Dear All,
This is my first post here, I'm soon to be a convert from Windows Mobile to either a Nokia N95 8Gb or an N96.
Can someone please advise me which phone I should go for out of these two. I did have my heart set on an N96 but i've just compared the 2 phones on Nokia's website and the N95 8Gb looked to be better... Battery life, FP3.1 and a few other things. I'm not in a DVB-H area and I don't take happy slapping videos so the extra multimedia bits of the n96 aren't much use to me. Presently all my music is in WMA format so I guess that wouldn't be compatible on the N95 8GB. The other thing is that I can upgrade now and I'm getting very fed up with my current winmo phone so I'm thinking that a 12mth upgrade on the 8gb would be best, that way the N96 should have settled down in price and everything else!
TIA
Al.
If your not bothered by DVB, or taking video then its the 8GB hands down tbh.
You'll be paying hellva lot less as well. Get the 8GB and wait, I think (hope) much better phones are coming out than the N96.
Cheers dude, I thought that was the way forward. One more quick question though... Does the N95 8Gb support IMAP Idle? - This is my biggest WinMo bugbear!
Cant say, Im not a big mobile email user. I dont own a N95 either 😉
Do a search, it might turn something up. And if you dont get an answer on this thread, start another one.
Plus the N95 can handle wma files no problem. Wish it could play wmv files natively though!
I proud to own both Win Mo and Symbian S60 3rd phones. I find myself leaning towards the N95 on a weekly basis. Just a more robust/reliable device in my opinion. Win Mo is cool because it can be customised 100% with any app known to man. On the other hand, nothing can come close to the 5megapixel camera and 30FPS video capabilities of the N95!
Regarding the N95: I wish the application selections were better and the overall Certification signing process would just go away. There are reasons for this I know but as an owner it's sort of irritating.
I still do not miss the missed calls, soft resets, phone freezing-overall Windows Mobile weirdness...😎
yes the n95 supports IMAP IDLE.. i use it everyday with my gmail account...
yeah, no probs on the idle...
Definately have the N95 over the N96... and as Bart says... hope theres better to come.
Gents,
Thank you all for you quick and helpful responses. I shall be picking up the N95 8Gb in about 30 mins! Good bye WinMo and your "special" features hello reliable phone!
Cheers
Al
/yeah the N96 is a small upgrade against the N95 8GB.
Lets hope Nokia react to the SE's 8MP beast.
I think Nokia are ina a transition period. This will determine whether they succeed or not. Cirrently they are getting destroyed by the competition in software support and UI. But technically no one has matched them overall.
al66 can you tell me what made you fed up of Win Mobile, was it the bugs, slowdowns, restarts etc...
Can someone explain how IMAP IDLE works? I have gmail set up as an IMAP mailbox in the standard email function - will this automatically work as idle (ie pick up emails automatically)? or do I have to change some settings?
thanks

the way it works is that it keeps your inbox always in sync regardless of where you check your mail from, i.e. desktop, phone, outlook or website.
so once you have the email set up in the messaging application, you connect to the mailbox. then you minimize it to the background by double tapping the menu button. now your emails will come thru in real time, instantly. you dont have to set a retrieval interval like you would a POP account. the only downside is this hits your battery because you have a data connection open constantly.
