Hey guys, I am new to this forum. Sorry I am not a technical guy and need some help....:con? I am interested to buy a E90-1 in the US. However, I have many chances to visit Asia and need 3.5G (aka HSDPA hi-speep internet access) services. One of my friend told me as below:
"Nokia E90-1 US version CAN NOT go 3.5G in Asia, because its firmware can not read '2 digit code'. Only Europe/Asia version of E90-1 can go 3.5G in those countries'."
Is this true? In addition, he also mentioned that becuase the lack of '2 digit code' capability, E90-1 US version CAN NOT read Chinese/Japanese website as well.....
Please kindly advise whether or not this is correct... I have chance to buy it in the US but of couse do not want to buy a useless phone if I travel to Asia....
Thanks!
The E90 sold in the USA supports
* GSM quad-band (850/900/1800/1900)
* WCDMA HSDPA 2100
according to this page:
http://www.nokiausa.com/find-products/phones/nokia-e90-communicator/specifications
As the 2100MHz band is not used for WCDMA/HSDPA in the USA, but is used most everywhere else, it should handle 3.5G in Asia just fine, on any 2100 MHz WCDMA network with HSDPA support.
'2 digit code' doesn't mean anything, but I suspect it is a reference to 2-byte character sets, which has nothing to do with the cellular frequencies a device supports or not. In that respect the E90 sold in the USA does support Unicode (as S60/Symbian is inherently a Unicode character set based operating system), but it does not come with any font files with Asian languages/characters. In other words, it cannot display Chinese/Japanese websites because of that (and there is no Chinese/Japanese character/text input support, either).
But you can try products like Psiloc Crystal Chinese or Psiloc Crystal Japanese:

You can also find and replace the default/system font files with versions that have also the Asian language characters you wish it to have:

Changing the fonts won't give you, e.g., the Chinese front-end processor (input method editor), though.
Anyway, if you're a resident of Asia, and want it to come with built-in language support for some Asian region, then buy the E90 in that country/region.
Hi there,
So many thanks for your explanation. Well, buy a E90-1 in Asia is very difficult, at least difficult to buy in the place I used to visit.... I am in the US now and that's why I wanna buy it in the US.
I don't mind to have Chinese/Japanese input or not. But capable to read the website and HSDPA are really my concerns. Through your note below, looks like both my concerns won't be a problem, right?
