Somewhere there's a bundle of ex-Symbian employees quietly muttering “I told them the way forward was a two-box solution....” What to make of the announcement of the Nokia Booklet 3G (beyond the fact that they're consciously avoiding the term 'netbook', even though every single post, tweet and message about this device is going to call it the Nokia Netbook)? Read on for my thoughts on this new mobile device...

Another netbook... Only interesting if it ways less then one kilo, and I suspect it doesn't.
Hi,
Yeah, it is a nice device! And I also agree it is placed in a different segment, at-least not a Symbian competitor for now.
As you mentioned for Nokia, to make its mark in the netbook space, it needed something that can be built quiet fast. I agree Windows is a good option given the time constraint and hardware "constraint".
Well, I feel hardware is a constraint since Atom is definitely not the best processor available in market to support booklets. I hope, Nokia would venture into other processors and possibly move to its maemo platform in the long run (instead of getting pushed by Intel to use just Atom and Moblin). I agree Intel has a major advantage now, given the fact that Atom is supported by Windows and that it is pretty easy for a manufacturer to bundle this and come up with their own "booklet".

1,25kg... I prefer Dell Mini 9 with 3G and 1kg and a price around 200 - 300€.
i have seen At&t advertising a netbook that comes with a plan they are selling. so i guess nokia is expecting carriers to resell their "booklets" in the same way carriers resell their phones. i think this is a good move and i look for samsung and others to follow.
Likely to be a premium netbook.
Nice specs but i bet it's around 500.
The real differentiation will be OVI services integration - GPS, nice screen, wwan, etc is already out there on various models.
OVI Services integration means what?
Nokia Music Store - meh
Nokia Maps Integration - I've never really undertsood the use cases for GPS on a netbook.
Nokia OVI Files - Steve has pointed out the benefits already but plenty of alternative online storage solutions although not all will also sync with your handset admittedly.
All in all, a thoroughly worthy product unlikley to sell a lot.
The elephant in the room will be the N900 - a far more exciting mobile web product.
So it has a SIM card slot (or is that required in any case for the 3G connectivity)?

Of course its required, or at least as long as 3G=UMTS/HSDPA. I seriously doubt that there will be version for any non-GSM based 3G.
Price is 399 before tax.
A very interesting article and might the Nokia Booklet 3G powered by Windows 7 be the first visible result of the Microsoft-Nokia-alliance earlier this month ?

It should be very interesting when Apple drops their "device" as well. Can't wait. This should be a great autumn for all tech-heads.
What we all really want is a range of devices, say from the Revo, Psion 5 to the Psion 7 form factor 😊 Come on, Nokia give the people what they want! Maemo running on netbooks of various sizes with touch screen and 3G connectivity.
Windows, Maemo, Symbian^2, ^3, ^4...
The strategy going forward seemed (relatively) simple a mere 2 weeks ago.
That Guardian piece on Nokia producing a Google phone, why not? 😉
Odd, my web browser must be broken? I keep pointing it to AllAboutSymbian but AllAboutNokia keeps popping up? Think I'll try deleting my cookies, see if that helps...
Hi,
I'm disapointed that nokia didn't put a breakthrough device, a WOW device. But instead they put a 'yet another netbook' things. This kind of netbook is about the same specs as others. I know that nokia have put some esthetic's technology, but I was expecting more. Something to beat oQo on the UMPC. or something inovative with the moblin http://www.moblin.org. After all, nokia have invested so much on maemo, and moblin is the maemo on x86 platform.
This Windows OS is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO boringgggggg... I really wish that nokia bring moblin because moblin really nokia-ish on the interface.
I don't understand why you guys are so negative about it. What were you expecting? Maemo? sure it will be great for you gadget geeks, tinkerers, and linux aficionados. But it will not have mass appeal without windows. This 3g booklet "might' not sell well but do you honestly believe it will sell better with Maemo in it?
Also would you rather AAS block-out other stuff release by Nokia just because it's no symbian. It's related = it's news.
