I recently payed for the Unlimited internet bolt on so I could use the internet anywhere without wifi on my Nokia N95 8GB for one month
This has a 200MB fair usage policy, and I was just wondering am I likely to use this in a month?
I have got various applications, such as youtube, internet radio, opera mini, google maps and Nokia Maps. All of these use the internet and I am just wondering would casual use of all these applications be likely to go over the 200MB in a month?
I am just asking as I would like to use these applications but am worrying that even though it is 'unlimited' I might still go over the 200MB limit so am not using them as much as I would like.
Thanks
Youtube and internet radio will definitely eat into the bandwidth. You should stay clear from using Mobitube and internet radio unless you collect to the wlan.
Yea I thought so,
another thing - what about Mobile Messengers - such as fring or Windows live?
Much less than video and audio streaming.
If you wanna check how much have you used, just reset it at the beginning of the month and then go to LOG, Packet Data and you will see the amount from last reset.
I mean, I know that all the carriers "unlimited" doesn't mean unlimited, but 200mb?
They're taking the p*ss!
Surely it cant be 200mb per month fair use policy.
I use about 300mb in a week at least, lots of webpages homescreens are 1mb+ in size.
If it is 200mb a week you ought to think about swapping over to T Mob and get web n walk.
Only 200mb FUP?
I also have the unlimited bolt on free, and I have gone over 200mb on many occasions as I often listen to internet radio at work, and I have never been billed for it.
There has been no mention of any maximum limit my contract?

Quoted from o2 website:
"The O2 Web Bolt On can only be used for internet browsing on your phone. A fair use policy applies and if your usage substantially exceeds that of other users, which is normally expected to be below 200MB/month, you will be charged standard rates for additional browsing. We will send you a warning text message advising you to limit your usage before this occurs and a text message to confirm when you are being charged"
I guess it its because i'm on a Pay as you Go tariff, and i'm not paying a massive monthly contract.

I was already on o2 so it was easier just to get the internet bolt on from them.
T mobile web n walk is 2.50 for just 5 days on pay as you go.
I have looked at 3, with 'internet Max' for 5 a month (1GB limit) - however I don't know how good a network '3' are for coverage etc?

One thing I am having problems with is that my appliations are not connecting. I have to select 'o2 prepay WAP' for internet. I can connect to the internet using this connection through internet, opera mini, Maps and google maps.
-However I can't use this connection for either Fring, or Windows live messenger - they only work when conneted by Wlan?
It's unlimited for pay monthly contracts. As long as you don't link your phone to a pc or try and download big video files or something. Suprised pay as you go is different. Have you got someone at o2 to actually confirm that?

I wouldn't be surprised if that would be done on purpose by O2 to prevent you from downloading loads of data. The payasyougo internet is probably designed for "light" internet usage, so all the protocols like VOIP etc may be disabled.

The wap.o2.co.uk APN is limited to basic web browsing over ports 80 & 443. Even SMTP/POP/IMAP email ports are blocked.
The mobile.o2.co.uk APN offers "full" internet access on all ports, but is only available to contract customers.
I was recently forced to upgrade from PAYG to the Simplicity SIM-only contract to gain access to mobile.o2.co.uk.

3 has the best 3G coverage, but when it's not covered it switches to O2, so you get the best of both worlds 😊
[Edit] But the worst customer support (and yes I know the others are bad, but believe me 3 is the worst)
It's true. I have o2's web bolt-on on PAYG and it has a monthly FUP of 200Mb. I use it every now and then for searching google and accessing facebook, and also for when I'm at the pub quiz every week 😉 and only on Google Maps or Nokia Maps when I really need to. I haven't been charged any extra than the 7.50 they ask for it so I must be staying within the limit.
I don't use YouTube or Internet Radio on it though.
It may not sound like a brilliant offer, but take into consideration how much 200Mb would cost with o2... nigh-on 600. Somehow 7.50 doesn't sound so bad in comparison.
[EDIT] I'm sensing a little dj vu... I'm sure I've said this before...

