Weird problem

For the past days my N97 has trained its battery extremely fast, lasting less than a day. I checked the phone several times, its running applications, etc, and finally I figured out that the GPS seemed to be running much of the time. I'd doublecheck, and I had no GPS applications running.

Further investigation revealed that this only occurred when the phone wires situated in my belt clip case, never in any other pocket. The case has two strong magnets that hold it closed and allows easy opening.

My only conclusion is that the magnetic field in some way influences the GPS circuitry, like affecting a relay switch (although I suspect there are no old-fashioned electromechanical relays in this system).

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

As with most of the things I read, I forget where I read them, might have been here but someone mentioned they were looking for a belt pouch for their phone that specifically didnt have a magnetic latch. They mentioned their phone was doing something on its own like unlocking, if I remeember correctly, when the phone was slid into or pulled out of the case.

It is a good idea to keep your N97 away from magnets of any sort.

It can cause problems with the camera activating among other things.

There is another cause of a quick battery drain....in the US (currently in parts of Florida) AT&T is making changes in their 3G system which is causing certain Nokia 3G phones to spontaneously reboot and increase battery drain (hunting for signals....so transmitting a lot more than it should be).

Thanks, but I live in Norway and I even turned off 3G to rule out such problems.

I'm thinking of ordering a new case, which would you recommend? I was looking at the aluminium leather case from Proporta...

I've got a belt case like that, and it was driving me mad because it kept on unlocking itself for no reason. I then sussed out it was the magnets in the case, so I cut them out. I just tuck the flap in the case now to stop the phone from falling out. Just as effective IMO.
