Picked up an N85

thas all i got on mine other people might have some other sugestions like browers ect but i personally dont browse online on my fone more than whats above

I have just got my n85 on friday as my upgrade from a SE k850i. It's my first symbian phone and i think it's great.

Apps:- the phone came with iPlayer pre installed and it works great. One thing i have noticed though is that for some reason i can't use wifi to download a licence to play any iplayer programs i have downloaded, but i can get the licence if i connect via 3g or GPRS to upgrade the licence instead.

I have downloaded a couple of more apps too:-
Weatherbug - weather updates for where i am.
Fring - an instant messaging program that works with MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ etc.
I got these free from the Download! option on my phone menu.

As far as settings go, i haven't changed much. I have turned on remote locking (means you can lock your phone via text message if you lose it, or if someone is using it too much!). I have setup the WLAN so that the phone accesses the internet using my home network instead of 3g. I also deleted all the preinstalled pictures, bookmarks etc that i will never use.

how did you get these? (literally)
and I can't see fring and other apps under the Download! app on my menu

Fring is in the Download menu, i got it yesterday. Have a look under Download--> Applications and it's there towards the bottom o the list.

After having the N85 for a few days, I have to say I am quietly impressed. Good build quality, nice size, responsive menu. The screen is excellent, also.

I was going to add, does anyone else have an issue with the data cable? I find it is a real struggle to remove the cable, I really have to pull, feels like I'm gonna rip the guts out of the phone!

does your mobile not rattle when your n85 is slid up and you tap the keymat, gently enough to not actually press on the keys ?

Nope, no rattling here, at all. I am rather impressed overall, the slide springs open nicely, the weight of the phone is almost ideal, there is no funny creaking or squeaking noises anywhere. Very solid handset.

No build quality issues here either (only poor quality software issues!) Have had the N85 since November (UK model) and it's holding up well to daily use (although the raised part of the camera lens slider has been chipped, somehow!)

I really like the OLED screen and it's impressive to see the date/time constantly on display when using the screensaver - takes me back to the old black & white mobile phones of the past! 😊 It's a small feature but all the more impressive after so many years of blank displays on colour phones.

Acquired an N85 this morning, and it's MUCH better than i was led to believe 😊.
Build is vastly better than original N95 and N958gb, great mix of features too.

Had mine since November had many N's but came from 20 mths of usuing N95 - I think it is more solid, has a better feel, like it would even 'cost' more. I agree that the software is a little unstable ~ less sorted.

I've obviously been missing something. How do you access/use the remote text lock, i've never heard of it.

Menu - Tools - Settings - General - Security - Phone and Sim Card - Remote phone locking.

Change remote phone locking to enabled and enter text you wish to use to lock the phone. Now if you need to lock your phone, simply text it from another phone with the same message you programmed into your phone. When your phone receives the text it will automatically lock your phone AND memory card until you type in your unlock code.

That never ever worked for me no matter how many times I tried it.

It's case sensitive. When you type the code in the settings screen the phone starts in lowercase. When you start typing a text it starts off with the first letter uppercase. Works fine here when I type it in the right case.

Correct, it's like a password - case sensitive. Make sure when you write the original text, along with the remote locking text message when you want to lock the phone that it's all in lowercase or CAPITALS just to be sure 😊

No problem. Glad it works for you. And yeah, 12345 is known to just about everyone so change it🙄
