Steve Reviews the Newly Announced Nokia E71

Though the build quality of my E71 is nearly perfect, there is one issue. The volume keys do make a sound as if they where a little loose. Dropping my E71 on the table always gives a little vibrating sound. Is it just just mine, or does anyone else have noticed this?

may i know what screenshot software used to capture the screen on E71? hoping to use E71 for blogging and currently use Scribe to post to wordpress, but can't directly upload image from the application.

Hi,
I own a Palm Treo 650 device and despite is lack of new features, I couldn't find any new smart phone that is as easy to use as the treo and palm OS interface.
Considering replacing my 4 years old treo that I love I was wondering if this smart phone is easy to use for the common functionality such as contact search, dialing a number, voice mail and text messaging.
If anyone had use both phones I would love to view a comparison in term of functionality.
Thanks,
Palm user

I'm on my SECOND Nokia E71, after returning the first one. Why did I return it? Well, I had an E51 prior to this, which worked perfectly, and I expected a similar level of performance from the E71. But the middle four way navigation key has an issue. Whatever direction you click it, it should give solid, clear, crisp beeps. Even if you hold the key in one direction, the rapid beeping should be clear and consistent. But on the new E71, every few beeps, instead of a clear sound, you get what sounds like a beep with a crackling noise, as if the speaker is bad, or there is a short in the nav key.

So, Im wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Should I return the second one now? Im very disappointed, and have resorted to turning off the keypad beeps, just so I dont here that noise and get irritated over and over again.

My E71 doesn't recognise wmv and mpeg files that I open from my email and will not play them in Realplayer. What do I need to do to view these videos?

Please, can anyone help?

Steve,
That was an exceptional review! Quite impressed with this new product.

I was a little taken back when you say:

"there's a legacy infrared port, good to see as it's still of use for contact beaming in companies where older Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds are found".

I think that comment is a little dated (old school?) - I know people (me too) who have been beaming ringtones, photos and small music files (larger ones take too long). I hear there are new Japanese phones with faster 4Mbps infrared - when are we going to get these here?

Hi, I have just read your detailed review of the E71. I am about to take delivery of the E71 and I am moving from an E61i. My only concern is whether the E71 now allows you to write email via larger text. We use Nokia Intellisync which allows larger text for reading mail but not when composiong mail?

Cheers

Steven

Thanks for a great review, I must admit that I've been a GSM techy freak since 1992 and probably own the first so called handset ever to be sold in the UK (Nokia NHE-2XN)....
Anyway we've come along way now and I'm looking for the next phone to replace the e61. I cant understand why I cant have a phone where I cant just press a button and record the conversation? i.e. Be able to make a note of somebody's name and address without having to get out a pencil and paper. Surely this must be a no brainer to ad into the spec? Or am I a no brainer that just hasnt worked out how to do it yet.

I love your style of reviewing Nokia E71, perfect clear and crips photos of the phone.
Thanks

I'm a fisherman!
I like trolling at low speeds 1.9 mph and I have used my Nokia N95 GPS capabilities.
At low speeds precision is crucial, Nokia e71 is guessing speeds instead of showing.
Lukely, I'm experienced...

Am I the only one working in a camera restricted business???

When the Hell will cell phones manufacturer understand that people can work in areas where camera phones are Strictly forbidden? Most of the time, when I go to a customer site (means a couple times a week), I need to leave my phone at the security check. Conclusion: no access to the data stored in the phone and no communication possible with the rest of the world. In project launch phase when I stay one week onsite, full time, this is really convenient!

I know, a Blackberry exists without camera. Great!! My company is running Windows Exchange!

I need to replace my phone (which could be awarded "the worst cell phone in the world": Samsung i620) and i am really wondering which one to pick... they all have cameras built in. The E71 is the top on the list so far. HTC would be a alternative but, not sure of the Diamond "on the screen keypad" and the Touch Pro with the full keyboard is kind of thick...

when a E71 with Office 2007 compatibility, some fun in the icons and WITHOUT camera?????

Can the E71 be able to display pdf files? I see no where mentioned in the product description that it has that feature.

Im into my second week of using the device and as a software developer of mobile apps I was very impressed with the flexibility of this device. Your review was to the point and accurate.

Well done!

I can safely call this the BEST review available on the E71..so much so, that I used it to decide my purchase, and now that I have it, I am using it as the user manual (original remains untouched!).

Thank you so much!

Ive had the E71 for about a week now, and I have to say it is very very good. It's not perfect, but what phone is, there's always a trade off between phone size and usability for the heavy email user.

One of the most important things for the business user is the battery power. Even with heavy usage this sucker will last 2-3 days!

As for the crap camera....who cares??

i ve had the e 71 for 4 weeks now - read all the rave reviews - and bought the phone-
summary - its complete tat -it falls over more times than a drunk limbo dancer- be afraid - be very afraid

using the phone for about a month now and everything is great. Some minor details could be improved but globally it's the perfect phone for me. If only there was a model without camera, it would be just perfect.

Useful review. I am a E61 to E71 switched user, and I learned many features from your review.
Thanks!

i have had three of these phones all within a month, all with the same problem, after a day or two of using it the phone would freeze up every single time i try to go into menu. i have to take battery out and turn back on before i use it. I HAVE HAD 3 ALL WITH SAME PROBLEM

I like the E71 but why have'nt Nokia programmed Notes to sync with Outlook such as on the E61?'

hi

Thanks for the post.

A buddy just got one of these, your review sold me.

Just need to do the math and get a good data plan.

Best,

J

I'm seeing an annoying backlight bleed, between the LCD and top left key. Can you guys please post some high resolution, non-angled closeup pics, in the dark with backlight on.

I'd like to see that top left bleed pattern, between the screen and top keys. Checked with a few people, my E71's backlight bleed pattern is defintely not even.

Will swap it if others look alright.

i just recently got this phone. it is very nice. multi-tasking is a breeze.

the people that are complaining about the camera features of this phone should really think twice before making another comment about the camera.

remind you, that this phone is designed as a business phone. therefore, the camera is not and should not be the focus of this phone and it shows. it's pretty standard. it's not good nor is it really bad.

people who get this phone for the "looks" and "camera" functions should really be thinking about their choice. this isn't a media phone and it was never built as that.

it's a business phone.

otherwise, get another phone.
