised that they haven't done much more than add 3G and GPS .. apparently TomTom will be available for the iPhone .. but no idea when or how much.

I wasn't overly disappointed - I didn't want to buy one and now it looks like there is no incentive to do so.

Nope - no flames from me .. just happy N series thoughts N79 touch screen .. N85 .. VGA screen .. N96 .. bells and whistles 😊

.. waits ..

Point taken..

But the terrible thing is that Steve Jobs STILL compares it against the N95 and claims that the 3G on the iphone is faster.. How does that work given that it is 3G Iphone and not HSDPA? The guy seriously talks a lot of shite and is falsely advertising the iphoney..

lots of people still claim touch screen is better - but has anyone noticed the latest trends in the Windows mobile phones? Yes, a lot of the models have been succeeded by newer ones that has physical buttons. Non tactile feedback on touch screens really suck as you can press the wrong buttons without knowing (since you cant really feel the area of it). HTCs, Imates and Samsungs have all gone back to giving an option to use buttons as well (along with Windows Mobile "standard" or smartphone edition getting more popular)..

I just hope that the true N95 replacement (I dont consider N96 as the replacement given some of its shortfalls) has both touch and flip out buttons to maintain the best flexibility..

Seeing as it is going to be subsidised this time, theres no way your just going to be able to take it away without actually signing up to a contract.

Nothing has suprised me about the specs, its typical apple marketing.

Its better than the previous version, but still way behind most other high end phones.

And before anyone starts ranting about how bad apple are, remember that they are making a lot of money from overpriced stuff, everytime.

According to gsmarena, and a few other reports, the new iPhone is 3.5G HSDPA.

http://www.mobilegazette.com/apple-iphone-3g-08x06x09.htm

Having said that, it does appear to be bigger (about 1 mm on all dimensions) than the iPhone-1.

2 megapixel camera with no flash and no video recording....what's that about eh???

Still no MMS (picture messaging) or Copy and Paste.

Still no voice dialling.

Restricted Bluetooth.

No secondary camera for video calling.

After all the hype surrounding the iPhone-1 before its launch last year with Steve Jobs telling us that "iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone," and then the subsequent reality check when it was found to be nothing of the sort and had to be reduced in price time and time again, I will wait until I, or reviewers, can get our hands on one when they are released on 11th July.

It does occur to me that with sales of only 6 million iPhone-1 in a year, most of those in the last 3-4 months since the drastic price slashes to get rid of them off of the retailers shelves, that the biggest kick in the teeth has to be to those people who paid 269 a shortwhile ago for the 2G to find out that the 3/3.5G is only 100.

Looks like O2 wont be taking the p*ss either with the tariffs.

The new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our 45 and 75 tariffs. And it's just 99 on our 35 tariff and new 30 tariff

They are also going to be offering free upgrades to existing iphone customers and a PAYG offering!

looks like apple are going for world domination with simultaneous release initially in 22 countries, then up to 75.

Its a damn shame really, I've never been platform loyal and having had a play with an iphone i thought it was pretty nice, but I couldn't live without the N95 toys; this new version ticks some more boxes with HSDPA and GPS/AGPS but the camera is still crap and basics like MMS and video are unforgiveable.

Interesting still that after 18 months into its life, the N95 is still an overall better phone than even the new super hyped, super marketed iphone. Just goes to prove how well Nokia did back in the time.

what will Nokia release to counter? probably leak more info on their touch /gesture solution they are working on in the next S60.. They have to counter with these info so that they dont lose market share or stock value, right?

hmm.. Apple stock prices hasnt jumped as I thought they might have.. ($181 USD and peaked about 3-4 days ago at $190 USD).

Why does everyone bash Apple so much? I really don't get it.

In terms of interface I agree with them that the iPhone is about 5 years ahead of its time. It's amazing! I know that the phone is lacking some features (most of which can be added if you look around: video recording, bluetooth, MMS, etc), but what it does do it does very very well. I'd far far rather watch a movie or listen to music on an iPhone than on an N95!

Apple really innovated when they designed the iPhone. Sure the hardware is nothing great but the interface is so intuative and something that no one had ever done before. I remember when I first saw it thinking "Wow". And just look at all of the manufacturers trying to catch up with their touch interfaces now. LG, Samsung, Nokia and even HTC are trying to mimic it with their Diamond and Raphael handsets.

