grps data speeds

Does anyone know in practice what sort of data rates they are getting (kb per sec) out of their gprs connection? just curious to know what it was like. Iknow its not as important as it is not something you pay for by time, but its handy to know when you use it for other things with a pda

thanks,

thanks for the info. didn't realise it could be that fast - I certainly don't get that using it with my ipaq. Guess the bluetooth serial on the ipaq limits it

hi, my gprs connection is with vodafone, and i've never problem with file transferring and i go faster then what the site says
bye

When I asked the Vodafone GR CC about this, I was told that for GPRS there are up to 4 channels of 13kbps (kilobits/sec) that can be used, depending on the traffic in the area. They can only "guarantee" 1 of the 4 and it also depends on the phone itself. So, each connection we make can be a lot different, with a maximum rate of 13x4 kbps...

Not exactly true... As far as I know there are 5 channels. Most phones use one of them for upstream and 4 for dowstream. The 7650 handles this in a different way: It uses 2 channels for upstream and 3 for downstream. So we've only got 13.4x3 kbps which sums up to 40.2 kbps...
Btw this is also the case for HSCSD connections: 5 channels => 2 upstream, 3 downstream wich is 14.4x3=43.2 kbps. Nokia has done it this way since the 6210...

the GPRS system allows for up to 8 time slots, if all are used a max of 171.2kbps is possible (theoretically).
Networks with resource allocation limits etc are more likely to use 1-4 timeslots, much like HSCSD which requires freeing of call space on the network. As Petran has stated, Voda can allocate up to 4 slots but only 1 is guaranteed, so at a bad time it could be dead slow or at its best it could be twice as fast (assuming the phone uses 2 up 2 down). 😃

I used to subscribe to the HSCSD service on Orange UK and they use 2 up 2 down for 28.8k transfers.
As it currently stands the phones ability just exceeds the features of some networks around the world 😊

I have Vodafone Germany and my HSCSD download speed is definitely faster than 28.8 kbps. I think that I am really able to use all 3 download channels supported by the 7650. A friend of mine using the SE T68i reported the same to me. I don't know any details about the GPRS speed though.
