Should Nokia have something like an AppStore with, now, hundreds of 3D titles easily purchasable / downloadable, I think the figure would be MUCH higher - just like on the iPhone.
Let's not forget one of the biggest selling points of the iPhone is gaming, particularly 3D gaming. Lately, when friends ask me what platform to buy, I tend to tell them "if you want to frequently play games, particularly 3D accelerated ones, iPhone should be the platform you choose". And, yes, I know all the major operating systems and all the games on them like the palm of my hand...
this 3d hw topic on nokias seem to be going no where.
no one really cares....
its just a few of us that is kicking and hammering nokia trying to get them to change the n97. to be honest. nokia being nokia, they wont change a thing at all. nokia being rehash masters should be rehashing n97 form factor, next time around they better get it RIGHT!!! 3d HW in all nseries phones.
they wont admit their product is incomplete without 3d hw. just like the other products they released this year... n96,n85,n79,5800xm.
looking back at the Q and A sessions for N96 and N85, nokia clearly ignored all 3d HW questions. this year with n97, the product manager clearly stated they dont have 3d hw, but he stated they have a processor thats tuned and move powerful than n95 and n96. this statement is not really telling us anything.
so its powerful? in what way? the hd assisted video decoding instructions are more optimized than n95 and n96? or overall processor speed is faster doing generic tasks? I would prefer dual chip solutions to offload the baseband into another chip.
eldars preview says TI OMAP?.....so its it 2431? or 3410? series? in the diagrams from TI the 2431 seems to have touch screen support, so does the 3410. and eldar did mention 243x processors would be used by nokia.
i think the 3xxx omaps would see a decent performance boost.
either way, i think nokia has dug themselves a hole, and they wont be able to get out over the whole year. good bye 3D hw for 2009. wait till apple takes over the gaming platform and apps store.
iphone came out.... a good 2 years ago. iphone 3g basically contains the same guts. so no idea what nokia is doing. if E77 was to beat iphone 3 hands down, then does it have 3D?....why would a enterprise phone have 3d? lol...
all the rumours dont make sense any more.

I still don't understand why Nokia don't realize
1. a LOT of people want 3D acceleration (not just 5%) in the top-end N-series handsets
2. one of the major reasons of the popularity of the iPhone stems from its hardware 3D support and games. Not even Windows Mobile can come close to the iPhone in this respect, let alone other mobile platforms (albeit Nokia did release some cool titles for the Next-Gen N-Gage lately.)
BTW, it's not only native (sisx) apps that are accelerated, but also J2ME titles using 3D. These games (there are quite a few of them) run far faster on my N95 than on my non-accelerated WinMo handsets. That is, one cannot state there are so few games that could profit from 3D HW acceleration that it's simply not worth building on them.
I really want to stick to the Nokia N-series as my next phone because it's able to record calls (unlike the iPhone 3G, all of the BlackBerries or HTC's Windows Mobile devices) and the camera, which is much-much better (at least in the N95/N82) than in any phones I've ever tested (including the iPhone 3G). Too bad we're let down by not having 3D support.
The stupidity of this thread is mind boggling. You ACTUALLY think that Nokia, the absolutely and undisputedly dominating king of the cell phone world does not understand the wow factor of the iPhone? Second, OF COURSE 3d accelaration makes a huge difference in CERTAIN use scenarios and applications. And again, do you HONESTLY think Nokia does not know and understand that. Despited me asking 3 times this thread to discuss WHY Nokia does not put in 3D accelaration more, no one (apologies if I missed comments on that) seems to be willing to discuss that, not even Steve. Everyone just goes on and on about how great or not great 3D acceleration is. That's completely beside the point (see my second point above). The much much much more interesting and important question is: why, despite the obvious benefits in certain cases, Nokia does not use it more? 1) Price. That's obvious. However, no one seem to be able to tell me how much more it does cost 2) Competitive position vis a vis others. Sure, iPhone looks gorgeous and sells quite well. But does that really matter that much for Nokia up until now? Others? Not that many devices out there relying on 3D accelaration if I am not mistaken, and those that are, are fairly marginal. 3) Logistics, supplier relations etc. Its quite conceivable that DOES cause some latency in the production system, even for Nokia that has most muscle.
Those are the kinds of things that should be discussed in this thread. Not repeating ad nauseum the facts that obviously 3D does make a difference and that you would LIKE to see more of it in Nokia phones.
Let the real, meaningful discussion start, please.
Rant over.
