Hi All,
I'm new to Nokia, just got a N85. I'm coming from a Blackberry Pearl.
I have been looking everywhere in the phone for a setting for this and seaching online, but haven't found anything yet. On the Pearl, from the home/standby screen, when I started typing numbers, it would show me contacts that I was spelling. Essentially, I wasn't really keying numbers most of the time, I was looking up contacts, could choose who I wanted, then call or send a message, etc.
So far, on the Nokia, it appears I have to go into contacts, look them up, choose a number, choose to call, then even tell it that it's a voice call & not a video call, which by the way, I'd probably turn that off if I knew how because I don't know anyone that would receive a video call. In any rate, it's a bit of an inconvenience having to physically go into Contacts each time I want to make a call.
Am I missing a shortcut? Is there a way to change it so that when I type on the standby screen it shows me contacts that I'm spelling?
Can someone please help?
Thanks!
Only the E66 and E71 support this type of smart dialling. With the N85 you'll have to add it by means of a third party application. Quikey is one such app, but you do have to pay for it.
There's a free application called T9nav which does the job great. I use it on my N96 and it doesn't seem to slow the phone down. Have a look at: http://www.t9nav.com/ 😊
Thanks for the replies! At least I wasn't missing anything.
I just switched from the Pearl as well, and had the same question. Seems like such a simple thing that Nokia should implement across their products.
I really didn't realize how addicted to that feature I was. I think I really got spoiled with it and now...geez...I mean I know I sound like a dweeb, "oh gosh, I have to actually go into Contacts", but when you text and call one-handed most of the time, the less keystrokes, the better.
In any rate, for those who may have the same question, my best alternative so far, outside of trying other software (which I intend to do once I've had time to investigate them properly), is to use the media key. I organized the applications in the media key to make Contacts the first one that comes up. Then I've added the contacts I call or text the most. I then found that when I highlight the contact, if I press the call key, it calls...if I press the center key, it defaults to a text message. It isn't perfect, but is helping me a lot.
