Contacts Problem - 'Not Enough Memory'!

48 replies · 11,620 views · Started 12 March 2003

To fix your contact's:

Backup internal drive C:

Rename the backup file to *.zip

Then UNZIP the file to a dir..

Replace the contact.cdb With last working backup. put it in system\data dir on internal.

zip the file exacly like it was and restore the internal drive.

Volla, the phone is back up. Just remember to backup the phone when ever you do changes in your Contacts.
Not a bad idea Enterprise.....

I'll give it a go but I have a sneaky feeling that if winzip can't modify the SE backup file, and I do it manually outside winzip and then rezip everything I bet the SE restore won't read the new zip file to restore to the phone!

Worth a go though!
haven't heard from you... how did it go... are you still encountering same problem or has it been already fixed, if so, kindly share your solution to us 😉

Tommen/Enterprise

Still no joy 😞

When I try to modify the backup file, I rename it with a zip extension in windoes explorer in a different folder to the backup folder (following Bassey's suggestion).

But when I try to delete or modify the contacts.cdb file winzip has a problem with the file type and reads the file as backupfile.zip.ecs (I'm typing this from memory -is ecs the backup extension?)

So winzip still sees the file as an ecs file rather than a true zip - am I renaming it wrong?
It's a bit frustrating that Bassey, Tommen and others can fix this with winzip but I can't :-?

I've got a call outstanding with SE but they haven't come back to me yet after 3 days.

(BTW: My phone versions are: R1D, R2C, R1F01 & R2A02)

Cheers for the help and suggestions though - much appreciated 😊

Sounds suspiciously like a major MAJOR gripe of mine with the newer versions of windows (and another reason I didn't want to upgrade but was forced to by the P800). By default, Win98 and above hide file extensions from you.

Unless you go into your windows options and say that you want to display all file extensions it won't do it. So, you are renaming the file from (for example)

mybackup1

to

mybackup1.zip

But the file was not called "mybackup1". It was called "mybackup1.ecs" and windows was hiding the file extension from you. So, you have actually renamed it to "mybackup1.zip.ecs".

The answer is (from memory) to open up MyComputer, go to the View menu and select options. Somewhere in there is an option to display all file extensions.

Alternatively, if you know how to use DOS, use that to rename the file instead.

And yes, I am an old git who wishes we all still used DOS or UNIX and that Windows had never been invented 😊

the option is actually found in:

mycomputer -> tool -> folder options -> (tab) view -> then unselect the "Hide file extensions for known file types"

Excellent - thanks guys!

Can't wait till I get home to my PC and try it - hopefully I'll have a fully functional P800 by tomorow

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

When you re-zipped your files up did you just click on the top level folder and create a new zip? If so what compression rate did you use - normal or maximum etc? Did you use the existing zip file? (the original backup you changed to '.zip'😉

As you can guess I tried this last night - changed the backup to a zip, I still couldn't delete contacts.cdb directly in the zip so extracted all files and deleted it. Created a new zip with exactly the same name as the original back up and then - the SE restore wouldn't recognise it and wouldn't restore the P800! :x

Bassey - you must have been right about some file structure in the original backup! How did you do it Tommen?

Cheers -
A frustrated Jago!

Jago,

I noticed in Tommen's post, he said that he actually replaced the CONTACTS.CDB from a last working backup, instead of just deleting it.
Maybe you should do the same.

Wishing you fast resolution.

At this rate, I think you would have been better off setting everything up again from scratch!

I would have thought the restore works by unzipping the backup file into the C: drive of the P800. If it dos this, the zip archive needs to have bee built using the exact same file structure as the P800, relative to C:.

How you could acheive this manually I don't know.

There MUST be a way for you to replace the file within the original zip archive. I can open the archive, select a single file, Click the extract button to extract it (accepting the default location), replace it with a file of the same name and then add it back in (using the "Add" button in winzip) and everything works fine and it maintains the same archive path as the original had.

Anyways, good luck!

Hi

When i rezip the file i used the standar settings in winzip. I also used the newes version just downloaded.

You backup/restore program do not accsept the file after you zip it.. That is if you try to import it. This is why it's so important to use the same name, or you will not sucess.

Also i had to reset the phone to sucsess. With out reset i got backup failure msg.

So i backed up internal drive c: unzipped the backup, then i replaced the file contact, zipped it back exaclty as it was.. This is also WERY important so the file gets exepted.

Then after reset of phone i restored it. Didnt loose anything but voise control. All sent sms mms email etc intact.

Tom

thanks for the advice on fixing the problem...

but what is causing it in the first place - and importantly i there anything i should do to reduce the chance of it happening again....

at first i thought it was cos i had too many pictures attached to my contacts but I guess it is more like instability in the firmware? (mine still R1D)

I have had the same flaky contacts problem and have even failed to manage a master reset = that I am fully ptrepared to do - where do you get your lock code from?

Also the phone has stopped connecting ti o the Web and despite showing a connection no data flows so no emails either - I like this device only when it works!

Paul

Pmayer

Try 1111 or 0000 for you unlock code - they are often the defaults depending on what operator you are with. DO NOT TRY THE WRONG CODE more than 3 times though as yout phone will be locked.

cheers
Jago

Cheers for the tip 0000 did the trick - less errors now - still not consistent intrernet and email - but Orange reckon that they have a few GPRS sites down!!!

i've been tearing my ears off too with this prob. tried everything but to know joy.
just got phone upgraded to r2f and trans'd over my contacts from sim and a-ok so far.
maybe your only op.
keep ya posted

I am in Croatia so I don't have a clue what is Orange. Problem is still the same. It was working just fine, I wasn't adding anything, I clean up runningApps, have lots of free space ... then one murning 'out of blue' contacts won't load because of "not enough memory".
It was working yesterday so I guess it is really OS issue (or P800 major bug).

I would like to resolve it too. Did anyone fing solution since last posts here?

I've changed the content of a small text file in a backup, namely "cda_version.txt" but the Restore has said the backup file to be illegal.

So I'd like to know what you mean about zipped it back exaclty as it was.. ? I've used the same name for the backup file...
