Is it worth upgrading to V12 firmware?

16 replies · 4,320 views · Started 24 September 2009

Got my N97 today and it has V11 firmware on it.

Is there any advantage in me upgrading to V12?

Also, is there an internet radio app for this phone?

I used that app frequently on my N95.

If version 12 is available to your N97, then yes it's a good idea to update, as it's got some bug fixes and generally better stability. If you need to change product code, and invalidate your warranty just to get version 12, then I'd probably say to wait.

I've got a Vodafone one too, so am going to wait.... for the time being.

If we knew when V20 was coming out, we'd be very popular.

Nokia say october, but I don't think the odds are very good for Vodafone getting it anytime this year.....🙄

Well, I think as soon as it is released I will debrand if I must and upgrade.

I have done it several times with my N95.

Have you managed to get Accuweather to give a weather forecast?

I have entered my home town and it is recognized, but it just then says Loading.........

I have left it like this for over an hour and it doesn't update or show anything.

Is this a known problem?

For me there is no official V12 available yet. However, I spoke to Nokia about my GPS reception problem and the fact that loading a higher firmware did not seem to fix the problem (according to 'some forums'😉 I asked them to either replace my N97 with a working version, or replace the GPS antenna with a working version.

Eventually a person from the TechTeam called me back and recommended to upgrade to V12, where Nokia would make a note that changing the product code on my phone was done legally by the Service Point so my phone would still be within the warranty policy. I explained him that a lot of people reported that migrating to V12 did not solve the problem for them. The tech person then explained me that flashing the firmware by a Service Point has a different impact on the phone than using NSU at home, as the SP flash would really clear out everything whereas the 'home-flash' could still leave some mess in the file system (as it would only 'upgrade' an existing phone, with the risk that driver problems or anything similar would still remain).

Though I am not really confident that it would actually fix my problem (however I really really hope so), the story does sound plausible. On the other hand, being quite a technical person myself, I know that a software upgrade to the latest version is ALWAYS suggested first.

I am therefore VERY curious who had the GPS problem on V10/V11 and had a Nokia Care Point flash the phone to V12. Are there any folks out there who have seen the GPS problem fixed by a Care Point software update??

In general, I do think that upgrading the firmware is a good thing, as mainly the V20 and onward firmwares from Nokia start to make real sense in stability and functionality as at that point the system becomes more mature...

Even if you do an NSU update you can hard reset your phone and get back a vanilla n97, but since they've said they would update and clear everything, just gotta wait and see if it works (which we all know it won't) 😉

I hope you got it in writing that they are sanctioning your product code change. I wouldn't trust them with a bargepole without a written consent, lost, found, subject to public enquiry and finally recycled as a fire lighter.

Ahem - thanks to Douglas Adams for my outburst. 😃

I first got my phone upgraded to V12 by the service centre in order to fix my GPS issues. This didn't help, and the second time I sent to my phone they exchange the back panel assembly (the part containing the GPS antenna sticker). That cleared most of the issues, but I am still having problems when my charging cable is plugged in (which it often is for navigation). I have requested a replacement phone from my store.

YAY!! V12 finally released for Vodafone in the UK 😊

Product code: 0585262

Just updating now so hope it sorts my phone out, probably not everything or they wouldn't be releasing V20 lol

Still no update for 0585162 😞

Anyone know what this code is? Got it with a UK Vodafone contract, but it's unbranded. Thought the update might be out with the Vodafone one.

Thanks

OK, seems I got excited over nothing!! I kept trying to update my firmware, but software updater kept saying it had a firewall problem, and couldn't talk to nokia, even though it connected to tell me there was new firmware!! weird!!

so I thought I would try again today, and now there is no V12 firmware available.

No, because I have already updated to the new v3 (I think) beta maps.

I think it was v2, but not sure.
