Hmmm.....I hope this new firmware (if it does come out anytime soon) fixes the very few bugs I've found in 4.13...
I wonder whether it'll choke on 64k SIM cards like 4.13? If you're curious to know, I tried a friend's 64k card in my 9210 and I got errors almost immediately after one call. Cranky thing!
Well, I am still running ver 3.62 with a 64 MB MMC with no problems. I believe you mean MMC rather than SIM cards?
Machine is running really good no hicups so far after 3 months of instensive use.
I may skip ver 4.13 and move onto 4.24.
Does anybody have a link to somewhere on a detail step-by-step upgrade exercise. What do I need to do before I send my nokia to the service centre for the sw upgrade? Backing up the nokia is obvious, what else is there to do in preparation. Any assistance is much appreciated.
Fe3+
Not that you guys are interested, but I'm gonna tell y'all anyway that I'm gonna wait 'til Summer, drive over to Cambridgeshire, kip in my car and catch Communicaid in the morning and when I get me phone back, I'm gonna spin around the UK for a couple of days and then go home and go to bed.
Tankerx,
Phew, didn't realise it takes that long to upgrade your phone. From Cwmtwrch, South Wales to Cambridgeshire just to upgrade!! In anycase summer in Wales/England country side is great with the pubs along the way to keep one company. Wish I was there.
S'pore Nokia service centre upgrades within a working day, & if you're lucky within a few hours - just need to push the service folks.
Cheers.

Nope, I wasn't kidding when I said 64k SIM. One of the operators in my country (Maxis) has been giving free upgrades to their 64k cards this whole month. A service tech at the local Nokia distributor confirmed the problems, also mentioning that the 64k cards would cause some Siemens (S35, I think) phones to crash.
As for upgrading your phone, well, backing up should be all. Depending on where you go to, the fellows there might back it up for you too....
What is the difference with a 64K card? More numbers or texts or both? Although an increasing number of phones store the infomation in internal memory so larger SIMs don't seem that useful anymore.
Hi AAY,
Thks for the heads up - thot you were refering to MMCs.
Cheers
I've been using my 9210 for three months now (replacing my old Ericsson r380s). Although it crashes several times a week, let's say once a day, I'm a happy camper! Working with 64 Mb allows me to use it on more occasions then my previous model.
Nokia mailed me about the possible upgrade to 4.13 but assured me that the only way they can do it is when I return my communicator to them for two (2!) weeks...
At this time, with all the roumers about 4.24, the best option for me is to wait for the summer vacation to upgrade to a newer version!

Yup, more phonebook entries and more text messages. Which doesn't make much of a difference if you use a 9210 ![]()
A friend of mine (non-9210 user) claims that the new SIM card is faster, in the sense that opening his Inbox, etc was a lot snappier as when compared to his old 32k card. And, this is probably operator-specific, he has some new STK apps in there too....
And Fe3+, you're welcome
Interesting username you've got there.....referring to Iron (III)?

Good Heavens! I cannot imagine being without a phone as essential as my 9210 for more than a day...two weeks you say? Some people at Nokia should be shot for that!
Here in Malaysia, the 4.13 upgrade takes all of 30 minutes (or 60 minutes, depending on how busy the service center is). The only downside is there are only about three or four service centers in the country which can upgrade Communicators...and from what I gathered from one of the service techs, the upgrade installs all the new applications so your Communicator is ready to go immediately after the upgrade.
We may get our phones a little later than some countries in Europe, but at least the service we get is quite prompt! ![]()
Only one or two?
Count yourself lucky!
In the UK, we have only ONE!

