N95 8GB always connects to WLAN...

Long time reader but only joined today 😊

I have an N95 8GB which I've had since launch. All of a sudden, whenever I'm at home, my phone likes to connect to my WLAN without my permission...

I have no applications running and it still does it. I do have my email account set up in messaging but auto-receive is off. I have looked around in all the settings associated with email and WLAN access points but can't seem to find any options ;/

Any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have any VOIP internet phone apps? e.g. Truphone?

Nope, Voda UK dont allows VoIP. The only app I ever leave running is the music player and thats about it. Even if i manually disconnect from my WLAN from WLAN scan on active standby or current data connections, after 1 minute, it wants to reconnect -.-

The thing is it would not mind me much but it drains my battery and I have to continually recharge!

Edit: Have removed the email account in messaging too and the problem persists ;/

You can configure Wireless to use a lower power setting (the default is 100mw but you can go as low as 4mw with little loss of range).
This would make the battery last longer, but you really need to find out what's causing the constant wireless connection in the first place, as what you are experiencing is not normal activity.

Personally, I would format the internal memory and remove any Memory card to see if the problem goes away.

Hello,

Go to your settings connection wireless lan and change it to never hope that help 😊

Just to test, click the "web", then "options", then "settings" and then "general" and in 'Access point' select "Always ask" and then press "back" to save this setting. Observe your phone that wants to connect to WiFi. If it is because of your "web" application then it should show you all your access points from which to select one. If your phone still wants to connect to WiFi as usual then there is surely an application running which needs to connect to WiFi. May be "Share online" or some weather forcast software which you could have loaded.
Then in the second step, I would recommend you to type *#7780# to reset your phone to factory defaults. If you still experience problem then hard formatting is the solution which can be done by typing *#7370#. But before doing this you must backup your phone on memory card and you must copy all your contacts to memory card.
I think this will solve your problem.

i think it has to be some sort of software process running (which is not visible in the taskmanager)
I know of three applications that are preset to constantly connecting to the web if not disabled: Nokia Image Exchange, Dailyme TV and Worldmate.

try also to go to menu->tools->protocol and press the right dpad key. youll see all connections your phone established just look for those wlan connections. then you'll see how much data has been transferred. if its only a few kb's it's probably not an application causing the connection; then I'd do the hard reset.

Hi, I'm new to forum but was interested to see what was recommended to solve your problem. I have something similar with the n95-1 and despite all advice so far still haven't solved it. However, Nokia recommended checking out all 3rd party applications and suggested 'fring' might be a problem - I did that but it persisted. I also read somewhere that (possibly in connection with an Apple iPod) that Google Talk can be a problem and that one has to change the password otherwise it will still try to keep track of where you are!

I had a gifted Orange branded handset that was legally unlocked with a code they supplied.

Gifted n95-1 0548170
Unlocked by Orange UK
IMIE 352 255 014 580 744

As recommended earlier, I had been able to upgrade my firmware to v30 and also put a larger memory card in (8Gb) which also works very well.

However, I am having problems with automatic web access which is costing me a lot of money because I can find no way of stopping the n95 from trying to go online about every 15 minutes (presumably to access email) when I am connected to a network. I use different pre pay sim cards depending upon which country I am in but the problem seems to be generated by the handset.

I do not wish to access a mobile internet service. I prefer to use only wifi and in an effort to stop these connections, I have tried the settings listed below.

1. Internet access - OFF LINE MODE ONLY
(fine but I need to make network calls as well)

2. 3G - DISABLED
(great for prolonging battery life and stopping mobile from trying to access web abroad on pre pays that allow that)

3. Auto Email facility - DISABLED

4. Mail box specification NONE

5. Multimedia Access point - NOT DEFINED

6. 'Fring' removed

Like you, I am still trying to fix this bug which is very expensive with pre pay, especially abroad! In my case branding may be an issue since many Orange 'bits' remain which cannot be deleted. However, even with GPRS it still tries to log on all day long except when in off line mode.

It would be great to try a fix which solves your problem - it might help some of us with the earlier model of n95. Good Luck, J (Apologies for such a lengthy posting - I hope it may be useful to you.)
