I've had my N97 (black unlocked version) on Vodafone for just over a week and I am very disappointed. I have several issues:
1. Web browser - I keep receiving 403 error when using the web browser.
2. Podcasting - update rarely works I get an exclamation by each one and when it does work downloading is very slow when using Vodafone GPRS
3. Nokia Maps - when searching I get 'No results'
4, Widgets - don't always update giving errors.
5. Signal Strength - Unstable - It goes from full bars to 2.
6. Email Setup - I randomly get this screen asking 'Allow application to use network to send or receive data'
These problems can sometimes be fixed by rebooting the phone. I've updated the firmware to v.12.2.024 but it makes no difference. I've also set my wifi network the top prority in Destinations and Vodafone GPRS with 2nd prority. Podcasting, widgets, Maps all set to use Vodafone GPRS.
Also to check that it wasn't a Vodafone issue I put my SIM into my N95 and everything works perfectly. Anyone please help its getting really frustrating. I'm hoping that v.20 firmware is going rectify all these faults.
Many thanks!
1. Not sure about that error, only time i've had a problem with it, clearing the cache seemed to help, if not, maybe try opera mini, seems pretty good
2. Not had a single problem with podcasting, mine always updates and speed isnt an issue as it does it when it recognises a new one, so it's there when you reopen the app.
3. What are you searching for? Maybe try the new Ovi maps?
4. which widgets are giving you problems?
5. Signal strength is not a widely reported problem for this phone as far as i'm aware? seeings you can only get GPRS, are you sure it's not your area?
6. Click yes, always allow. it's asking to retrieve e-mails, it's not random.
Thanks for replying.
1. Searched on several forums. The 403 error is widespread on Vodafone and it looks like a network issue.
2. No idea why Podcasting isn't working properly.
3. I'm using Ovi Maps
4. AP News and Bloomberg
5. I have the 3.5G icon in the top left hand corner of the screen.
6. Its not asking to check emails - its Email Setup. I don't know why that wizard keeps running randomly.
Sometimes if you connect/disconnect the USB while the N97 was doing something important and it didn't get to finish what it was doing, some things can be left in an indeterminate state.
When this happens the best thing to do is....REBOOT.
When it comes back up, LET IT FINISH everything it is doing before you try to do anything else (i.e. don't interrupt it!).
Read the documentation about how to properly connect and disconnect your N97 from your computer. It will save a lot of grief.
Mine has always been ok on GPRS. Not really noticed any problems, apart from it being obviously slow.
If I were you, I'd just back up your messages, calendar and any photo's etc, then do a hard reset (*#7370#)

Daft question but have you downloaded (free) the map for your country using Nokia Map Loader?
With v.20 firmware hopefully days away I think I'll wait until its release and do a hard reset then.
