Oooh, i like this! Seems a lot quicker to load and to use, much more touch friendly too

Yeah, just installed this, loads very fast, seems to get a lock faster, the GPS signal strength is stronger and it also seemed to rotate the map without me needing to calibrate the compass!

My GPS was ok before, but seems better now.

Very fast. Locks in seconds. Like the new layout and the ability to define Home location. Does seem to be much more touch sensitive. :icon14:

Am still wondering how Ovi Maps handles speed cameras. When I tried out the trial version on my N95, I had it showing fixed camera locations, but it did not seem to show mobile camera locations.

This for me seemed a big failing, as there are more mobile camera positions than fixed

Well it can't detect Radar and mobile positions could be anywhere in the country. The best way not to get caught? Don't speed.

I know it cannot detect them, but like other sat nav applications, the database has probable locations. The previous Maps would show the fixed, but would not show the mobile locations that it knows about.

Just wondered if this new one, also contained the list of probable mobile sites

Lol how naive - let me guess - you constantly have one foot on the brake as well as the accelerator and never stray even a mile over the limit - even downhill?

Its far to easy to stray over the limit on some roads and sods law dictates that a camera will just be round the corner.

I think the point that zyyb was making is that the only way to not get caught speeding is to not be speeding... not sure it was a comment on speeding itself. as you say, everybody does it at some time or other...

relying on satnav to tell you that there was a copper parked in the next layby with a camera one day 6 months ago is only going to make you complacent...

lol - yeah - still police about on the roads though! I completely forgot my N95 pointed out speed cameras and things, petrol stations etc - how much of a step back is Maps 3.0?????

Correct! (I'm not that angelic :-P) It's the same as people relying on Sat Nav to tell them exactly where to go and then turning into a ditch.

Back to the App, also has a nice Weather button in there.

Michelin guide just gave me the details of a nice restaurant nearby, inc avg menu meal prices, cooking type and what credit cards they accept!

Events just told me what was on at the cinema, not sure where it pulls the info from?

The lonely planets just loads a black screen though..anyone else having the same issues?

Zyyb wrote:The lonely planets just loads a black screen though..anyone else having the same issues?

It works for me, but displays info for nearest major touristy town (which is fine, as I live in the middle of nowhere, so not likely to be much Lonely Planet guide material.

I have to say that these additional services do add some value to the Maps. I can see myself using the guides when travelling on business.

Was having GPS location issues with Maps 3.1 (latest) and now have tried Ovi Maps 3.1 (beta).

Same problems....late coming up to intersections (lags by about 20-30 seconds) and occassionally "jumps" location to the middle of fields adjacent to the roadway--off by about 100 meters or more!!!

BTW...what is everyone seeing on the Vu-Meter for the GPS signal.

Mine shows about midscale...green bars mainly with one or two yellow bars.

My N97 is pretty nigh worthless as a GPS if it cannot do turn-by-turn BEFORE the turn!

Rats! I was really hoping that it might have helped sort out the lock issue. I also have it sitting mid scale and jumping off by at least 100m. The most frustrating part is it showing me driving the wrong direction on a road and updating me driving backwards and still not being able to work out it needs to turn the map around.

I've just switched back to my N96 until I get my replacement N97 to see if the antenna is any better on it.

John

I have to say that this update blew me away this morning. I'm so glad the text menus have all but gone and this thing is truly a killer app. I am really loving this! 😊

I was trying the Ovi Maps 3.1 beta on the drive home last night--still having many problems with "jumping" and "lagging".

The programmer in me started wondering...

Are the lags from just bad Maps software or could they be caused by other tasks running on the N97 preventing it from doing a proper timely update of the display?

Turning the homepage live widgets "offline" didn't really solve the problem.

Still wondering...

Could it be a display update issue?

Even offline, could the Accuweather and Facebook widgets be vying for the display routine processing (even in the background)?

What if....?

The program LOAD ORDER in the base processing stack has something to do with the timely functionality of the GPS display updates?

When my N97 was new, I seem to remember running the Maps software before the other "widgets". Maps 2.0 on v10 seems to work well back then.

Since I began doing resets (soft and hard), I pretty much have been loading the Maps software LAST.

Could it be that simple? Just changing the load order?

I wish there was a program like TaskSpy (on my Nokia 9300) which would tell me not just all of the running applications, but each and every thread, it's load order, priority and stack size.

I'm willing to venture a guess that these "live" widgets loaded first probably gobble up a lot of stack space and get their priority "hooks" in the OS.

I guess I'll have to experiment with this to see if that makes a difference.

or you just have a faulty gps mate

nokia are replacing a part on the back now which contains a gps antenna i suggest you send it back for repair if your having troubles

mine can get a 20-60m lock indoors and can hold a 7 - 17m lock outside whatever gps program i throw at it

Agreed, my lock isn't as good as that, but i do get one now, drove about yesterday using the new Beta maps and it stayed on track brilliantly.

The Nokia care point replaced my antenna AND my scratched lens in 2 and a half hours! They defintely replaced it as i marked the antenna sticker and the new one is clean!

I've since done Biggzys fix to the lens so it doesn't scratch again and might still try and improve the GPS with the copper wire fix, but i literally just tried it inside my office and Google maps locked on within about 30 seconds so i'll probably just wait till i get v12.

Faulty antenna design doesn't explain how my N97 out-of-the-box functioned very well in the original Maps 2.0 version with v10 firmware.

It has only been since the software updates and multiple reloads that I've had problems, all of which could be explained by software computational delays in the computations which could be caused by other programs. I've noted in other posts that while running some applications (like Bubbles) I would notice about a 5-10 second delay in screen updates periodically (i.e. there was evidence that the program had run its computations, but the screen update was lagging).

Still...it would be nice to get rid of the scratch on the lens.

NokiaUSA sent me instructions on how to file for an RMA number and ship my phone in. But since I have to take a trip this weekend, I will have to wait until next week.

how do I input a simple post code search ? and do I always have to go on line to do so ?

Thanks

Boothy

Can't comment on postcode search in the new beta, bu I suspect the search will always be online...

Leaves Nokia plenty of scope for "premium" content and sponsorship.

And licencing the postcode database is pretty expensive and I'd imagine even more so to embed it in devices... This way Nokia only have to buy it for use on their servers. On the plus side, it's alwasy up-to-date their way...

Hmm, changed my product code to euro and updated to v12 and my GPS didnt get enough strength to come on once on the 20 min journey home :-S

Dave, don't leave us in suspense!! Is it here yet?

He said 10AM delivery. So another 55 minutes to wait.

You lot have got less patience than me!

Right. It's here. I've swapped the product code to Euro 1. It's installing 12.0.24 as we speak.

It doesn't appear to be a refurb. The lens aint scratched yet. I'll try the gps in a bit too...

D

Right. I drove back from Peterborough to sunny Weston-super-Mare today using both my Navman standalone and my N97 with the latest Maps beta.

Maps did well. Was within about 100 feet of the Navman all the way back.

The navigation was a bit iffy, but I take an obscure route back and the Navman has sliders for speed vs distance & motorway preference... whereas the N97 has fast or quick or optimised.

Maps crashed a couple of times, but it's beta, so that's cool.

My only complaint is that it counts down the distance to your exit from roundabouts rather than distance to entering the roundabout. which is a little bit odd I reckon. But again, it's only a beta.

Overall, I think it's pretty fab. A massive improvement on the previous version...