Hehehe.....you get the bad weather and lousy service and we get the sun, monsoons, and semi-decent service ![]()
Amazing that a country with so many Communicators like the UK has but one service center....in Malaysia, since there are three Nokia-authorized distributors (only one of whom has the rights to import/distribute Nokia's 'common' phones like the 6210, 8310...) each has a service center.
One is always soo busy that every time I've gone there, I've had to wait at least an hour for service, another is manned by a clueless guy who didn't even know that he had to charge for out-of-warranty software upgrades, and the third distributor is so quiet that almost no one I know of knows they are distributors....oh well!
In Luxembourg, I walked in and they upgraded to 4.13 while I waited, [about 45 minutes]
Cool!!
In Luxembourg the service is "tip top' as they say
but the population is only 400,000 people
but be careful my nok 6210 upgrade did not have english language as an option nor did my 9110 and the keyboard got sort of funny q in a place etc
i ll be in the grande dutchie on thursday if you fancy a drink and a chat

Hola. Salud.

I'm not gonna get the upgrade, I'm gonna buy the NEW 9210i when it comes out near September'ish!
WWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW
Hmmm....still no 4.24 software available on the Nokia support website (i.e. the MMC contents zip) - has anybody received the 4.24 upgrade to their firmware yet - and did they uprade the MMC contents for you at the time?
When I had my 9210 upgraded to 4.13 here in Australia it only took a couple of hours, but they didn't know anything about the MMC component (doh!). Fortunately I had already downloaded it and had it ready and waiting on the laptop...
I'm starting to wonder whether 4.24 really does exist......
So far, no one besides the original poster on my-communicator seems to have a copy.
This topic has also been picked up on the my-communicator forum. There Marlon posted "I have been to the NSP in Holland where it was claimed to
be done. They told me that they don't have it yet and that the offical
version is 4.13."
The NSP he is talking about is the Nokia Store in Rotterdam, and after a brief phonecall these findings were confirmed to me. As of now I would gladly call this story an official Hoax!
Best regards from Delft, the Netherlands

Just to go back to the original thread-subject the 4.24 firmware is definitly not a hoax. On the Swiss site aikon.ch word about 4.24 was already going around, and I just got response from a Dutch NSP (Dynafix) telling me that a new firmware is announced (4.24) but not yet released. "They are working on it". So let's bear together and wait in patience...

Then it might not entirely be an offical Hoax, but the story spread about the availability in Rotterdam is a definite Hoax!
Waiting with v3.62 and my 64 Mb MMC crashing on me once a day (with extremely intensive use) i can't wait to get any update, and a two week vacation without use of my phone!
Bets regards

Hi everyone;
My first post (be gentle... *hah*).
I just got my Nokia 9210. Not 100% familiar with it yet. I believe it's version 3.62.
What's the best procedure for updating it to the new version? I can't necessarily rely on the local (Thailand) Nokia office to do anything quickly or correctly!
(Any chance of doing it myself?)
Hi all
1st post on this forum (but you can all see that) to upgrade the phone's software you need to right file and beable to stop the pda (epoc system) from starting when the battery is put in, if I know how to do that I can upgrade the phone myself as I have the file needed but can stop the pda part starting. (info taken form nokia service manual)

Well, you'd notice that the phone service manual also makes mention of a 'service battery'. My guess is the different resistor to the battery id pins tell the phone not to start the PDA. I think the service manual also mentions the resistance values somewhere....I even recall a line about how the service battery disables the PDA (or am I imagining things?).
If you do manage to upgrade it yourself, do post the results/procedure on this forum. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would want to do the same! ![]()
That right, but It does say how to make a service battery, so I was hopeing that you could enter something in the pda part which shuts it down or turns it off untill you enter a code to put it back on.

Not too sure about a code (unlikely if the service battery has the same purpose).
If you're willing to butcher a (very expensive) 9210 battery, you could try swapping the resistor in there for a 22k part. Alternatively, if you have a good, stable power supply (like a lab power supply) you could throw together some sort of a bodge that might just work! I usually enjoy messing around with things like these, but the Communicator is just too expensive for me to experiment with ![]()
Maybe if someone could donate a dead 9210 to me? Hmmm..... ![]()