Excuse me if I am wrong, but didn't 3 change (from O2) to use T-Mobile's network for non-3G roaming in 2007?

if I remember right, 3uk is using Orange network
jony7 wrote:if I remember right, 3uk is using Orange network
It was O2 and it could be Orange now, but it's definitely not T-Mobile as I get a GPRS signal and only O2 and Orange work where I live. Either way, I get a better deal than Orange or O2 offered and increasingly I get 3G most of the time (even in rural Devon where I live). I'll make the point about customer service again though, as I've serioiusly considered leaving because of this - they understand nothing except phone calls and texts and yet they sell smartphones. One of them told me push email was impossible (not just on their network, but as a technology 😮 )
So i guess im going to change my simcard from o2 to 3 as they have a better and cheaper internet add on for pay as you go. Would the 3 browsing add on allow me to use other apps eg messenger?
I'm on contract and was just commenting on the coverage. I've had a look and on PAYG you get Internet (1GB fair usage) plus MSN Messenger for 2.50 a week so not such good value.
On contract (with the X-Series Silver add-on) you get Internet (1GB fair usage), push mail, Skype and MSN Messenger for 5 a month. I assume you can't add X-Series to PAYG.
Okay,
Well i'm on pay as you go at the moment with o2, but I pay 7.50 for one months internet access. I have now learnt this excludes Messenger applications.
I am looking at the '3' Pay as you go option. I already have a sim card and when I go to 'my3' i can choose the following options:
Internet Daily 0.50
Internet Weekly 2.50
Internet Monthly 5.00
From the looks of it you get Windows live messenger access too, as when I click the add ons link on the 3 page it shows the internet add on, and has a picture of Windows live messenger too?
I am tempted to go over to 3 Pay as you Go, as the internet add on is cheaper, and I would get 3G on my N95 8GB? With o2 I am only getting GPRS.
I have a '3' Pay as you go simcard to use in an unlocked N95 8GB - does anyone know how to get the mobile internet settings for '3 network' on my phone?
I have a question about this bolt on, or indeed using GPRS in general. I know with GPRS you're charged depending on how much you download (You might be connected to GPRS for days but only download a few kb so only be charged a few pence).
HOWEVER, what about uploading? If, say, I used the share online service on my phone to upload photos to flickr, how would i be charged for that? Would it not cost much or anything at all because i'm sending the photos, not receiving them?
hey mate soz for the late reply but if you upload a pic or something to say facebook from the n95 and keep its normal size just say in this case 1mb or just less , you will be sending 1mb of data over the internet so yes you will be charged 1mb of data allowance
downloading , uploading , they are the same thing when using mobile internet tariffs
i use shozu to upload my pics to facebook flickr and photobucket it works really well and id recomend it to any n95 user
however be carefull when uploading because as ive mentioned its charged the same as downloading ie a 1mb pic will use 1mb of allowance if its uploaded because you are still using packet data to sedn the item iam pretty sure emails with pictures would be the same ie a email with a 1mb attachment will use 1mb of you allowance
hope that makes a bit of sense mate 😊
what i do is use wifi when avalible to upload my pics or surf the net
then use o2s mobile web when iam out and about
sometimes i wont upload my pics on the go unless on holiday or something as you can just do it later at home if you have wifi 😊 and you still dont need to switch the home pc on

So you're charged both ways? That's awful! I've got the O2 web bolt-on on PAYG, so does this mean if i download 150Mb and upload 50Mb I'll have used up my 200Mb limit?
Maybe I should consider moving to contract...
Hi,
Ive just recently taken out an upgrade contract with o2 carphonewarehouse with the unlimited internet browsing (200mb limit)
I want to use my GMAIL account as push email on my N96.
My question is that would I stay within the 200mb limit by using this email on my mobile phone or am i likely to go over the limit?
