Mobile Royale would like developers to work on a decent Twitter interface for S60 devices. They've posted their challenge on-line, and are pointing to the interface that the Google Search plug-in, and asking for 'something like that' so people can tweet directly from the stand-by screen. There are a number of Twitter clients for S60 available, and a number that are in development, so will anyone take up the challenge?

...and don't forget All About N-Gage's Twitter channel too:

Getting back on topic, surely the whole point of Twitter is that you can post to it and receive messages through any phone without a client, by using SMS?
If you need a client to post to Twitter, then IMHO it's no better than posting to a blog or website, and pretty pointless.
I disagree that the point is SMS - that allows you to broadcast to Twitter, but it's become more than that, as people respond to you with @replies, and I am also able to help folks out by keeping a search tab for 'nokia' open.
Also, don't forget, Gravity (http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2009/02/gravity-pulls-you-into-twitter-on-your-s60-smartphone.html) is coming soon, in closed beta now, with the public availability expected sometime in early march, along with an S60v5 client. Gravity currently supports @replies, DMs, retweets, opening URLs, multiple accounts, and searching, and the latest version has twitpic support, though it's touch-and-go for now.
but it's become more than that, as people respond to you with @replies, and I am also able to help folks out by keeping a search tab for 'nokia' open.
But you could already do that on conventional blogs, couldn't you?
I'm not an expert admittedly, pretty new to it, but there's nothing I've seen so far that's any different from Blogger except the very tight word limit.

In Ireland we don't have a loca number to send SMS to. Besides, those yokes cost money. I'll stick with my client over WiFi/data bundle thanks.
I got big hopes for Gravity, as there isn't a good twitter client for S60 at all. That STEW one gets close, but still lacks a lot of features. Another one to keep an eye on is http://code.google.com/p/twits60/ as it's meant to be a pure S60-toolkit-using clean C++ client.
Fring also has a twitter interface now (so you only need one app for practically EVERY chat client)
Its annoying though that the incoming notification tones are so loud or you have to change them.
Either way tho.. yeah, it would be good to have some more embedded twitter client *if people choose to have it embedded* If I had a for everytime someone asked how to remove ShareOnline.. :0
Thanks for the link, Ewan.
I believe that there's a potential in a standby Tweet plugin - a simple example is why did Google create a standby search plugin when people could already search Google using the inbuilt web browser. Because it is always easier and mainly due to the fact that you use Twitter to update, and it is always handy to have it in just one click. And, since GPRS is cheaper than texts in many countries, this would prove to be a popular method.

not true - here in the UK, you can only post updates to Twitter by SMS. they cancelled the ability to receive notifications from Twitter here in the UK sometime last year, and from the looks of things it looks like it'll never be re-enabled. The excuse was that it was costing them too much money to send the users in the UK text message updates.
on my E90 i have Twim and WirelessIRC installed (the latter of which has Twitter capabilities) and although they do work, they're not the best that could be done. I agree that there should be a way to easily update from the standby screen, such as a widget that's been suggested already.
since recently moving over to the Android platform, i've been using Twidroid and am really impressed with it's capabilities and general interface. something similar for the Symbian platform would be a great boon to help the take-up of Twitter amongst Symbian users...especially with the proposed Ovi Market.
I have tried all the clients I can find for S60 and still just end up using a bookmark to the mobile web page from my home screen. Most apps are ether Java and not properly touch enabled for 5th or part of a 'non specific' apps that just includes twitter as an add on.
As mentioned STEW is getting there but not ready yet (cant follow links, grr).
One thing I really want to do with Twitter and my 5800 is be able to post a tweet with a link to my location in google maps using my GPS. There are apps in the iphone that will do this exact thing, someone must be able to do this with s60. There are s60 apps that supposedly change the 'location field' of your profile but that's not what I need.
Any ideas? Anyone else interested in this or is it just me.

i don't think you're alone here. Twidroid for Android handsets already has this feature, and as you've said there's already applications for the iPhone 3G with this capability.
Twibble is a Symbian Twitter client that I'm using for over 2 months now. It is certainly not perfect but does the job. Also has GPS support.
Just to note, Gravity is still in closed Beta right now, but nearing completion. It already has many advantages over existing clients, one being its also optimized for Touch UI now too, plus a whole load of extra features being implemented.
It should be available at the end of this month all being well.
yeah, Im using Twibble at the moment... works ok, though not perfect by anymeans.
Will keep my eyes out for Gravity...
