Wow, still no VOIP. STEVE!! can you PLEASE fix your summary, and while you are at it, give your friends at Nokia a kick in the bum for lying about this feature, and leaving this out.. again. I am incredibly unhappy with this, given I came from a real smartphone, the n95. This has been a step back, and one that will most likely result in me leaving the symbian world. I've been using Nokia phones for over 10 years now, and series 60 since the 6600, but man oh man, this is just rubbish. I wouldn't consider an iPhone, as any os without multitasking is a toy imo, but with Android around the corner, is this really the time to be REMOVING features from your devices?? Coming soon to ebay.. one used white piece of junk pretending to be a flagship phone. May contain traces of nuts.
The Nokia N97 gets v20 and a new lease of life
I lost my roadsync installation and Dataviz does not seem to allow to download the product anymore.
Hope that is just by accident and not to increase the revenues
Was able to recover to roadsync installation. Went to the Roadviz website and downloaded a free trial. Was able to install the trial as a normal version with the credentials I had
I took my bricked n97 down to nokia care, and they told me "how did you get version 20 firmware on it, our system says the latest version is 12"
The curse of the early, early adopter.
So now, after waiting a month for this update, i have to wait for bloody nokia care to get the update!
just updated my unbranded Aussie N97 0576208 with no problems. Cheers for the heads up about the Ovi store issue, saves me whinging about that but has anyone else experienced the problem when in photos and you've selected a pic then when you select back it goes back to the Home Screen instead of the 'thumbnail' view of the pics?
Everything else so far seems good and running pretty quick and apart from a minor dissagreement with concrete I've no issues with the phone since I got it 4 months ago

Would you recomand to those who still haven't updated to v 2.0 to wait until the bugs are (hopefully) ironed out, or maybe to postpone indefinitely the upgrade because what we would get with v. 2.0 is even worse of what we got now?
Yes, I would recommend doing the upgrade. The disappointment is not because anything is worse than before. The disappointment is because the upgrade is simply not good enough for the high expectations in the renewed N97.
What about UPNP-AV-Streaming or Remote-Drive (Web-DAV)? Is it there?
Thanks

Delete thumbnails file (glxmdstn) which is in e:\private\101ffc31\.
I've had the same problem and that solved it.
Product management for the N97 really did a bad job. I remember the promotion video from the beginning advertising the style of the N97 and the effort being put into the nice sound when flipping it up. But the real experience screwed all up.
First we had all those problems with camera glass scratches, GPS antenna problems and the massive oversight regarding the size of the C drive. Then the unfinished firmware. And now v20 that unnecessarily does not fullfil it's promises.
I have been defending the N97 firmware from the beginning, because it has been created with high pressure trying to get out a competitive touch screen device. I have been waiting for v20 as the "real v1" firmware for the product.
I really wanted to recommend the N97 on v20 to my friends but:
- When trying Ovi Store the first disappointment: It does not work. No problem: They shipped an old client. Just update it from the web site.
- When trying E-Mail it does not do HTML. No problem: They just included the wrong client. Go to email.nokia.com (don't confuse with mail.ovi.com) and install Nokia Messaging. It's free. Sort of. At least during the test phase. :con?
- When trying internet telephony as I have showed my friends with my N95 more than two years ago: Sorry guys, not this time! 😡
- When trying to setup the internet connection in various applications: Yes the browser takes destinations. No, Nokia Messaging does not. Yes the settings are different for every application.
- When trying to connect the phone to Ovi services: Yes there is a unified log in for all services, but you have to set it up differently for every application. Nokia Messaging only allows to enter it at first startup (including connection problems after reinstalling a phone backup). Nokia Maps? Well, it depends on the version.
- Want N-Gage games? Go download the client from the web page.
- What's this "Download!" application for? Nobody knows.
- Want streaming internet radio? *sigh*
What's really bad: Those things would have been easy to resolve: Just make sure the latest software is available in the firmware. Check N95 functionality and make sure the N97 includes all of it. Streamline the settings experience in all applications.
What did you do, product management?
(Have not participated in Nokia bashing yet. Hope this long rant is still somewhat constructive.)
Update: It seems that VoIP is available in v20. More information in later comments.

Cheers mate for that info but figured it was time for a hard reset anyway. That fixed it too 😃
Does it fix the rattling lock key? Or the creaky back cover? Sold mine on eBay and will be the last Nokia I ever own. Much better phones out there... hello HTC Touch Pro 2 😊

I used Nokia Software Updater from my PC over USB. The update was not available when checking for updates on the phone. I was really surprised to see the update available on the first day via NSU!
I upgraded my N97 and didnt loose any data including
Ngage,apps,settings nad video/photos.
Kinetic scrooll is exellent.
I ve notice great improovmnet at galleries and at the zoom on pictures.
k.ewin wrote:I was really surprised to see the update available on the first day via NSU!
You appear to be quite lucky because the Nokia site still says v12 for both codes. Were you asked to update your NSU software 1st? This is what happened for me.
Yeah Ovi Suite does this for me...
Internal Error.
Device Could Not Be Detected.
If problem persists re-install Ovi Suite.
So no update.
What does NSU do?
Oh, same thing, except suggests I connect my phone via usb.
It is plugged in via USB.
And if another f**king idiot says try a different USB port, I will scream.
NSU AND OVI can't detect Laptop USBs.
The latest versions anyway.
So Nokia are f**king useless.
Wasting my time and money.
I will now be using the N97 as a doorstop for my incontinent dog.
And using the Omnia HD as my phone, telling everyong who walks past how
good it is and how stupid they are if they own a Nokia.
I hate Nokia. They can't do anything right. Ever.

