Video: Scalado's PhotoFlow on the Nokia 5800

PhotoFlow, from Scalado, is a piece of software that can be used to view, and zoom-in on, images stored on the phone. While Gallery ties in with the rest of the phone (e.g. send as MMS) PhotoFlow is a better performer if you are simply interested in viewing images; as our video demonstrates, you are able to browse through images and zoom in much faster than the standard Gallery application. The app looks really impressive what even more impressive is that its a free app available in Download! & a high-quality app at that...:icon14:

PS: the vid quality is great...

HD quality makes it so much easier to get a better feel for the interface. More HD videos of the interface in general would be nice.

Seriously thinking about getting one of these, but...does anyone know if ActiveSync is available for it? For free? Being able to sync with Exchange server for work is a necessity...

This app looks awesome, finally justifies the touch interface for image browsing. I've been growing increasingly more disappointed and frustrated by s60 v5 and how poorly it takes advantage of what a touch UI can do. Glad to see someone else pushing the boundaries. I'm going to install it on my 5800 RIGHT NOW!

(To be honest, though, I think Apple and now Palm have set the bar so high on touch UI that I don't see how Nokia can catch up without a quantum leap in development. Now I just hope 3rd parties like Scalado can pick up the slack. )

I like the higher quality vid, by the way.

I'm not sure, but if it's not on the 5800 it should definitely be on the N97. That might be a better work phone anyway as it has a physical qwerty keyboard etc.

They don't really have legacy users to take care of though (Palm theoretically does but it's had pretty low sales over the last few years). It's much easier to design an interface when there's zero need to take care of existing users.

Apple's Mac interface is pretty dull looking compared to the iphone, but the reason is because they don't want to alienate existing Mac users. Nokia is in the same position with S60, they have a massive existing userbase which might not bother upgrading if the interface is totally new.

Nokia's taking far more risks with the interface on their internet tablets (especially the upcoming Maemo 5 tablet), and that too is because the tablet userbase is tiny so they don't have to worry about losing old customers. They're in a totally different position when it comes to phones.

It's funny really, having lots of customers gives you more money but it also restricts your freedom of movement. I suppose it's a bit like politics, if you're popular you don't want to risk rocking the boat with anything controversial, so politicians who are high in the polls tend to say very bland things.

Getting back to the topic, interfaces do have to evolve too, and I'd say the S60 5th Edition is the biggest step forward for S60 so far. It might not be perfect but it is much better IMHO than 3rd Edition. I'm looking forward to seeing what the N97 gives us as it appears to have a very new standby screen.

Yes Mail 4 Exchange is available for free in Download! too (this is Nokia's ActiveSync client). However the email client (Messaging) is the same as other Nokia's which may not be up to snuff for you. Personally I use GMail (most of the time) for email, but use Mail 4 Exchange to sync my calendar, contacts and tasks.

I'll look at doing a longer review video on the 5800 in HD which would include looking at the interface. Got a lot of oter things to do too though!

While I thank Scalado for making this app available for free, this is another example of the form-before-function philosophy for which I hate the iPhone (and love the 5800xm, despite its many, many, many flaws) so much. I was actually happy that in the 5800 Nokia had finally abandoned the carousel-like interface for browsing pictures. A carousel, while much more good-looking that a grid, can display fewer pictures, and therefore it's frustrating to use when you're looking for a specific one in a large set. Worse than the carousel-like interface of Gallery in the N82, in PhotoFlow you cannot create albums to categorize your photos (nor it recognize the two-level folder organization of the 5800 Gallery app), and instead all your photo collection is presented to you linearly in a ginormous circular sequence.
Add to this the fact that you cannot use PhotoFlow to do anything with pictures (in particular, you cannot send, edit, or even just delete), and it's clear that it's one of those applications that you keep around only to wow your friends when you demo the 5800.

Hi nice post If you don't mind I will translate it to Hebrew

The cool technology from Scalado that makes this application possible was going to be a core part of the next Symbian OS release. However their technology is proprietary so doesn't fit with the open source strategy... perhaps device manufacturers will license it and include it individually, otherwise they have to figure out how to monetise it separately. A little taster app like this now and then sell something more fully functional later seems like a reasonable plan.

grump - download is being its usual self - i wondered why i had not seen this.

Did a 'refresh' and got a folders can be loaded try again
i have full signal 3.5G

whats the problem with download!!

aaaaw thats just simply too AWESOME!! just what the 5800 needed! man this is amazing! now if there was a way to customize the media bar to use this app instead of the default gallery...

anyway, its in the Graphics folder in downloads, getting it now, will report back here on tis performance!

The open source strategy is not necessarily a bad thing. Given it is a third party component Symbian would have needed to make it optional anyway (since it's not a vital function). i.e. Just because it is included in Symbian OS it does not mean a license fee would not be payable. The same is true with the open source option of course, but Scalado will be able to do more integration work themselves in the future as they'll have full source code access. Potentially this could mean its easier for manufacturers to use Scalado.

Indeed Scalado could opt to donate a lite version to the foundation for 'free' and use that to entice manufacturers into an upgrade. That's one of the business models that has been quite widely discussed in the Symbian ecosystem.

BTW AFAIK the work to integrate CAPS and Symbian OS has been done, though clearly you would need to tweak it for individual hardware / apps.

whats the problem with download!!

Heh - where do we start? Maybe I should avoid starting another Dowbload! bashing session.

nokia's download app is slow and very naggy, but it gets the job done i guess...

anyway onto the app, its not as simple as the video shows it to be, you have to actually flick the photos themselves, otherwise you'll see something strange happening every time you try a flick! takes a good five minute session to get used to well, but overall nice app. sadly no delete photos or any other functions present, so its strictly a photo viewer only.
nevertheless, very pleasent interface! 4/5! 😃

am i the only one that cannot install the application? after i downloaded the file is says that the file contains error and then the installation aborts

Just installed Photoflow.

It's nice but browsing photos is a little tricky to get used to.

What a shame Nokia haven't supplied fully integrated gallery software of this quality.

Still, hard to maintain a complaint when software of this quality is free.

Thanks for the heads up!

is there any sis file that i can download? i cannot install this application.

wow, wow, this is simply cool ......and yes , high def video it has to be

Hi, has anyone else encountered this problem? I tried downloading this app but it crashed out near the end saying corrupted file...but the 5800 thinks I have already downloaded it and won't let me download it again or install it - just a message saying the file is corrupt. How can I get rid of this download to try again?

Hi,
Saw this and wanted it straight away!! went onto the download menu and it can up with an Apps/graphics/tone and promo folder, NONE of which contained the application!! what do i do to get it? I tried refreshing but it still hasn't come up?!?!?
HELP PLEASE!

The more HD or HQ videos the better...too easy to miss things if it's not clear and crisp.

imtrying to download the photoflow app to my phone but it keeps saying "certificate expired" can any1 help?

Um, I just tried this on my 5800 (v21.0.025.286.02 )

and it seems to only see the phone pics, and not the card... cannot see where to change this.... 😛

OK, fuller test... It will only see the 'images' folder, buuuuut.... it treats the folders inside like they do not exist!
.... even in 'gallery' you can make a 'virtual' folder to put things in..

- PLEASE add folders, guys.. Even better why cannot the **existing** folder structure be used???? - this would save on the user having to generate new virtual folders all the time!!

- add menu entry to "open photo in viewer" !!!

- bug?? surely you should be able to select the card some how..

In the OVi store under applications, no longer free, now 3 in UK

can any one tell me from where to downlaod this software for free
