Just making sure that you catch up with Ricky Cadden as he presents his real world thoughts on Nokia's Share Online, pointing out that it's far too laborious when you've got more than a handful of photos to share with the world. Quite agree. Also agree with him that the PC/web-side of things is now really slick.
Read on in the full article.
That's why I use Shozu when uploading to Flickr. 😊
Ricky Cadden is a right moaning idiot. His articles are often nothing more than pointless uneducated rants. AAS, please don't lower yourself into his gutter by giving credit to this morons articles.
IMO the point of share online is for uploading the occasional quick snap whilst on the move. For uploading larger amounts then it makes sense to use a netbook or laptop.
If Nokia listened to muppets like ricky then they would never bother releasing added-value software like share online.
That's rather a harsh view - everyone is entitled to their opinion. We periodically try and link to a full range of such opinions. Ricky may be an edge case, but it still a valid user case (you might argue that Nokia doesn't need to cater for such users - it tends to go for mass market need).
While I do think people will largely use Share Online for sending up one or two photos that's more to do with bandwidth restrictions which will go away. Moreover some people never transfer images off their phones. As such there is room for improvement in SO. personally I know I find the only upload one thing at a time especially annoying.
Thankfully most of these issues are fixed in the next release. I've been playing with it on the 5800 and not only is their an outbox (see what you've uploaded) you can also start uploading the next thing before the last one finishes.
Don't know how many of you are using Vox for photo upload, but I am having a minor issue with Share Online (the one which comes with v30 firmware form N95).
I have set everything right, but when I "Activate" the Vox Service, it hangs at "Retrieving Services" progress bar...
Luckily though, even with this hangup, I could later on Post to Web from the Gallery!
So it's a minor inconvenience.
As for Ricky's rant, I don't think he fits the typical usage patterns, for which Share Online was developed. Usually there's weak reception and high roaming charges, there where you take nice summer pictures!... 😊 LifeBlog + Vox works great for me. Of course, "just add a PC"!
I agree with unregistered, he's entitled to his opinions and such, but going as far as saying "Share Online [is] completely and utterly worthless" is just stupid. No offence.
Yeah... er "me too". I didn't read beyond "Share Online sucks..." because I completely disagree with him: I think it's excellent. If his argument is that it's not very good for uploading lots of photos, then good, I hate people who upload all their photos, good or bad. Share Online is perfect for just uploading one or two good photos.
As a bit of an aside, I was interested today to see that Flickr has over 3 million registered N95 users. How many of those use ShareOnline and how many use Shozu or other methods, I don't know.
Maybe I'm getting too used to automatically filtering language. Personally I don't like the upswing in the use of the world FAIL, but that's me! Anyway I still think there's a good point being made.
But the feedback is noted we'll try and give our own opinion more and maybe make a note in links that there may be stylistic differences to external content compared to AAS.
neilhoskins - definitely agree on the don't upload everything. Actually one of the biggest issues for me is telling how good an image is before uploading. Down-sampling an image to QVGA often hides bluriness / poor focus etc. I guess that's an argument in favour of higher resolution screens (which is something I don't feel is necessary much of the time).
Rafe, dude (yeah.. please filter that.. ), where is the 5800 preview already! I am waiting for it eagerly, as I suspect it will easily be the definitive one that everyone should really read. And I am not even trying to kiss your.. err.. ok, I self-filtered that one. 😃
