Apparently the first over the air firmware update for Nokia N78 (is this the first one on a S60 device ever?), v11.043, is now available. This new release 'brings more Bluetooth stability, has improved the Music Player refresh time, and includes optimized camera performance and Navi-scroll sensitivity. The update is approximately 2MB and is also available to be downloaded over Wi-Fi. Note that this may not be available for all operators or regions. (via kflyer)
Read on in the full article.
On a slightly related note, the new firmware for Nokia's N800 and N810 internet tablets has just been released.
This update, known as "Diablo", allows the tablets to receive firmware and application updates OTA straight onto the tablet without having to do any backups and without connecting to a computer.
You have to do the Diablo update the old-fashioned way, but tablet updates after that will be OTA, and not just for firmware but also for any installed applications.
This is good news. I wonder when we'll be really able to update the operating system between feature packs or to a compatible version of the underlying Symbian (like 9.3 to 9.5)... Businesses coming from PC side of things will hopefully see this as a natural thing. (I mean mostly Apple and Google, I dare not ask what can be done with mobile Windows versions.)
I wonder if the 6220 classic will have that, since it doesnt have wifi.
Edit: just read the full article, where it says wifi is an option.
Updated my 6120 classic over the air a couple of weeks ago.
The interesting thing is, my 5300 (which isn't even a smartphone!) has an option for OTA updates, but it doesn't do anything when you select it.
Does Nokia have some (delayed?) plans for making OTA updates standard? That might save them a lot of money in repair fees on phones under guarantee, as most repair centre activity seems to consist of simple firmware updates.
Unregistered, re: Windows Mobile updates.
Operators have released large WM update ROMs in the past, e.g. from WM5 to WM6, but a large chunk of WM device users take advantage of the large ROM hacking community to provide them with the latest and greatest versions, customised with the apps they need without having to manually install them and without the apps that they don't need.
I even have a phone that came with WM 2003SE and is now running the latest WM 6.1 - quite a few steps up.
Obligatory Symbian related addition: Blah blah, omg security risk, blah blah
😉
Edit: Oh, and WM6 apparently has OTA ROM update support as well, but all operators I know of seem to have removed it and I've never seen anything available on it for an unbranded ROM either.
It would be nice if Nokia did feel pressured to release some large OS updates to older devices, but I was very pleasantly surprised that they put the demand paging in to the N95 after release - after hearing about it before it was confirmed for N95, I really didn't think it would be backported. Well done, Nokia!
"(is this the first one on a S60 device ever?)"
I don't think so. The N80 has a similar small firmware update OTA around 2006, early 2007. On the other hand the "full" updates (~70MB) have always been delivered through PC.
Just updated my phone, here are some things I've noticed so far:
Looks like they turned transitions off by default.
The default white balance on the camera seems a bit better.
Music player is much more responsive when changing tracks but I have a feeling that's from the transitions being off. I'll have to see if they music player still random crashes over the next few days.
@Nseries78,
Can you please check that if you press the button on a BT headset with the N78 now, that Voice Command sound comes out of the BT headset and not the phone. My N78-3 the BT headset button launches Voice Command but sound output/input is through the phone speakers not the BT headset.
Anything else you noticed? Maybe N78-3 came with newer software...my Music Player has never crashed and white balance has been good.
Do you remember what your old software version was?
Mine currently has 10.136 with a date of May 8th, 2008.
Unfortunately my BT headset is at home charging so I can't comment on the bluetooth stability.
My music player did crash twice, both times I had to pull the battery out, it locked everything up. I can't remember my old FW version number, but I bought it unlocked so chances are it was the newest available.
@Nseries78
Are the transitions still available in the theme settings or where ever? Have nokia removed them completely? 😞
Yes they are still available
Did anyone notice if the screen seems a bit dimmer on the v11 fw?
Wish Nokia gave VOIP back to us in this update 😞
I am updating through wi-fi...
Give me some minutes to comment
I did update a few days ago. Now I restart the phone and except for the Nokia logo... dead! Maybe it is related.
Mine got dead too, but i didn't update my phone.. it`s making me really sad 😞
