Nokia Communication Center hits 2.0

Yes, those clever chaps at Nokia are still trying to confuse us by offering more and more overlapping PC-hosted connectivity applications. 😊 Communications Center just hit 2.0, incorporating a lot of feedback from the v1.x release. The software adds to the functionality of four of the standard PC Suite modules, namely Phone Browser, Text Message Editor, Contacts Editor and Multimedia Factory. Here's the download link if you want to give it a whirl.

Read on in the full article.

lets not forget nokia photos etc.

and...let not forget the multiple login disorders...

* nokia account
* ovi account
* share online account - ok this is really flickr
* n-gage account
* sports tracker account
* club nokia
* my nokia
* nokia chat
* nokia email

etc.

I agree with Steve that they should definitely stick to one solution, and imho the ovi suite is supposed to accomplish that. What I don't understand is why they then put so much effort in developing more on different solutions...

But macwhu, you definitely exaggerate the situation. This would be the real list:

Nokia account => ovi sync, files on ovi, nokia chat, my Nokia

Ngage
Share on Ovi
Music Store
SportsTracker
Nokia Email

So 5 of them already work with one account. And I am sure they are working on integrating the others as well, but I don't imagine that to be an easy task. At the end, I really hope they have just one PC and Web interface with just one login for all the services....

hear hear on the personal note to Nokia.
One PC connectivity suit.
One Nokia account login, to handle all. 😃

Best regards,
Darren.

Hey, where is Nokia OS? The OS that fully replaces a Windows license if you use your pc only for webbrowsing, emailing and syncing your phone? Where is the eepc software version?

Just making some suggestions B*)

Great.
I had made a feedback to betalabs that the CommCentre should be the starting frame for all apps within PC Suite. Why do we need that Launcher window, anyway? All the shortcuts can sit nicely in the comm.centre toolbar, and we won't have to limit ourselves with lousy 3 last messages seen. And we won't have to start comm.centre separately... Let's see if something's changed since 1.0 <downloading now...>

Sigh. Still the same Sent MMS sorting bug present (all sent MMS are being stamped with time of view refresh). (please see attached picture) I've been reporting it since 6.85 beta...

On the new "Contact Groups" functionality - it's great that Nokia has finally got to implementing it! A minor UI defect, though - when dragging contacts into groups, the view switches into that group. View should stay the same, IMHO, until _I_ want to switch it. Extra clicking needed now to get back to Contacts view.

While I hear and understand and agree on the comments that its a bit confusing, two things could explain SOME of it:

1) Nokia is, what, a 60,000 people organization - there will inevitable be some overlapping projects - sure, they should perhaps control it a bit better, but at the same time that is also one of Nokia's strenghts - they let a lot of flowers bloom

2) Some of the elements that are currently developed as non-integrated and at times even dublicated elements may eventually be "graduated" to OVI. However, its probably wise to develop them a bit "under the radar" until they are quite mature and its safe(r) to give a place in the spotlight..

Just my 3 cents.

Nokia for all their strengths in communications technology offer a totally mixed and confusing message to users with regard to their PC application lineup. The Ovi converged platform started to look promising but releases like this just add to user confusion. This is one area where Apple deliver a consistent message to users (itunes).

@viipottaja very much disagree. Innovation in large companies while coordinating the message to your customers is not mutually exclusive. It's lack of leadership or possibly just very specific management direction. Apple is only 16,000 people, but still, that's 16,000 very creative people to coordinate. Look at the different result at least when it comes to software on their platform. Elegant, focused, creative, for the masses.

I completely agree with Steve (usually do - you are my Symbian guru Steve). Nokia, please stay focused with your resources and deliver better apps. If you must have different teams competing on similar products, establish a vetting process that selects the best result and then push that product only.

I am baffled by the numerous similar software products you launch. The results so far are watered down also rans in many cases. Music apps - can't even remember how many music syncing related apps I've tried, only to be completely disappointed with each. The last music launch to leave the Betalabs is mostly unusable. I keep trying, but compared with iTunes, and even *gasp* Songbird which has only hit v .7 and is open source, not even worth the hour investment I put into it.

At the end, I really hope they have just one PC and Web interface with just one login for all the services....

That's definitely what they're aiming for, here's what it says in the official Nokia Account help section:

Nokia Account is your key to the growing collection of Nokia services. Soon you no longer need to keep track of multiple user IDs and passwords: your Nokia Account provides you with access to all the Nokia services.

...in other words Nokia's plan is to make other logins gradually vanish and be rolled into one Nokia Account login.

To be fair to Nokia on the login issue, other companies in similar positions have taken a while to integrate logins (Google took a long time with Blogger and YouTube for example). This situation couldn't be avoided, because many of the services were bought after they'd already gained a membership, for example Ovi Share is actually Twango.
