The ill-fated 'Red' UK Nokia 5800s finally get v20 firmware

Just a note that if you're the owner of a UK-bought 'red' Nokia 5800 and have been champing at the bit for a bit of v20 firmware action, it's now online for you, bringing faster operation, Search, geotagging in Camera and more. See Nokia Software Update or check your on-device firmware updater with *#0000# etc.

Read on in the full article.

Note that some people are reporting this only via NSU and not over the air.... Doubtless both will get in sync soon.

The real question is: where's v21 firmware to fix all the little slowdowns and niggles?

Nokia must now have server capacity to handle the updates for all the masses of reds that were sold. This product code business is a handy way of controlling and staggering the number of updates that will be downloaded at once to prevent overload of the update system.
However I, like many others, lost patience and changed product code weeks ago to get the update.

If your someone like me who purchased from Nokia Uk and had v10 on your phone then you can only update via Nokia care. The NSU update was pulled for v10 phones as due to a fault they crashed updating via NSU.
Once v11 or later is installed the fault is cleared and you can update normally.

I have just tried over the air update and it still says there is no update currently available.
How do you change product code?
Going to TRY NSU and see if that works.

Tested NSU and it says phone is not supported. What is Nokia care and how do I go about contacting them?

The general rule for getting support is:

-go to nokia.com/support

-choose your region to see your local Nokia site

-click on the support tab

(don't know where else to put this, move it if you feel it should be moved)

Speaking of 5800 firmware, i was in the London flagship shop last night (again. i go there, a lot). I think its great that they have shedloads of 5800's powered up and ready to play with.

BUT...

All of the ones i checked were still on version 10 or 11. Hasn't there been several firmware updates since then, with great improvements made in most of the updates?

I could be talking through my seat, but if you're going to have all these phones out out for people to try out, shouldn't they be as up to date as possible to show what the phone CAN do? Not what it used to be able to do (slowly, unresponsively)? Example. Joe Punter; "It has I-Player? Really?!?! And you can store the shows for later, not just stream them?!?!?! WOW!"

And start having at least of the available apps installed on the these demo phones. Again, let people see what these devices can do.

It also sort of annoyed me that all those 5800's in the front windows were doing...nothing. Just the blank NOKIA on beige screensaver. Chuck some movies/music video's/(Ewans 5800 travelogue?😉) on those devices on a loop. Have the phones doing SOMETHING in the window. Even the rest of the non-5800 models inside have some kind of animated screensaver.

Perhaps its not fair that the 'fruit shop' is across the road, but it makes the flagship look dowdy in comparison. All their phones have shedloads of games, apps, music tracks, videos, etc on them (and are connected to the internet). No wonder 90% of high street browsers would be sucked in like moths to a flame.

UKJeeper, it's not possible to store BBC iPlayer shows for playing back later on th 5800. You can only stream over WiFi. That's true whatever version of firmware is installed.

So... "Search" is now present on the home screen, but selecting it just produces "System Error".

That's it. Never again. I'm not going to buy another Nokia device until it's been around for at least a year.

Like Neil I'm getting a bit pissed off by Nokia's shoddy QA. Search does indeed return a system error.

at neilhoskins and Mark Anderson. To fix the 'system error' search bug first pull out your memory card and run search. Replace the card and everything then works as normal

And note that iPlayer 'Downloads' don't now work anymore - the BBC pulled the plug for reasons which I won't go into here....

I have no idea where people got the idea from that this was only red 5800s. My partners blue 5800 finally has the V20 update available as of today. Product code 0579934

My O2 "red" 5800 is not updatable yet... NSU says it is on the latest version (11.0.009) and the online updater also doesn't work.

Only bought it last weekend and was disppointed that it wouldn't update. Then I saw your post saying that it is now available and I was happy but now I am disappointed again!

the new update is for the newly released US 5800 only. not in europe or asia. the NSU (Nokia Software Update) and OTA (Over The Air) would just say that the phone is up to date or no updates.

US: v20.2.014 😞
released 17/03/09
europe and everywhere else: v20.0.012
released 2 months back.

but the US' recent update is the same fixes as v20.0.012 of europe update. dang.... and i thought there was already new fixes for the extremely bug infested v20. the F***ing thing s**ks! (Billo)

For those that still have no update available the answer is in a allaboutsymbian forum dicussion thread:

Why?!?!?

Now the v20 firmware is available - iPlayer downloads are not?

That was the main reason I was waiting for this release.

Is this a temporary thing? What was the reason?

As I understand it:

January 2009 - 5800 released in UK with v10 or v11 firmware. Allows streaming of iplayer but no downloading.

February 2009 - v20 of 5800 firmware released. Allows for downloading of iPlayer shows for watching later when using iplayer software v1.6. "Download" icon appears below the "play now" icon on iPlayer shows.

March 2009 - download functionalitiy of iPlayer stops working despite no firmware or software changing on the phone.

Question: What has happened at the BBC end to prevent the 5800 from downloading shows?Have they decided to withdraw this functionality from all phones (including n85, n96) or just the 5800? Will the download functionality reappear on the 5800?

I'd appreciate an answer from someone that actually knows rather than speculation.

Although, very annoyingly, the Nokia 5800 download function no longer works from the iPlayer app on the phone - it is possible to download iplayer content via a PC using the portable media player download option, and then copy it to the phone. This then plays fine!

Not as convenient as loading it directly via the phone via wi-fi - but at least its possible!

Come on BBC - please fix the issue with the download button on Nokia 5800 iplayer app - this was working before!

So you CAN download Iplayer programs (although indirectly), store them on the phone, and play them back 'offline'?

So my original idea of doing this in the flagship window still has merit (once Nokia asks the Beeb's permission, i imagine). Update the firmware, put Iplayer shows on some of the phones. GarminXT, Viewranger, Sportstracker, WorldMate, Weatherbug etc on the others. Teach the floorwalkers how to use the apps, and then let the users SEE what the phone is capable of.

Seems to work well as a sales technique across the road.

I've tried to get iPlayer downloads to play back on the 5800, I've not yet been successful. It seems to be a DRM problem. Remember there is a license that has to be embedded to put a time limit on playback. It's not straightforward to get this to go onto the 5800.

However, as with any Symbian phone or any device, such as the N95 etc, that has RealPlayer on it, you can transfer video on and play it back. In fact you can rip a whole DVD movie and copy it on over USB to play it back later. Nothing new there and nothing unique to 5800s, Nokia, phones or any device. All portable media players have video on them already.

Nokia won't be able to use downloaded and stored BBC programs in their flagship store because of copyright and DRM issues. That's why they all come pre-loaded with Nokias own videos and promotional music deal.

Nokia getting agreement with BBC for iPlayer? I doubt it. It's a premium phone thing, they might be able to get excerpts, but there is no good for Nokia to make a promise instore that it's difficult not possible to keep long term.

There's always more to this stuff than first meets the eyeplayer.

OK, so stuff the I-Player idea. The concept of showing the users what the phone can do by sticking several apps (and the most recent firmware) on there still holds water.

So can I :

Do a v11 firmware backup on the device (to card)
Then do a firmware update
Then do a reset (to fix unlock code issue)
Then restore old backup to get apps/data back ?

Thanks,

Zuber

Tried updating my 5800 (Orange network, product code 0576921) and got nothing. Although there was an update from v008 to v009 which I must have missed previously, so not all lost I guess.

Hope we get an update soon, I've ran into a few niggly issues when using the phone (entering text into online forums, music player muting songs, crashes etc)
