Nokia E71 - the Q & A

54 replies · 12,522 views · Started 17 June 2008

Thanks for answering! I'm waiting for the multimedia part of the review.

Also, isn't it funny that an Eseries have a better focusing routine then a Nseries?

How is the earpiece speaker volume on incoming calls? This is a dealbreaker with me...as I have some hearing issues. Nokia has a reputation of having super-quiet earpieces...is this one LOUD?

is it as fast as E51 or better?? i've used both e61 and e61i and most disappointed by the slowness after having it for few months and more and more data on the phone. like having 1200 contacts and 1000 of sms and hundreds of emails, opening contact or sms takes 3 seconds or more and it is frustrating. i changed to e51 because of that, but i really miss the keyboard input. in e61i, try opening a contact with 27details, it will take its time to view, but in e51 it takes less than 1 sec.

In gsmarena it stated Talk time Up to 10 h 30 min
And you've stated that the 1500mAh will power the E71 for an eternity..

Are you sure? this would be very great if its true... and this would be the longest battery life ever on a phone I presume.

Specifically do VPM & Coreplayer work ok on this phone? They are excellent on the E61i so I'm hoping it's the same

Contrary to what has been said here I believe increased screen resolution in Nokia's devices IS a problem - i.e. they've stuck to the 240x320 for too long. It's not that I don't get Steve's point about the screen size being too small to warrant it but for emails and email centric / web centric devices the increased resolution WOULD be a HUGE plus.

What is such a let down with these new 'email' devices from Nokia is not only the lack of an increased pixel depth but also the email client itself...which is slow and doesn't display HTML emails unless you click 'attachment' and view the email in the browser. It's a clunky and archaic system and frustrating the Nokia's software developers seem to think it's not worth changing!

Again - frustrating moves forward from Nokia, it seems like they're always saving the 'best for last' !

Even if it is USB 1.1 and 11Mbit/s then use of the phone as a modem is not compromised because 11Mbit/s is much faster than the HSDPA anyway. I can't see many situations where you would use it as a WiFi modem because everything is WiFi enabled these days anyway.

Again people miss the point. If you want a decent email client then just go and get one. You are not restricted to the built in one, you can install a 3rd party one or even develop your own. Profimail suits my purposes and does all you mention above. There are others. Symbian encourages 3rd party apps by providing basic functionality only. This stimulates a developer community which in turn benefits us all by offering a wider choice. It works and it suits me, my email client is excellent and precisely what Symiban/Nokia intended.

Symbian. OPEN to New Ideas.

Going back to the screen. even if there is disagreement in VGA or QVGA, at least the resolution should have been 416x352 like the N70 or N80. It make web browsing & picture viewing so much better. Thats why I hang onto my N80 for so long. Whats up with Nokia producing 320x240 all the time.....

i hope this will anwer some questions...

Hi Steve and Rafe! I know I've asked this question before, but please please tell us your personal opinion of going down from E61i's large 2.8'' screen to E71 screen. I know its a matter of personal taste, but I would like to know what you guys think about it.
Is it as comfortable to browse websites in this 2.36'' size screen as it was in E61i?
And is E71 keypad as comfortable to use as E61i?

I love the E61i and was waiting for an upgrade, but the screen size of E71 is putting me off & even in gsmarena a lot of E61i users have written the same thing abt being let down by the screen size. Your opinions will be highly appreciated.

Hi,

The FP1 that the E71 (and the E66) is running seems to be different to that currently running on my N95 8gb (the little missed Call / message / voice mail icons at the bottom of the screen for instance). Also the Icons look clearner (and it doesn't have those STUPID "Share Online" icons that came with "Share Online 3" - by the way Nokia, when the hell are you going to fix that, and allow us to turn them off... the are really beginning to get on my nerves and I ain't reformatting my phone!)

So, i guess my question is, will we see the nice software tweaks that are on the E71/66 coming to other FP1 phones?

Thanks,
Tony.

Personally I have no problem with the smaller screen - its well worth it to get a smaller device. The size makes an enormous difference to its pocketability in my opinion.

Even if it did get to me it would be out weighed by the GPS, improved camera and multimedia functionality. Browsing websites may annoy you, but its not as if any less information is displayed on screen - so I cant say it annoys me.

For me the keyboard is better because its easier to use one handed. I also find it much less spongy.

Yes the E66 and E71 run a tweaked version of S60 3.1. However this does not mean it will be available on other phones sadly (though its not impossible).

Do the newer E series have more fonts built in, or support installing additional fonts to display more languages? Nokia/Symbian was one of the first Unicode supporters, but now all other brands have full Unicode support with fonts, Nokia isn't very popular in the enterprise in non-English speaking countries.

hi there!

great review and good read, thanks. my question would be how is the e71 compared to the iphone 3g and the blackberry bold in office questions? I'd like to read pdfs on my future mobile phone, is the e71 suited for that? generally compared to the bb how is the e71 in the race?
thanks for the answers

Do we still have to go into the calendar, and set an appointment so we can set the alarm to work everyday, or can we select to have the alarm go everyday, or weekday? Great review. Thanks!

my old e61 had 2 browsers, Web and Services. The e71 is supposed to be the improved version, what happened to the Services browser? The only time the little globe appears is when i access the Music Store function. Am i missing something?

Hello and thanks so much for your help.
I am awfully close to buying an E71 and would appreciate thoughts on this one sticking point:
How smoothly would I be able to transfer info (contacts/calendar) from a PowerBook? I've never done so before on a Nokia product....will there be formatting problems, other difficulties that you know of?
Thanks again and enjoy the weekend.

Does E71 work with the apps for E61/E61i? Since the screen orientation is the same i.e. landscape...

Can somebody guide me whether the E7 is blackberry compatible and if yes how do i go about it ? Please help because i feel that is blackberry connect does not work with E71 then it is a no good handset.

Love my e71, but gutted can't get blackberry connect onto it, so have been making do with POP email that will only sync every 30mins.
My main gripe is that I save sms & mms in folders, but can't save email... any ideas? Even tried the beta version of "nokia email".

recently got the E71 but when trying to access the wlan wizard it does not open, systems error appears. Pls point me in the right direction, thanks

hi everyone,
i have a question about the web browser of nokia e71. Is its web browser capable for all those websites to which we can open on the computer system.
thanks.

Hi I purchased the E71. However after reading the manual I can't seem to find anywhere on how to change the incoming call ring.

What I mean by that is. If I have a call coming in - I have a total of four rings before I can answer it - is there anyway I can lengthen this?
