Negotiating with Orange now contracts up

19 replies · 5,401 views · Started 02 October 2008

Just upgraded my N95-1 firmware to v30.x (was previously on v20.x) and also installed a superb new theme - my 17 month old N95 is now like a new phone once again !! Got rid of all the old junk apps that Ive been playing with over the last 12 months and my phones really zipping along just lovely at the moment.

Think I'll just stick with it even though the contract expires next month. Currently paying Orange 25 for 250 call mins & 100 texts plus an additional 7.50 for 250Mb data p/month so hope to get more mins/txta/data and to reduce my bill.

Anyone negotiated with Orange UK recently to get a good mixed contract - I'd be interested to know what you could get ?

i'm on Orange aswel paying 25 a month + 7.50 also, but with different minutes/texts.

I phoned them yesterday asking for an upgrade to the N96, the guy said it'll be nearly 200 for the phone if i wanted it.

So i said no and he told me to phone back in about a month or so and the phone should have gone down to about 100 then.

If thats really true, it just proves even more that Orange are robbing b*stards.

I doubt the price will change for a long while at Orange.

Only reason i'm with Orange is cause i like their Orange Care insurance policy, 24 hour phone replacement if anything goes wrong.

It's not that they are "robbing b*stards", most companies will charge a premium when phones first come out, demand and all that. I got my N95 for free, 2 weeks after calling and being told 125, so it really is worth waiting just that little bit.
I went for a 18 month contract to get better minutes last year, as each time I upgraded I was always waiting a bit longer for a certain phone. Might happen again this time, but meh maybe I'll be lucky.

When I phoned to downgrade to PAYG they offered my my 30 panther tariff for 10 if I stayed - same min's etc - I didnt push for any more, that was their opening offer. I'd 100% leaving them so it would be a waste of everyone's time

t mobile ...are now charging for upgrade phones, i got one last week an mda compact touch screen free it was an upgrade for my N95, i sent it straight back as i could not get on with it not being a symbian that i was used to, i was told i could choose another upgrade phone, but yesterday i was told i would have to now pay 170 for nokia 6650 which i was going to give to my partner and keep my N95. i also had taken out a solo sim for him on t mobile, now i dont need that ,as it was for the upgrade phone..its not used but they are still charging me for that as well, i have cancelled the card but will still have to pay 20 for the month, t mobile staff have attiude when you phone them they even said i did not exist on record and i had just phone them up 15 minutes before hand not happy with t mobile, its all to do with the credit crunch i was told by them yeah right.....

I got a quote to upgrade to the N96 today from Orange. Are you ready for this....399.99!

I've been with them 10 years as a monthly customer! It would be cheaper for me to cancel my contract with them and register as a new customer and i could get the phone cheaper. Something is wrong there surely?!?!

Nope, no change there from Orange.
They never treat existing customers as good as new customers.

They arn't even offering the N96 as an upgrade on their website (although you can if you phone up), only on new contracts .

Excellent !! What did you do for data ? Assuming you use it did you have to pay extra or was it included in above ?

i got offered

700 mins
free landline calls
unlimited data
200 texts

30 per month, and 199 for phone

...through orange retention.....i just asked for the PUK code and they asked why i wanted it, i said i was leaving and they offered the above

Nice one m.r.davies

But I'm looking to keep my exisiting N95 - anybody out there got any good deals without taking out a new phone ?

I'm not sure on exact details, but some networks/companies will give you money as credit when you sign a new contract without collecting the new phone.

Alternatively, you could stay without the restraint of a 12(etc) month contract, and upgrade whenever you see a phone you want.

tbird,
i just left Ora and went to O2, i was the same as you, just wanted to keep my N95 instead of getting a free upgrade i didnt really want. O2 did me the simplicity, which is basically the same as pay monthly but you only get a SIM.
It's normally 25 per month, but it was reduced until end of Sep. It's been extended to end of Oct.

I got 600 mins to landlines and any uk network, 1000 texts and free bolt-on. I chose free data. So that's 20 month for all that for life. and it's a 1month rolling contract.
I moved my number too.

cheers

Now thats just what I was hoping for - excellentay 😊 !! Is that advertisied anywhere? EDIT [doh - now that ive looked at 02's site its plastered on their homepage]

Just to recap - you managed to get all this for just 20 per month ?

600 mins
1000 texts
Free Data

Any nasty restrictions on the amount of data ?

Right - it's done.

Best that Orange could offer for 600 mins + 1000 texts + data was going to be 30 per month and that was the reduced price to try and retain me as their customer !! So, I duly requested my PAC and Unlock codes and called O2 where I got . . .

600 x network mins
1000 texts
Unlimited Data, subject to Fair Use Policy (the important bit for me)

All for 20 per month Pay Monthly (Cancellable at anytime with only 30 days notice)

Thanks Gusnor for putting me on to the 02 offer - nice one mate :icon14:

Job done :😊

hya tbird,
glad you found it, i was just about to email you the link to the O2 online shop, the advert is right there. I think the offer ends at the end of the month (although they said the same in Aug and Sept!!).

yes i did get 600 mins, 1000 texts and the mobile web bolt on.

All i had to do was 1. get a pac code and have to listen to Ora try to convince me to stay [yawn]. then make sure my handset was able to take another sim, i.e. not locked.
Then sign up on the O2 website (making sure to change the default bolt-on to mobile web). To port my number over, i had to wait until O2 give me one of their numbers then go to the website and port the number over by entering the pac code. Any problems, PM me.

End result after about a week was all the above for 20 inc vat. and no 18year contracts 😉 happy days.

cheers

bartmanekul wrote:Whats Oranges idea of 'unlimited data'? I have heard 30mb to 200mb, but not over.

I didn't pursue the question when I was talking to their retentions guy as he was admitting that they couldn't compete with the 02 package - he'd even pulled up their web site and we went through it together - he couldn't believe what they were offering for 20.

I know what you mean though - the last time I negotiated my data with Orange they had no 'unlimited' service and I ended up with a then un-published 240mb per month for 7.50 service.

Note that it's NOT pay as you go. Its pay monthly.
This is important because PAYG means you have to top up etc.

The o2 Simplicity package is the pay monthly scheme, so you spend what you like and get a bill just like the 12month deals etc.

The difference is that a) you dont get a handset b) you can leave with 30days notice.

Also re Fair Use Policy, i have heard it's 200mb/month but O2 have an excellent history of not really enforcing this much, if at all.

Gus

Cheers Gus ! Jobs already done - I am now an ex Orange customer and a new 02 client 😊

Now that i'm O2 i also signed up for broadband and saved more money. You can now sign up to their packages even if your exchange is not unbundled via BE etc.