On the other hand you have the N95. A very good phone indeed with lots of good features but there's no innovation there on Nokia's part. There's nothing in it that hasn't been done before, it's just the bringing together of different features by Nokia for the first time. GPS has been on Windows Mobile for years. Phones with 5MP cameras were out in Korea about 3 years ago. HSDPA has been in Windows Mobile since the TYTN if not before. Wifi has been on lots of other nokia and windows phones.

I know I'm going to get a load of abuse for this post but there you go. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but then I'm not a Nokia fanboy either. I'm not going to buy another Nokia out of a sense of loyalty to them, they should work for my money. Let see what they can pull out of the bag.

Aurial wrote:Why does everyone bash Apple so much? I really don't get it.

Because, first and foremost this is an N95 section. Since the iphone is technically inferior featurewise and hardwarewise, people are going to bash it.

I do agree that the interface is very good though.

Secondly, Mr Jobs advertised it as a smartphone, which is highly debatable.

Third, its expensive for what it is. Get something with similar hardware specs on contracts that high and you'll see its a lot.

On the other hand you have the N95. A very good phone indeed with lots of good features but there's no innovation there on Nokia's part.

But there your wrong. Many people dont realise it, but nokia specialise in convergance devices. Sure, wifi, 3G, highend cameras were about on phones, even GPS to a very select few.

But was there anything that had all of that combined? Is there anything that has that all combined in a decent form factor apart from nokia phones? Not really.

Im not saying the iphone is bad, its not. Its just that as per usual, its been way overhyped (which down to earth people hate), and it costs just a bit too much for what it actually does.

I think its very good, akin to a kick up the ass for makers like nokia and samsung to start thinking about their interface.

Im not a Nokia fanboy by any means, Ive looked at plenty of WM devices.

However, it always comes down to the same argument for me. Theres nothing with the features I want in a normal mobile sized form factor.

This is especially true with the upcoming 6220 classic. If anyone can find me a phone with the same form factor, with the same features, Id be extremely suprised.

If I could make the quick analogy: The iphone is like a Ford Mustang GT, it is a nice quick car and all, but everyone and thier grandma has one. Versus the N95 which is like a Corvette Z06, which is a true crazy fast supercar.

apple have always pushed their lower spec'd hardware as being the top of the market.

look at the iPod, the gadget show has said there are better MP3 players on the market but nothing has the software backing which the iPod has.

the thing that gets me is MS were done for anti competition by including IE with windows and making it the default. why hasn't apple been done for not allowing other MP3 players to work with iTunes?

and I'm not sure that other players don't work with iTunes .. they mightn't work without a PC in the way like say the iPod touch but you can still buy tunes and stick them on your device .. 😊

Exactly... convergence... multimedia computer...

Call it what you will Nokia's Smartphones (as well as Windows Smartphones) are so far ahead of Apple in technology terms that the iPhone is massively over-hyped.

Yes, Nokia probably should embrace touch-screen technology in their next big thing product, then the iPhone will be "outed" for everyone to see as nowt special.

Unfortunately, Nokia just missed the boat by not incliding touch-screen in the forthcoming N96...

I think a lot of it can be explained by the arrogance that Apple often displays and the hype that goes around a lot of Apple products (e.g. the famous Jobs 5 years ahead quote). This tends to wind up people who are not part of the Apple flock or who have a different opinion. This extends to the conclusions that some people draw (e.g. Apple will kill Nokia).

On the whole people on this site aren't that militant (in my experience) compared to others. (I'm basing this both on the forums contents and the colourful emails I receive).

I agree with you - you have to wait to see what comes next and ultimately its a personal subjective decision.

Last november I went and got myself an iPhone. Apart from feeling a sense of superiority. The fact I had actually bought a dud phone was becoming a reality.

I missed SOO many features that the N95 just handled so beautifully. Just the simple things like MMS and taking very impressive photos.

The point came a few weeks ago when I just said goodbye to my love hate affair and opened my arms to the N95 8GB which I am very happy with!

Would I buy an iPhone 3g?

