@Tzer2 - Did you just comment on your own post?
Yeah, I do that if I want to mention unsubstantiated or informal speculation that doesn't really belong in the article proper. Sorry if it's a breach of "netiquette" 😉 but this is site is a news one rather than a blog, so I try not to talk as myself in the news posts and save it for the comments instead.
In any case, I've a feeling that Nokia will piss off a boatload of Nseries fanatics if they end up not supporting the N73 and N93 after all.
Here's my take on this, it's a purely personal one:
First of all, the major blunder Nokia has made is promising the app for those phones way back in August 2007 and (so far) failing to deliver. It's particularly bad with the N73 as it's still on sale, some people may have bought it for N-Gage, so they're owed an apology and possibly something more from Nokia. Perhaps anyone who bought an N73 since August 2007 could get a voucher for some free games, or a discount on a new Nseries? They could prove when they bought it by giving their IMEI, which apparently lets Nokia look up the date of first sale.
The irony is that Nokia are STILL promising it as "coming soon" for N73 and N93 which may not be true at all ( http://www.n-gage.com/ngi/ngage/web/g0/en/get_ngage/devices.html ).
BUT... on balance I don't think they should add compatibility for the N73 and N93.
Those two phones are very old now, with low amounts of RAM and an old version of S60 compared to modern handsets. If they did become part of the platform it could make life much more difficult for developers, which means less complex games and/or longer time to market (N-Gage is slow enough with release dates as it is, anything which makes things worse must be avoided).
And to be honest I don't think most current users of the N73 or N93 would even be aware that N-Gage exists, because of the platform's soft launch. The main way people find out about it is by buying a model with the N-Gage app embedded, but it's too late to do that with the N93 or N73.
The N93 isn't on sale any more, the N73 will probably be discontinued soon, and very few people bother to install apps manually, especially if they're unaware the app exists. I can't see many users coming from those phones.
But Nokia definitely owes anyone who bought an N73 or N93 since Aug 2007 some kind of redress, at the very least a profound apology and explanation why compatibility couldn't happen (assuming it doesn't, they haven't actually said).
