Nokia E71 - the Q & A

54 replies · 12,522 views · Started 17 June 2008

My review of the Nokia E71, after a week with a production device, still left a few questions in the air, apparently. Rounding up everybody's comments so far, I've attempted (below) to try and answer all the questions about the E71, with Rafe (who also has a production device) pitching in to help.

Read on in the full article.

On the audio front, is there any hiss issue? I get too much hiss with my E90 on low volumes.

What is the audio quality be comparable to - which device?

Doing a great job as usual! Many thanks

My main doubt is the browser... I have never tried any S60 3rd edition devices, so I don't know. I know it is quite capable, but the screen size seems to harm its usefulness(?).

How good is the browser on the E71? Does anyone know any links to reviews of the browser with this screen resolution?

FYI, I am not much of a youtube fan, but I do use a lot of other web 2.0 sites and other web services.

Thanks in advance for any help.

with it being USB 1.1,
is that going to limit the speeds using it as a tethered HSDPA modem?

after using n95 I really want a qwerty.. but man, all the sample pics taken with this thing, not too impressive. I thought "atleast it records vga video", and now you tell me the specs are wrong 😞

Could you do a camera quality comparison with some old phone like s-e w800/k750, I bet those 2 mpix will still kick e71's arse.

Completely disagree. Business users needs more reliability and not less and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 is too new. Business devices will appears with FP2 in time.

This is actually a very good point, many businesses DO tend to go for older versions of OSes and software because they're usually very mature and bug-free.

Bugs are far more damaging than a lack of features, because a bug in a business device can cost the company serious amounts of money.

Almost all of Nokia's current smartphones use this QVGA resolution, so you could look at the browser reviews of any recent Nokia smartphone from 2008 or 2007.

E-series being business centric.... Have they any plans to bring in a camera-free version, like the camera-free E51(not yet available in most places, at least in India, which is a booming IT market that has many organizations restricting the use of camera in their premises) to tackle SE's Lizy??? (Since u guys spoke to the PM, have any one shot such question to him/her?)

A problem I face with the E61 is that the phone sometimes doesnt scan networks real-time, i.e. says no networks found, even when I'm standing next to the router(Even if I enable wireless scan for every 1 min), but works with WLAN wizard that is not made for the fone... Has this issue been addressed in this phone??

If this phone is not FP2, then I dont understand what they mean by this at the nokia site..

- S60 3.1 Edition, Eseries
- Symbian Os 9.2

I'm disappointed with nokia for not having included USB 2.0 and an accelerometer in the E71... Very bad decision I would say...

Thanks,
Ajit

Yes, I have a question, what is your take on Nokia's decision on having the Intellisync client built into the handset? Smart move or wishful thinking?

VGA makes a makes a massive difference to me. Don't knock something until you try it.

Ok rather specific question I know. I often drag emails on to tasks or calendars to create new items in Outlook. When this syncs with my E90/E65/E61 the details text of the new item is reformatted into a rather strange view. The text is there but without alot of spaces, breaks etc. It still occurs when I use an alternative Calendar app such as Papyrus. It happens when using MfE (2.5 i think) and BlackBerry Connect 4.0.

Coupled with the lack of category support, this has meant my company primarily uses BlackBerry and Windows devices, where this doesn't occur. I appreciate that it may appear relatively minor but unfortunately it has been deemed to be a significant flaw for us. (Read : It has annoyed enough senior managers to cause a fuss)

I have asked Nokia directly, no joy.

Anyone know if this occurs with the E71 ? Of is it a case of same FP same problem ?

If I switch to E71 from N95 8GB, what would disappoint me most? (i'm not bothered about the camera)

was there any mention of the processor speed somwhere? i surely missed that.
gsmarena aside from mentioning vga @22fps, also mentioned usb 2. is this wrong too?
many thanks.

Hi Steve! Thanks for the great review.
As you have used both E61 and E71, could you give your opinion about the difference in screen size? How does it feel going from 2.8 inches to only 2.36 inches? Is it a big difference when browsing websites?

And what does E71 keyboard feel like as compared to the E61i? As in, is it comfortable? Or do you prefer E61 keyboard?

Thanks for ur quick response, Steve...

In my question earlier I actually meant, what do they mean by "Symbian Os 9.2" at the nokia site?

Thanks,
Ajit

I know this is business oriented. But I like the occasional common Java games. How is the compatibility considering the flipped resolution? Thanx

Hi. I wanted to know if you could do a side by side comparison with the E61i ?

I currently own one and am not sure if it's worth it to switch yet, nothing really bothers me on the e61i, and I read the screen is bigger by 1/2 inch. I think i'll keep mine, but only the thickness could make me change my mind.

Its what I mean about screen resolution... I rather prefer an E61ii, with 2,8" and VGA resolution that this 2,36" (its smaller than an N82:frown😊 and with QVGA resolution. On net browsing, N80 screen resolution its far better then N82. Now, if they want to do an 2,8" screen VGA, then it could be a great browser device.

Waiting for E71 for long! But my expectation was much higher!
I am not very tech-savvy guy, but prefer to use my cellphone more than my laptop. With my cellphone I organise my tasks and schedule, take and keep a lot of notes, store data, read and send mails, do bloging, browse web, and occationally listen music or take snaps. Now, should I go for E71, or buy E51 and Quick Office 5 for now, at much less price, and wait for the perfect phone?

If I ignore qwerty and screen-size, how far higher priced E71 is better than E51 for average smartphone user?

I think you will find that it still is USB2.0 even if the speed is only 11mbit/s. It will just be USB 2.0 "Full Speed" instead of "Hi-Speed". Nokia phones have supported USB2.0 for quite a while, but I think it was the N78 that was the first Hi-Speed phone.

The person in this article that mentioned he's moving emails into Calendars & Journals ... I'm not even sure outlook even supports that, what version was that used?! Also was it the attachements from the emails that was moved into the calendar?!

BlackBerry Connect. Most likely a final agreement in terms of new licensing was not met. Such a competitive device - now with 3 various 3G HSDPA bands for different regions to compete against the BB Bold; is most likely the decision of delayed official answer on this. Maybe a new BBConnect client is in use.

Q: I have a specific question - not regarding MS Exchange ActiveSync but its successor: Mobile Data Systems Center Manager (think of RIM's BES fully decked out, just from Microsoft with MobileVPN & ActiveDirectory used). Is this supported in the future?
thanks.

Well, there's the extremely large 1500mah battery? That was one of the things that made the E61 very popular, the battery lasted ages.

One of the inexplicable faults which makes Nokia's contacts application look like a student's project is the absence of sorting/searching contacts by the company name. Has that finally been fixed???
