can you please tell me if you can do voip on n97
n82 is great for its sip integration ... you can define a sip service ...
and when you make a call you have the option to make voice/video or internet calls
you can even make internet calls to be the default calls
thank you!
steve , does the N97 have 45 mb RAM with Nokia messaging installed or without? ive noticed on my E90 that there is a significant decrease in free RAM after installing Nokia Messaging...
i just cant seem to get over the fact that Nokia left only 45 mb ram free.... i know you say that it should increase with firmware upgrades , i don't think that's going to be the case...
Nokia has confirmed about adding features in later firmware with includes skype ... i think that with optimisations and added features the RAM will either remain the same or decrease... i personally don't think 45mb is sufficient for my usage .. i do tend to multi task a lot... and my e90 does go down to 4-5 mb FREE RAM...
lets see what happen though ...
congrats on the n97... njoi the new device...
love your views on smartphones and keep the good work coming ... looking forward to your featured part by part review ... of the N97
Hello Buster,
a qwerty or azerty (I'm a french guy) is not very useful and practical according to me.Type a long text on so small touches... I ask to see. For me it 's more about a "gadget".
A touchscreen ? Yes but there are many other devices of different competitors which have already touch technology. It 's not very innovative.
As you say it, it 's only new for Nokia.
And if we are honest, it's necessary to recognize, as somebody said in a previous post, that the N95 can do all that N97 can make.
What I simply wanted to say it's that we tend to glorify too much certain devices.
But it's true that I 'm not a real geek. It's maybe for that...
I wanna know if possible to use TV-Out cable from my N82 to use with N97, guess no problem with that.

I'm counting on it. I've got two for my N95 that I'd like to use, since one doesn't come with the N97.
The fm transmiter is illegal in the uk right ????????????
They might as well not bothered with the keyboard if it's that poor as all it does is add size & bulk to the N97.
I'm interested in seeing a an uncropped picture of the N97 next to the 5800, I'm interested because this is a really good improvement over the already brilliant 5800, but I can't have a large phone.
I already find the 5800 a little bit too big but I am prepared to make an allowance for it because it is so good. If the N97 is much bigger then it's no good to me. A phone has to be compact an pocketable, it's no use having a huge lump that you almost need a backpack to carry it (like the pie-phone).
Great first impressions piece and photos.
I am really having difficulty getting my head round this "N97 keyboard is worse than the E71" stuff.
I love my E71 and I can see that the buttons are physically much nicer than on the N97, with more rounding and better travel - but I can't work out how I or any "average" user would type an email, sms or a note any slower on the N97.
I am typing with my thumbs or fore-fingers and it seems that the same technique would work a least as well on the N97 but with fewer errors as the keys have more space between them.
Also the space bar location seems to be intended to be easy to hit with the right thumb - an intelligent design choice I would have thought but you don't seem to like it.
I have also heard that the device takes advantage of the practised dexterity of the Playstation generation and this also makes sense to me.
Any chance of doing a wpm comparison with a decent sample size (i.e. at least 5 people) to provide some objectivity and perhaps even come to a "surprise" conclusion.
This will be the deciding factor for me in whether or not to upgrade to the N97 - but don't worry I will do the test myself (with a sample size of 1!) if you guys don't.

Some promotion material from Nokia showed the tiles elegantly rearranging on rotation but all the real videos I have seen show the screen going black between the 2 states..... Generally speaking does the UI have 'wow' factor or not ?
If it does have that, these are just trivial points, they are not substantial useful things, these are just nice-to-haves that you would get bored with after 5 minutes, but would pointlessly use processor power forever. There are much more fundamentally important things that should be further up the priority list than superficial frivolous surface dressing.
don't understand why everybody waits for this telephone as the messiah...
It has nothing very innovative except a customizable homescreen. Beyond that no innovation with regard to previous Nseries !
A bad processor...I don't understand this expectation !
1. It's the first S60 phone with a touchscreen, and a keyboard to boot. A touchscreen S60 device would be as newsworthy as an iPhone with a keyboard.
2. A lot of us really like S60. 😊
3. i wouldn't say it has no innovations. It has a compass, 32GB of internal memory with expansion, and uses the GPS for location-based services like weather. If you're comparing it against the N-series exclusively, the touch screen and QWERTY keyboard would also count as innovations.
4. Despite early reports saying the N97 doesn't slow down with multiple apps open, i'd still go for a more powerful processor. Of course, battery life would suffer, particularly with this downloading information via widgets all the time. Also, look at the Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2. Same processor, and despite a larger screen on the Touch Pro 2, it's more responsive overall than it's predecessor. Again, i'd like more raw power (same with RAM), but there's a lot to be said about optimization.
Hi Rafe,
Just a note, I am not sure if it is just in the current firmware but the i8910HD has removed the ability to pre-focus during video record which I am very disappointed with. I hope it will return.

