Hi Folks
I have have only had my P800 a week or so, I've loaded lots of applications (Opera, File Manager, Handyday and Safe etc) and am very happy with it overall but...
Has anyone come across the following problem with Contacts?
After initially syncing my old psion to outlook and then to the P800 I had been using contacts fine for a week and then all of a sudden (I don't think I loaded anything or did anything different) whenever I try to open Contacts I get a blank view for about one second (with the alphabetical tabs along the bottom but no contacts shown) and then a small information pop up appears on the lower half of the screen with 'Not enough Memory' ?
I find this hard to believe as I have 5.6Mb free on my C drive. My Contacts.cdb file (in system/data which I think is the main contacts file?) is 100724 bytes/kb? It probably has 500-600 entries with only one photo attachment and no ring tones.
The weird thing is when I create an SMS or other message I can access the contacts in those applications, just not through Contacts itself!
Any clues on this would be greatly appreciated because as you can imagine my phone is severly lacking with no phone book!
Thanks in advance
Jago
I think it means RAM memory, not storage memory.
How many apps do you have running at once? Use filemanager to check the task list and close down any apps that you do not need to be running, this may fix the prob.
I check what tasks I have running each day to free up sys memory.
Thanks Skunk,
I've checked my open apps (I'm only too concious of running memory after my 8mb Revo!) - Even when I close down all that can be closed (phone etc can't be closed) Contacts still won't open.
I've also had a Sim update sms from Orange but that didn't do the trick either!
Any other ideas?
cheers

Just an idea,,,
Would a hard reset fix this?
How is it done?
(Obviously a last resort to avoid re-loading everything)

Is file manager a third party application?
Is file manager a third party application?
yeah - I've forgotten the exact name - something like qfilemgr but basically a small freeware app that you can use like file explorer to more, cut copy delete etc files and it also has a task manager built in.

I had the same problem 2 times this week ,,, my contacts disappeared when i try to open contacts, when i checked the contacts file i found it became very small (about 7kb) that means all contacts had been erased & i had to restore them again from backup file .. anyone have the same problem ?
I have had the same problem. I tried turning it off and removing the battery to no avail. So I used the synch operation and that reset it. A few days later the same thing happended so I did a master reboot. But remember if you do the master reboot it will delete anything you have loaded. I have now reloaded all other software on the 64 ms duo that I bought. Good luck.
yep, me to.
tried closing down progs etc...
only thing that works is a reset but i cant do that everytime i want to find a contact !
Lesson learned: Always make a backup as often as you can 😊 I make backups every night and sometime in the morning too 😊 Its routine, comes after I brush my teeth, and just before going to sleep 😊
Oh well after a new phone from Orange and several technical support calls I still can't solve it!
The only way forward I can see is a master resest and then reloading everything, but after using the pone for a month I don't want to loose all my emails, internet accounts and general set up! (I can't doa restore as that restores the problem contacts files!)
I wouldn't mind creating my contacts from scratch (or re-synching them to outlook) but I can't delete the original caontacts file. When I try to delete it on file manager (either on the P800 or using the PC based version) it says file in use andwon't delete it
Any (last) ideas GREATLY appreciated 😞
Cheers

By the way how many contacts o you have?
That's the problem - I only have about 600 entries at most (with only one photo) attachment so it's not huge :-?
I've logged yet another call with Orange to see how I can delete the Contacdts.cdb file - but i don't hold much hope 😞
Does anyone know what the agenda file is called and where it's stored?
I could then try to copy that, do a master reset and then copy the agenda back - at least I wouldn't loose all my upcoming appointments?
Cheers

Here is a not very safe idea.
Make a backup. Then find the contacts.cdb file on the pc and delete it.Do a master reset.
Then restore the data.
Or,find a way to turn off the phone aplication,is there a way to start the phone without sim, something like flight mode.
BTW:i'm only saying this from my expirience with Series 60 devices like the 7650.
I dont know if this will work on the p800.
I think that the backup, delete, master reset, restore should work.
Thanks Ghostdog
The only trouoble is unlike the Psiwin connection (and I presume the Nokia backup software) the Sonyercisson backup compresses all the files on the P800 into one file on the PC and doesn't show the folder and file structure on the PC backup!
So unless anyone knows otherwise I don't think you can delete individual files on the PC and then do a restore ? 😞
Is there a way to start the p800 without simcard?
No -when I take the sim card out and switch on the phone it locks it and says insert sim.
Can't delete the contacts file or shut down phone app in 'Flight mode' either 😞

Yeah, if you just rename the backup file to <filename>.zip, you can then open it up and see all the files in there. You should be able to remove the offending file (contacts.cdb) from there.
Now, whether this will mess up the restore or not, I'm not willing to have a go and find out for you 😊
But, for the Contacts file, it should be okay. I would assume it would give you no contacts so that you can then just resynch and Bob's your Uncle!
Great! Thanks Bassey
I'll give it a go tonight and see how I get on 😃
Cheers

Well, good luck, end let us know what happened! 😃
Have you tried speaking to SE's helpline? they should know a lot more about the phone than Orange would.
Best of luck
Paul
AAArrrggghhh!
So close but no success - I changed the back up file to a zip file as Bassey suggested and opened it in winzip fine but I could not delete the file! There was an error from winzip saying that the file type was incorrect - it seems that the backup files can be viewed in winzip but not changed, unless I am missing a trick?
Bassey do you know how you can change/delete files from the backup file?
If not I think SE will be my last chance.
Thanks

Since it can be opened just like a normal Zip file, why not expand it to a folder then just delete the offending file normally as you would in windows, then Zip the remaining file again. Then try to restore this new Zip file up to your P800. It's worth a try. Let us know.
just remember to make a backup of your backup first. 😃
Not a bad idea Enterprise.....
I'll give it a go but I have a sneaky feeling that if winzip can't modify the SE backup file, and I do it manually outside winzip and then rezip everything I bet the SE restore won't read the new zip file to restore to the phone!
Worth a go though!
Mmm. I just took a backup, took a copy of it (safety first!), changed it to *.zip, opened in winzip and removed a file from it. It gave me an error saying there was some garbage at the end of the file, but allowed me to do it none the less - and no, I'm still not prepared to risk trying to restore it over my nice, stable P800 😊
Maybe when you tried it there was some kind of permission problem? Perhaps you could try moving the backup file to a general folder before fiddling with it? Check the access permissions are okay on that file?
Not sure Enterprise's suggestion would work. If you have a look at the file whilst opened in Winzip, it has a file structure within it. I'm not convinced this file structure would be maintained when re-zipping it and I'm sure the restore would fail if the file structure is wrong.
But still worth a go. Maybe if you create a share on the folder you are going to zip from, map a drive to the share and then zip it over the drive mapping that might fool it into maintaining the structure? Not sure.

My Contacts also is crashing and i get the same error, not enought mem. I have 9mb free for use on C: and 20MB storage free on D:
This seams to be a major bug, lets hope they fix it in next version.
What version do you have.. Mine is:
