A major firmware update for the Nokia E71, version 200.21.188, is now available. The new firmware adds the Internet Radio and My Nokia application, adds two new themes, adds a number of usability improvements and contains a large number of stability and functionality updates including improved WLAN support, more power efficient 3G and improved camera performance.

Why cant we just have an App and Home directory like modern OS?

I really dont want to spend 3 days reinstalling and configuring dozens of Applications!

The more recent versions of S60 do preserve user data during firmware updates, but the E71 runs a slightly older version (S60v3 FP1) because it's more stable, and businesses seem to prefer stability over features.

Thats no excuse, the N82 has UDP and that is a S60v3 FP1 device

Are you sure? I thought the e71 was on S60v3 FP2, i.e. Symbian 9.3. In fact, I thought it is the 1st eseries device to be on FP2.

Hmm i just updated mine to 110.07.127 2 weeks back and spent 3 hours reinstaling my apps and mail solution. A serious drag if u ask me... since i updated to it my battery life is BAD it will drain my batery 3 notches a day without me not even touching the phone and nothing running in the back !!!!
Also the GPS will not lock in when in a moving car i need to stand still in order to get signal and thn it will work fine ... for now these 2 things seriously bother me in everydays usage... if someone noticed this things on his device pls respond. THX S.

I'm going to wait. It'll take me ages to reinstall everything and set up as it is now. So far I've had few problems with my original firmware so if it's not broken don't fix it.

What the vast majority of people don't realise is;

It is the application creators job to tell the phone to back-up it's files

It's a big pain to reinstall everything and set the phone up how you like it. Although this firmware looks like progress, I think I'll wait for some early adopters to test the water before I commit myself. Nokia need to make the process of upgrading firmware less painful for owners of older phnoes.

Warning...

Two bugs with the new firmware, one minor but frustrating, the other quite incredible, at least for me...

1) Since they have have changed the functionality of the key-lock slightly, it now means that if you use a PIN code to lock your phone, unlocking the phone to use it is now a pain, as intead of "Left soft key" then a message "Please enter Unlock Code" to open the phone, you now HAVE to press "left soft key" and then "left function key" (as if no PIN code was set, and you were just doing a normal unlock), simply just to get it to then bring up the "enter PIN code" entry box. Total P.I.T.A.

2) MUCH more significant... anyone else please test this for me... since this Firmware update, now, irrespective of WHATEVER theme I use, my contacts list screen is a right mess, as it now displays with an entirely white background, no matter what the theme chosen. Previously, the contacts list background colour was whatever the theme told it to be. Now, since the new firmware, the Contacts list backgorund screen is always white, and as a result, a NIGHTMARE to see.

Does anyone else get Bug number 2, which to me, is a complete show stopper... I have tried doing a system format ( *#7370# ) but to no avail...

And what's my options now - only a service centre for roll-back...?

Just tried updating my E71 using the new downloaded update manager and the programme crashed half way through, now I am left with a blank screen and need to take it to a service centre or Send it away. Not sure if this is a problem with the update or the update manager. But not happy.

The background of my contacts list has always been white. Never really bothered me to be honest. I agree that Nokia should make these firmware upgrades easier. I'm not looking forward to it.

No Berty, it hasn't...

At least, let me be clear, if you used a theme that did not utilise a white background, the background was not white.

For most people, that is 90% of all themes.

Even the inbuilt ones such as Grey Steel etc, where the dotted metal grey look is prevalent throughout, also utilised this style as the backdrop for the contacts.

But... not any more it doesn't under this firmware.

And I think your missing a trick here... try any theme that uses white text, and see what use your contact list is with white lettering, on white text, and THEN report back and tell me that an INVISIBLE contact list, still doesn't erm, bother or affect you.

Not being able to even SEE my contact list, under certain conditions, certainly counts as a deal breaker major bug to me - I would assume most others would too...

*lol*

Just done another full Firmware update, and alas, I am STILL seeing this.

A bug in this new firmware, seems to indeed now be that the contact list is WHITE, no matter what theme you use, and in full contravention of standard Symbian conventions.

Great.

dude I think you are crazy!!!
first of all, no matter what theme you use, the text will stay black!!
so it's quite opposite to what you said as if i use a black grounded theme i would have a complete black contact! so I think white is a good idea. and please calm yourself down geez!!!

Wow how do I respond to accusations of craziness, from someone clearly so touched as you yourself *lol*

Rest assured, I'm hardly slashing my wrists, or banging heads against walls (yet). But YOU seem to claim so.

Hooray for you, who thinks WHITE FOR EVERYTHING is a good idea - irrespective of the work put into creating some wonderful themes by some incredibly talented people.

I can't help but wonder WHY, if it is so great, that before now, every well recommended theme did not have an entirely WHITE background for the contact list... how incredibly dumb of all those theme designers not to make every single theme ever written have a plain white screen for the Contacts list section. How very very dumb of them all...

My point hitting home yet...?

Great that you like this aspect of things.

But the whole WORLD is not compelled to love it... and a CHOICE has historically been the norm, before now, where a person could DECIDE for themselves what they LIKE for the contacts list, by way of choosing a theme that suits them.

After all, as it's one of the most LOOKED AT areas of the phone OS, it has clear significance.

So as I am not bashing nokia, just for the sake of bashing nokia, but rather because they HAVE done something WRONG, how about you therefore, stop defending Nokia, just for the sake of defedning nokia, unless or until there is valid grounds for that defence.

Let me leave you with this thought...

As this is no longer a CHOICE, but a fact that now every single theme will have no effect on the contacts list screen on the E71 with this new firmware... if you think it is so cool, can you just imagine for one second what would happen if this was rolled out to EVERY single Nokia phone, so that in time every single nokia phone had this Contact List colour issue...?