Have you tried another USB port? :P
Seriously, PC Suite 7.1.30.9 works great for me with Windows 7, mebbe try install this version. One thing with NSU tho, I have to stop the firewall and ICS services before running it.
I know how you feel about Nokia right now. At least with some tinkering you can probably run NSU at some point. No amount of stuffing around is going to make the native voip software re-appear 😞

Not happy then?
This is the firmware the N97 should have had from the start. It works like a charm! I am so happy! It is amazing such a difference it is. The speed and the kinetic scrolling makes it a breeze.
The Ovi Store also works fine. I didn't have any problem with conflicting touch areas, as some mentioned.
The only thing that seems a little broken is the N-Gage client. Going through the list of available games is horrible, but I guess it is because Nokia stopped supporting the N-Gage client, which is a shame I think 😊
I've actually come to enjoy some of the N-Gage games, and they run great on the N97, and with the new firmware even without choking the rest of the system to death 😊
/Henrik...
This would be great if it ever will be released to danish mobiles, which they never will, and most software like JAF cant read my N97 so i am stuck with a bad firmware that never gets updated.
"I've just updated my UK SIM FREE WHITE N97 RM-505 0576350"
I'm not sure you have. It looks like you've got a EURO code there:
0576350: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 White
Lucky you!
My UK unbranded white N97 code is 0587240 (0587240: N97 UK CV W) and I'm still getting nada from NSU or FOTA...
So is it worth to download the new software or it's better to remain with v.1.2?
After all I have read I am tempted to saty with my old ROM.
Should I or should I not?
As said before, the new software is worth the download as it is much better than v12. The main complain is that there are still things missing such as VoIP, Internet Radio etc. So still not the full N95 functionality but better than v12.
Regarding the problem with Ovi Store, go to www.store.ovi.com on your N97 and install the new version. It's been updated to sort the scrolling issue and even better, to enable redownloading of previously download apps. Hooray!
I had to use JAF to install the firmware. NSU just refused to do it on Windows 7, Vista or XP Machines.
Btw, I got JAF working on Windows 7 using the compatibility mode. The serious lack of thought by Nokia to make things easy really makes me feel like going to Windows Mobile 6.5. Microsoft has a winner with Windows 7, I'm pretty sure they're going to step on everyone once Windows Phone 7 comes out!
Having said that, I want a Nokia N900! I'm just expecting the same old compatibility rubbish with Nokia. There was a time when everything was smooth as butter. They've overstretched themselves!
Nokia is pulling this update away from NSU. 😃 :icon14:
Found a regression bug that has been fixed in v12 and seems to be back again with v20:
When I leave WLAN coverage the phone switches to 3G. When returning it does not switch back to WLAN. The browser connects via 3G until I reboot.
Can anyone confirm?
"At least with some tinkering you can probably run NSU at some point. No

They sure are making it hard, but there is a way to enable the Nokia VOIP on the n97. Big big tks to techman29 over at the nokia discussions thread for finding it.
Basically, you just need to install SIP_VoIP_3_0_Settings_v1_0_en.sis (a file from forum nokia). Google it to get a download link. Install it (it will say it's not compatible, but continue), then you will have all the settings you need under net settings, and then some. It's actually really quite comprehensive, can even set codec order 😊
Note that you shouldn't install v2_0 of the above file, it doesn't work on n97, won't mess anything up, just wont work.
If you download from another source than Nokia, be sure to check the certificate when installing, and file size (should be about 71 k)
Seems that there is a way to enable VoIP on the N97. Here is a thread at Nokia discussions.
I have been investigating further in the VoIP issue.
The good news is:
The N97 does have VoIP implemented! 😃
The bad news is:
- It is so new that the documentation on Forum Nokia has not been updated yet. It is unclear what VoIP version is supported but I assume 3.1 or later.
- In order to configure it, you need either a configuration file/message from your VoIP operator or install an advanced VoIP settings application that allows on device configuration.
- The advanced settings tool for on device settings is not available yet for the N97. People are installing older releases meant for other phones sometimes successfully.
- I am not sure whether the Nokia VoIP client can still do VoIP calls through 3G as on the N95. Only WLAN is mentioned in more recent documentation.
At least this is great news and Nokia has fulfilled their promise of VoIP in the v20 firmware. 😎 I have to take back some of my criticism.
I would recommend waiting until the documentation and tools section at Forum Nokia is updated to reflect the N97 v20 firmware release.