The 5800 was good but not a big news item.

20 millions iPhones later and some people still don't get it !
I completely agree it's trivial and not very useful things ! I own a E71 and it does all the useful things I need and also not so useful things (stream internet radio, auto podcast download) and does it well. But if I am going to go for a 500 phone, it'd better be enjoyable to own and use as well as being useful so I don't think it's besides the point.

That's not actually the case.
Nokia devices get support and firmware updates in direct proportion to how well they sell.
Devices (and most other things) sell primarily on their sensory appeal, mainly how good they look and how good they feel in the hand in the case of mobiles. The iPhone is a great case in point for this. Very few people are more concerned by what a device can do than what it looks like.
So if you want your new N97 to be well supported by Nokia you need it to sell well which means that transitions and other "eye-candy" are important.
sorry but someone who tested the N97 can tell me if the SKYPE client is there!??!
Unregistered wrote:sorry but someone who tested the N97 can tell me if the SKYPE client is there!??!
It's not. Presumably, it'll appear later in a firmware update.

There is a dichotomy here. Sad geeks and normal people. I have a thousand things I can enjoy before I need to turn to my phone for enjoyment, god forbid that I ever have to worry about enjoying my phone. Fortunately Nokia know that the vast majority of people are normal and have lives which is why they are not so bothered about this stuff as some people round here think they should be.
The iPhone caught the moment very well and sold quite a few phones (still a fraction of Nokia sales) but most people in CPW are looking, and then saying "very nice but what else is there that is value for money and will fit in my pocket". I work in an office that benefits from a 30% discount on O2 phones and contracts. Two out of sixty have iPhones. Not impressed by gimmicks.

LOL! Not only are you right but quite funny too!
How is the music play back and sound, can it show album art etc? i've read that the Hinges will break over time? i have an E90 and in less than a year the hinges broke, i love the n97 but that hinges thing have me worried and kinda, almost looking at the Palm Pre

Can someone please explain the point of including a compass? Isn't it a bit redundant with GPS? Surely anyone who really, really needs a compass is going to have one that doesn't need batteries.
Hi guys,
How are the s60v3 N-Gage games on the N97? I read they are zoomed from 320x240 with 1.5 to 480x360 automatically. Is this true?
Thank you.

I assume is help to define which direction you are facing when veiwing your location on the maps. Having used GPS on other phones it's difficult if you are not near road signs. I have ended up walking several feet down a crossroads and waiting for the gps to register which direction I have moved in to orientate myself. Personally I think it is a good idea if, indeed, this is what it does. I don't think it would be wise to rely on it for crossing the Kalahari Dessert, but maybe useful to find a Kebab shop in a hurry...?
Does the phone support over the air updates here in the states? I had a N95 8GB a while ago and was really bothered by the fact that I couldn't perform simple OTA updates to the phone's software here in the states, when I could and easily did so on all of the old SE dumb phones I've owned. I think it's kind of lame to have to link a "smart phone" to a computer just to perform a software update btw... Thanks!
i bought my 5800 after reading ur in depth review on the phone here. looking forward to the same treatment on the n97 too.
Thanks all, it's the weekend here now and Rafe and I were both out all yesterday. I've updated the review text (keyboard and conclusion sections mainly) and will get to some more of your questions on Monday! 8-)
Steve
I really dont like that the D-pad is on the left side of the QWERTY keyboard.
got it yesterday- first impressions great but...quite a large mobile and running few applications will really slow it down. opening 2 many will resolve in screen freezing and if you get a call at the same time you won't be able to answer. if you are sensible with it- great new phone!!!

It is so you can use maps while walking. It turns the map to face the direction you are going. Very usefull! I was once trying to get to the train station in Venice once using TOMTOM on my N80IE and it was useless because it coulden't update fast enough to point me in the right direction. A compass would have been very usefull.
get it.
Ciao ciao
