GMail's Java-based client seemed to have been stuck at v1 for decades - it's just had the big 2.0 upgrade. It's still Java and larger (at 500K), but it's faster and, it's claimed, more reliable, especially when working for short periods offline. There's also now support for multiple GMail accounts and sending email in the background. To download version 2.0, go to m.google.com/mail in your phone browser.

Big Heads Up For Google Apps. / GAFYD Users...
This new version of "Gmail" is now an "All Flavours" version.
That is to say, this new product, version 2.0, now ALSO works for Google Apps users.
There is now no standalone separate "Mail for Google" java product, for GAFYD users.
This new "Gmail for Mobile" works for all types of Gmail users now.
Cool. Hope this info is useful!
yuck, what a horrible resolution for the icon in the apps folder and on my standby screen. looks like it was about 10x10 pixels blown up to full size.
Jerkier scrolling and still no certificate for disabling the use data question. Meh
The icon does get blow up on S60 3.2 and above phones. This is because the phone automatically scales Java icons up in size. The new icon is worse than the old one more generally too I think.

Wow, that icon with such low resolution really sucks.
looks like this version of Gmail works with the E90 running the latest firmware 300.34.84
thank god for that! was beginning to rue the day i installed it!
thanks Google
GMail v2.0(6) Sadly does not work on my Samsung G810. :frown:
I get a message about running for the first time, then it stops with the initial progress bar less than half way and red text "This program requires a working data connection. Please check your signal strength and connection settings and then restart the application." This is particularly odd because I haven't even been asked to select a connection to use at this point.
(I've tried both restarting the GMail app and rebooting the phone, to no effect.)
This even worse than GMail v1 on my G810 - which would connect once after installing , but never again. The only remedy was to reinstall the software.
'night, Tony
this is getting confusing, we have the default mail application, beta email client (email.google.com) and now this java version, which should we use?
This is so cool a news..I use profimail but i will have this as my back up!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the update. I was really missing this app ever since it started giving that CanvasException (now it is working well on the E90).
They seem to have removed the predictive text option for the page where one enters the username and password. Not such a big problem, since you are always signed in by default (not optional anymore).
But why did they have to change the delete shortcut key from 7 to #.
7 was kinda....esoteric...but at least people were used to it by now.
It definitely seems to be faster overall. Although I now I don't see an option for prefetching mail bodies - seem like one has to open the mail before the body is fetched.
are you sure the file is at 500kb??? what i get is half o that, more or less...
http://m.google.com/app/v2.0.6/L1/gmail-g.jar
Hmm. Im still able to use the 7 key for delete and the # doesnt seem to do anything.
Also, my file size is only 256kb not 500 as posted.
Looks like the frequency of the automatic refresh of the inbox is 30 minutes... And still no way to attach files to send.
The SIS file is 250k, this then expands on installation to 500K, I think.

When I posted earlier, I didn't mention that I was using an E90. I had assumed that the app would be the same for all phones. After seeing your comment, I installed the new version on my Moto Z8, and it still uses the 7 key for deleting mails. I guess they have mapped different shortcuts for different phones, probably based on whether the phone has a qwerty keyboard or not.
my bad, sorry.

I was hoping they would finally implement saving of email attachments, instead of preview only... It's kind of stupid to have QuickOffice installed on your phone, and only have text previews of a Word/Excel document.
Let's hope they get this done soon...
Guess they don't want to make it too good... who would buy the G1 otherwise? 😊
The small icon looks hopeless and I have already had a few problems with mail arriving and although the unread count is updated, the new mail is not displayed in the inbox. It does make you wonder what they have been doing for the last year - at least it loads in under 20 seconds unlike the previous version.
Personally, I'll be retiring my N95 and moving to a Blackberry Storm as soon as they are available.
They really should also bring back the 7,8,9 shortcuts for qwerty devices because on the E90 it is very hard now to work at the front screen where i dont have a qwerty keyboard.. (delete is still simple but why not use the "real" delete key for that? but archive is now very hard to do and thats the key that i most used)
also i just cant get this version to become full screen, any idea how to do that? I guess i have to install the jad file (instead of jar) just like with the 1.5 version?
This sounds good😊

I have downloaded Gmail for Mobile - symbian - Ver. 2.0.6.1269 gorganic
Installed it on my Nokia E71 and it works fine. But some basic features doesn't exist:
1) Compose email - there is no option to add attachment when composing new email. Why ?
2) Inbox - there is no option to SAVE attacment when open incoming mail in Inbox. When I click on it it is opening in default viewer, which cannot recognize half of file formats that Symbian recognizes. Why they miss to put SAVE option for arhiving it on memory card or so... ?
3) Very dificult to switch from Inbox to Sent Items ... they should make TABS instead going into Menu and choosing Sent Items or any other folder. Why so complicated?
4) Settings - You can add your Gmail account but you cannot edit it. So if you want to change password you have to remove exsisting account and add it againg with new password. In futher, it doesn't ask me for Real Name just for email address, why ?
Do I have some demo version or what ? Do I need to buy email client or activate it to have "basic" email client features like above ?
At first moment when I so this email client for Gmail account I was excited, but now all I can say - if it stays at this point it is useless.
Hope somene will correct me and explain things....
Thank you for your time.