I think if that day ever came about, you'd well and truly NOT be sticking your head above the parapets and telling the world how wonderful this 'bug' was.

So, please don't do it now either, just for the sake of defending nokia for the fun of it, as I don't knock them for the fun of it, but because they have messed up, and made something worse, that used to be 'better' for us - i.e we had a CHOICE on every single Nokia phone, right up until now, what colour and what style we wanted on the Contacts Screen.

Now I don't - yet, forgive me, but isn't that what a theme is all about?

Like I say, if they did this on EVERY Nokia firmware and phone from now, see how quick people start yelling...

My phone has a white background in contacts. No matter what theme I choose, the background stays the same, white.

The bar that highlights which contact you have selected does change color depending on what theme I use. That includes the stock themes.

I'm still on the firmware that it shipped with.

Had the same problem with mine, but when you run software update again it fixes itself. I'm pretty sure it's because I didn't restart after installing the new software updater.

Anyway, firmware upgrade went well for me. Backup was restored okay and only lost a handful of my programs (but we know that's the program makers fault, right?)

After having update E71 with the new firmware it is no longer possible to suppress any noise of the camera. What a backstep!

@ Delta737...

Incredible... quite incredible, on two counts...

Firstly, you find me a basic theme, which is something I always like - clear simplicity, but one that has psuedo-original S60 ICONS.... you are my friend, quite frankly, a genius - I have been after something like this since day one. Thank you.

BUT... even MORE strange, but beneficial - I am seriously starting to think there is a real issue here, because you are correct again, THIS theme, does indeed somehow allow for a coloured background on the Contacts List - the horrible plain white with Black Text, does NOT affect this theme. It's not perfect, as it looks from the search bar at the bottom as if a bit colour might be missed, but it IS far and away the best solution thus far to this new White Contact List screen issue.

It then opens up a huge new can of worms though, in that it beggars the question, why is it suddenly with the new firmware, 98% of all themes that used to work fine, now show a Solid White background for the contacts list, whilst a tiny few other themes CAN and do still show colour?

Bizarre.

But for me, a BRILLIANT find - so thanks, and thanks again Delta!

@ unregsitered - yes, I can confirm people that this firmware update also introduces another flaw... The camera does indeed now still make sounds when set to silent - two in fact, one for focusing, and then one for the shutter. So bad step back, for the sake of 'privacy issues' as Nokia will claim.

OK. Done my update now, all quite smooth and restored from the memory card with only a few programs needing reinstalling. Taken about 2 hours all in and all seems well.

First of all, I have never seen the contact list in anything other than a white background, in all the standard themes on the device (I don't use custom themes).

I have the following themes on my device:

Grey Steel
Black Business
Black Personal
Dark
Light
Red Business
Red Personal
White Steel

All of these have a white background to the contacts screen (what you get when you do a short press of the contact button on the device). It has always been this way and I can't remember any theme changing the background of the contacts app - which is a good thing since contacts are important to be clearly visible on a business device.

I don't think its something to get overly excited about and type in giant red letters.

@fyrestrtr...

Another two users elsewhere also say they 'already' get the solid white screen on the contacts list, rather than a theme based colouring in keeping with the rest of the theme.

They too also do not say what the actual VERSION or REGION of firmware they are running is either.

Because clearly, you might have already realised for yourself, I can hardly say "it now does 'this'..." unless the previous firmware never did that for me.

So the clue is already in the question - for SURE, previous firmware versions, before I updated, did NOT do this for me.

And my firmware path, just for clarity, was T-Mobile original firmware version, whatever that was, out of the box. I do not remember any white contacts list with this one, but it never stayed on that firmware very long, so cannot say for sure. As I then quickly changed the Product Code, and flashed with the European generic firmware, version 110 or whatever.

That is what I ran it for for a month, and I can confirm absolutely, that it did NOT suffer the white contacts list issue the new firmware does. I repeat that as a FACTUAL statement so there is no room for doubt.

So perhaps YOURS is an old, or region based firmware, for another user to ALSO say his was a white contacts list without updating. Maybe yours is OLD. Who can say, but my facts are still facts.

As for it being a big issue, and people telling me it is know such thing. Then let me repeat here, what I said elsewhere, very simply...

You say it is nothing to get concerned about. Mmm. Ok, let me put it like this, if suddenly Nokia rolled a new firmware out for every single Symbian phone they do, and all of a sudden, on every single model, the Contacts List screen no longer adhered to adopted formats and conventions, and was suddenly solid white irrespective of the theme used, despite all the very hard work of all those talented designers, it would instantly be a MASSIVE issue, with hundreds of thousands of complaints.

So... if it is wrong if it applied to ALL models hypothetically, how come it is RIGHT when only applied to one model. No... no it is not. Not at all.

As for using the red letters to indicate the post... if this flaw, and the key-lock flaw, and the camera sounds issue, are potential reasons to hold off from updating the firmware for other users, then it is wholly and entirely correct, to flag this up in a manner that will not go missed.

I trust that more than covers all the relevant issues...

You're welcome. I also hate the standard icons, so this theme is great (first time I've used a custom theme.... ever. And I've used smartphones since 2002)

I've written a detailed overview of the new firmware , it's shortcomings and also how to correct the character keymap problem at

Good god you have a venting problem. The contact list is *fine* inte the new firmware, no problems whatsoever here.

I updated to the previous firmware more than a month ago, and I now have firmware v110.07.127 and the Nokia Software Updater does not propose to update to the newer v200.21.118 release. It offers me to reinstall v110.07.127 if I wish to do so.

Did Nokia pull this firmware update or is there a stale server somewhere ?
