why is AAS at fault when Nokia releases a firmware? bitter much?
please just don't visit AAS if it pisses you that much. Good day. 😊

Well I've figured out so far...it's always been roughly 2 weeks after AAS's announcement when the firmware is available for Asia Pacific countries' product codes. Will keep checking anyway 😊

it doesn't work
and has never worked

even know its stuck to that, i've even purposely bricked my 5800 twice, and reflashed it and unless it has its precious v21 on there it doesn't even work

so boo Nokia hiss

It does work, it has always worked. It is the only reason I am up to V31. You just need to be capable.

I'm also the proud owner of a UK 5800 so am still stuck on V21. But have never heard of this 'change the code' idea. Can someone point me in the right direction ?

It's a bit like when the politicians promise to pour millions into a popular project, like education or health, and it gets loads of publicity, but six months later the money gets cancelled with no fanfare at all. I feel AAS should get into the habit of announcing firmware upgrades "for some product codes", otherwise they're complicit in the con-trick.

Right, and a quick dig around for "JAF PKEY Emulator", as suggested, reveals that Mr Public will need to fart around with torrents, which I don't touch with a barge pole; RAR compression, which isn't exactly run-of-the-mill; and the risk of trojans on his PC and bricking his phone.

You really think the average 5800 owner is going to prat around like that?

What a drama queen.

I didn't need to do any of that torrent stuff. The run of the mill app Winzip extracts .rar if you need to do it. Run a proper anti-virus tool on the PC, although it's unlikely to be needed, and you would have to be very clumsy and unable to follow basic instructions to brick the phone.

Is it really so hard? If it is, then take it into a Nokia service shop and ask them to do it.

And tomorrows lesson will be HelloOX2 Symbian hack tool. Also very straightforward.

It's not difficult, but care is needed to avoid bricking.

I changed my code yesterday from Vodafone branded UK to Generic Euro 1 Blue and 31 is not available OTA.

Apart from changing the code, do I need to do anything else? or should it just now work?

But I always put in a disclaimer along those lines in the story. In this case, I used "for many worldwide product codes" - I guess we're going to split hairs over how many is 'many'? 8-)

To get it to work for me, I had to change the code. Connect to Nokia Updater, then re-install the currently firware. When this is done check again and the new firmware over the air should be available.

The reason why the mega-operator variants take longer to update is simply the fact that these operators insist on testing each firmware before it goes to their customers. Testing is a limited resource so once new FW is ready from Nokia (or any manufacturer), it goes to the back of the queue. The length of the queue is determined based on how many devices and upgrades are available at a given time. There isn't a whole lot a device manufacturer can do about this.

If you don't like to be nanny-pampered this way, buy SIM-free.

if anybody is on uk contract and needs help changing their product code to be able to download this v31 update

and i will provide simple instructions that takes 5 minutes

Nokia UK shop has 5530XM for 235, and the 5800 cheaper at 229.

That's why I unbranded mine from SFR to Euro 2. SFR still only offers 11.X ....

My generic Nokia UK handset bought in March from the Nokia store on Regent street has upgraded fine to v31. I've also happily debranded 2 friends handsets (both on Vodafone) using NSS.

Where on previous software versions my Google Maps crashed after only a few seconds on 3G, I found that on this update the application keeps running. Maybe has something to do with the extra RAM being available

Don't know. I've never had Google Maps crash on my 5800. But I don't have too many apps in the background. 😊 I've had GMaps run for long periods of time while driving, though... Hours in a row.
