The Ovi Store, announced by Nokia today at MWC, is the Finnish entry into the rapidly growing market for on-device software stores. Promoting their reach of 50 million devices and a simple route to market for developers, Nokia's presentation hit all the right notes. The revenue split of 70% to developers was also clearly announced, along with publish.ovi.com, which is open for developers from today.

Read on in the full article.

But are applications and games still going to need to be signed via Symbian signed first, before being submitted to the store? or can they be signed in publish.ovi.com

Nokia, well done. It took some time but from the details being available so far it looks very promising indeed. Especially having multiple paying options is good for countries where credit card payment isn't pervasive. What is going to be interesting is the cost of payment.

This isn't just for software, the Ovi Store publisher site accepts submissions for content such as music, video, themes, wallpaper, ringtones, podcasts etc.

Nokia forgets about E90. Again. From the OVI Q&A:

E90 is not supported at launch in May with a dedicated client, but will be able to access Ovi Store's XHTML site for content.

Excellent stuff, but they also need micropayments, big time. This is a glaring omission from iPhone appstore. It would enable developers to sell extra content/upgrades/subscriptions for a app/service etc that a user already has installed.

no phone will have a dedicated client when the store go's live
the n97 will be 1st phone to have OVI store it was said at the presentation
other phones will probably have to wait for firmware upgrades i suppose

Why even create a "mobile" client for E90?!? Screen size and resolution on E90 can handle the full version of shop.

Or dont you realise that

"E90 is not supported at launch in May with a dedicated client, but will be able to access Ovi Store's XHTML site for content."

means that E90 can handle the full version of shop. The mobile client is inferior to that.

The "location aware" bit is clearly a gimmick, but I'm happy Nokia is getting a proper app store.

The writer knows the mobile industry but isn't expert at putting it over. There are some tortured sentences, of which this is a corker:

"What both these new areas do bring attention to is the navigating through the Ovi Store."

The whole piece really needs the attention of a good sub-editor.

Furthermore, it's called the 'recommender system', not 'recommendation engine'. Amazon didn't pioneer it but they have certainly exploited it.
