V20 is here - But is it any good

Well, sitting here very cheesed off,and am dead envious of all you lucky people who now have v20,so hope it brings you the improvements you wanted.

I had downloaded 138mb of the 140 of v20 when my NSU decided it didn't want to play anymore and that now would be a great time to crash.

Tried several times since, but now it won't even start the download. Looks like I'll be with my N95 a little longer!

zxon wrote:Let me answer this question by telling you something that I found out when I phoned up my nearest Nokia Service Point to book in for my N97's lens and GPS to be sorted out. The fellah took some details, including my IMEI number. When he put it on his computer, probably to confirm that my N97 was an unbranded UK model, he was able to tell me that I'd updated to v12 using NSU.

I'd imagine whomever VF send their phones off to to be repaired, Nokia I'd imagine, could learn the same thing and determine from this that you've changed your product code at one point and invalidated the warranty.

This is the only reason why I'm not changing my product number. I want my warranty to be valid in case anything goes wrong.

Thanks for the response! Looks like i'll be waiting for V20 from voda....hope its not too long!

I really like this update.
First of all, the phone feels like it had it's processor updated as well.
Everything is very fast now.

My GPS wasn't that bad before this update, but now I got a correct lock in 10-15 seconds, just as good as my TomTom.

Kinetic scrolling <3

Music player: It's getting there. Something still doesn't feel quite right, but it's getting there. (Btw Celios, you can get to the music library from the left button).
Going to music from the home screen -> back button -> home screen
Going to music from application -> back button -> back to library
Took the phone almost 2 hours to import/read 30 gig of music (5000 songs)

For me, who have a scandinavian keyboard with // hidden under the shift keys, the adjustments are now perfect (long press is enough)

Just completed my RM-507 v20 firmware upgrade.

Little faster...

Kinetic scrolling in contacts and app menu (about time). I don't like the little "rebound" effect when it hits the extremes of scrolling though!

Screen transitions? Other than the home screen swipe-on/swipe-off effect I don't see anything new.

I do like the scrubber bar in contacts now showing the first letter of the last name and snapping to the first in the letter series. That allows you to get to a person a little faster than before.

Now to load back my 41 apps, reconfigure/re-register them and then load my 4 GB of music and 1 GB of videos and the 2.5 GB of documents/pictures/books!

i think he'll be picking himself up a dvd at the same time 😃

Haha, i was bloody cooking roast chicken and debranding at the same time....stressful

I posted this comment in another thread but it is relevant here...

Since the v20 upgrade I have lost a significant amount of C: drive memory.

I am now down to less than 4 MB!!!

Tomorrow is a day-off from work, so I plan on doing a hard reset and installing everything from scratch to try and get my C: drive back to the 40 MB that I had prior to the reflashing that the NokiaCare center did (they installed the factory v12 distro including the games and bloatware). When my N97 came back, it was at 20 MB free on C:, then after the v20 firmware upgrade I'm now down to 4 MB.

I thought v20 was supposed to be more memory efficient?

Mine has been fine. Glad I dont have to press the function button for each number just press and hold. That makes things so much easier. Hasn't crashed or needed a reset yet. Seems more responsive too. Every little bit helps.

I think this may still be my last Nokia device though. Or at least any Nokia Symbian based phone.

Was about to say that, makes typing a lot quicker and easier, especially when putting passwords in etc!

Maybe hard reset was not a good idea, the update to ovi has fixed the scrolling but ive no facebook, weather, ngage and updated maps program. i thought they were preinstalled,in fact the only widget is vlingo. At least nokia messaging is installed

Yep, me too, the only things i've got are
Joikuspot
Boingo
qik
Vlingo

Nothing Else!

Well, I just tried the video recording feature on my N97 which with previous firmwares functioned very poorly when zooming as it stuttered and stepped and just looked fecking awful.

And guess what?

It's still shit.

FFS, Nokia. Seriously. I'd have taken one up the poop shoot for you guys until got my N97. Now, with a GPS that sucks, a camera zoom that stutters more than Arkwright and the numerous other niggles, I'd as soon rip your face off than let you come anywhere near me with another Nokia device. I mean, I even, for one brief moment, thought I should have gone with an iPhone. FFS!!!

So, now I am lumbered with a flaky handset, that doesn't do the stuff it should or doesn't do it well enough, for two more years. Well, I'm not going to take it.

I will be contacting every consumer group that I can in a bid to rid myself of this P.O.S. at no further cost to myself.

My N95 is a far more competent device. How could Nokia have taken such a retrograde?

Hi
I have two rss feeds on my home screen set to update every 4 hours, since updating to v20 they don't update anymore.

Anyone else have this issue?

Well, I'm not really pleased as I don't feel any improvement in ram management. Still hangs up sometimes, now more often than with v12, esp. when the player is running.

In the Browser check:

Options->Settings->Web feeds->Acc. point for auto-update

When I went from v10 to v11 this changed to "Auto Dial-in ISP" which made my updates non-functional.

i've installed MaU MAU from lonelycatgames but i can't register it since i can't enter numbers!!!! also how to exit from it without using the menu button? i'm missing my n95

Ta, thats sorted it. Should have thought of checking that

Thanks again

My thoughts on V20 so far...

User interface much improved - I now find navigating the menu systems much easier, and I really like being able to type numbers easily on the qwerty.

Stability wise I'm not so happy.

Last night I got home from work and could not get out of the music player. phone was totally Frozen. That time though it did come back to life after I just left the phone alone for a few minutes.

Then, earlier, I went to take a picture of a delicious chocolate and toffee sunday I was eating (was going to tease my collegue with it as he was in a boring working lunch ha ha 😃 ) and the camera just would not operate. The viewfinder came on, but non of the buttons worked. In the end, I had to take the battery off to get the phone working again.

This kind of problem is happening about once or twice a day I'd say.

My V20 update was done on top of a completely blank and freshly reset phone. I did do a restore once updated but ONLY contacts and calendar.

So, overall, I'm not that happy. The phone is still far from perfect.

Looking forward to the next update already :frown:

I must say faster repsonse after update and quicker lock on GPS but ya it freezes every now and then but oh well as I said earlier that that's it for nokia it's my last NOKIA after 15 years being with them i am deeply disappointed with this phone but i guess no choice for now but it will be going on flebay soon i can see that already 😡

I have a question for everyone. Now that we have v20 and can move the clock on the homescreen.... do any of you actually move it?

I tried and it just doesn't look right unless it's on the top.

BanziBarn wrote:You're quite right! I moved the clock but it looked wrong so I put it back.

Me too....

It went: - Wow I can move the clock. Cool. Gotta try that. (tried it) Urgh. That aint right. Moved it back 😉

I'd rather have multiple homescreens...

PAH ! Some of us are still looking foward to v20!!

I think I have discovered a new use for my v12 ( reboxed ) N97. Will keep you in suspense til I've tried it out....

Hi,

Nokia 'update' site shows V20 available for Product Code 0585162 (Voda N97)

Checked via NSU, and only V12 is shown 😞

So I guess that the Firmware is within Vodafone being fiddled with ?