No. They have hardly added anything. It's appalling how they get away with it. And this one will sell even more as the prices are even lower than last year.

I just never felt that Apple really did care for its customers. They never addressed the little niggly bugs and features that we all yearned for. And even now, after releasing the second generation iPhone, they still can't come up with what is standard on a 2 year old phone.

You mean everybody in your country has a FM GT. In my country everybody has a Corvette Z06 😉

MaciekBora wrote:You mean everybody in your country has a FM GT. In my country everybody has a Corvette Z06 😉

I live in California and I see old ladies driving in GT's on a daily basis. Z06's are alot harder to come by, especially the newer ones.
My brother has an Iphone and we are always getting into heated arguements of which one is better, but his whole arguement is based around the touchscreen feature.

I have to admit that the touch screen looks impressive.
However, why not ask him to take a photo of you in a club or pub and then either MMS or Bluetooth it to you. You could also ask him to play some music over the iPhones speaker and compare it with yours.
In my country we would call the iPhone a "One trick pony."

I can't comment on the speakers but you can get software for the iPhone that allows the sending and receiving of MMS, and also software to allow the sending of files via bluetooth.

Aurial wrote:I can't comment on the speakers but you can get software for the iPhone that allows the sending and receiving of MMS, and also software to allow the sending of files via bluetooth.

I stand corrected. Thank you.

Is there any third party software for taking video's, video calling, copy and paste, camera flash or 5 mega pixel photo's yet?

I think this argument will go on for a very long time, the same as the Mac vs the PC etc.

I admit I've never used an iPhone and can't comment on it, I have tried the touch interface on my mates ipod touch. It is really impressive.

However, it does look like the iPhone is a one trick pony, the interface is years ahead of anything, but it doesn't seem to do anything even the basic of phones do. I personally think its features are at the same level as the K750i, just with a touch screen.

The only thing that gets me with this is, people who support Apple are so sure that everything they do is the best ever, which if they really open their eyes, would realise theres alot of very similar phones which can be picked up for free on any contract from any network.

The only time I would think about an iPhone is when it really is the best on the market, as the N95 has been for such a long time!

Ive long said I havent got a problem with apple stuff, just a problem with the attitude that so often comes with it. For some reason it appears to have a more fanatical fanbase than other companies.

Like you bartmanekul, I don't have a problem with Apple or iPhone in general.
However, when Steve Job's stood on stage and announced the iPhone in January 2007 and told the world, "iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone,"
I at least expected a product that would back that earth shattering statement up. I then endured 6 months of taunts and jibes from Apple Mac owners telling me that the N95 was a dinosaur, prehistoric, outdated, etc: (All this without knowing the spec's of the device, such is Apple's secrecy)

Then the iPhone was finally released and I, and many others, discovered that it was in no way 5 years ahead of any other phone or indeed magical or revolutionary. Infact, so poor were the sales of the device that 69 days after launch the price was slashed and Apple were forced to give money back.

Therefore, anything Steve Jobs says these days I take with a very, very, large pinch of salt and will wait until the iPhone 3G is released before shouting too loudly about it.

Haha.

There is for recording videos and copy/paste. Maybe I'll download the SDK and write some for the video calling. It'll probably require the use of a mirror though. 😊

Aurial wrote:Haha.

Then why aren't these incorporated in the iPhone?

I don't know. I'll be the first to admit that it's sorely lacking some features out of the box.

I've been doing a bit of reading on it over the past couple of days because I'm sorry to say that I'm tempted to go over to the dark side. Mainly because I was in the market for an iPod Touch before the announcement for use on long journeys and quiet periods at work which can be long and boring.

Most of the criticisms I had of the original have now either been addressed in the new version, or by third party downloads. It does have some very impressive software available out there. They've got Quake 3: Arena running on it in OpenGL, and network playable for example.

The thing that is making me question it though is the camera which is utterly dire compared to my N95. I have to think long and hard now about whether I can live without it.

Other than that and the lack of the forward facing camera (which I have never once used on my N95) there isn't really a lot in it. As I said I can add Bluetooth support, video recording, MMS support, etc by software. It's lacking flash in but then the only time that ever seems to work on my N95 is on youtube and even then the implimentation is quite poor.

I have a lot to think about.
