The Nokia N97 gets v20 and a new lease of life

I also had issues with the update of my N86. This OVI Store client shipped with the firware V20 was 1.05(272). I went on the ovi store with the web browser and downloaded it again, this time it was 1.05(315) and it works better. Maybe there is the same problem with the N97.

Just a FYI myself and many others did not get the latest version of Ovi Maps with our firmware update. We are all still running v. 3.01 which is what was already installed on the device. You might want to check to make sure that the Maps update is actually included in the firmware release.

Regards,

I have issues with th Ovi store since the update. I am unabel to scroll down on any screen as the moment I touch the screen the item under my finger is selected and I cannot scroll down.

Anyone else having this issue?

After upgrading to 20.0.019.C01.01 (RM-505, unlocked swedish phone) maps is not 3.1 as you state, it is v3.01 09wk38b02

Before the v20 upgrade i had the orignial from previous version maps, so it was an upgrade but only to 3.01

Not that it matters on this phone, since it hardly ever can get a GPS fix anyhow...

Also the N-Gage client was not included in my v20 update. Needed a seperate download. And software updated recommended a Ovi Contacts update. I guess those are not the reason for free space on drive C.

After installing all upgrades and the full version of Quickoffice I still have about 38 MB free space on C.

I wonder whether Nokia Messaging will move it's e-mail storage to E: any time soon.

had the same problem with ovi store. got the latest version, now it works

"a mountain of smaller fixes" - LOL - I guess Steve's definition of "mountain" is different from everybody else's. It's this kind of poor fanboyish reporting that is disappointing.

I thought I'd dust off my poor N97 to see if the new firmware could breath some new life into it. Turns out nothing will spare the N97 from the oblivion.

I don't know where to start with my litany of blunders that is the N97. For now I only have one question: where the devil is VOIP ?

Nasty bug in the music player - the "Back" button shown when a track is in play now takes you back to the home screen, meaning there is no way to go back to the track list and select another track quickly.

One step forward, two steps back.

1 new widget, VOIP missing in action and bugs with Ovi and Music player. Did it take them 4 months to add kinetic scrolling? 😮

I define a 'mountain' in this context as over 10 and less than 50. OK now? I'm sure the full, grittier changelog will appear leaked online in due course, and you can see for yourself.

BTW, for Ovi Maps and N-Gage, I was working from the RDA N97 v20 - it's possible that these aren't in the actual *distributed* firmware image - apologies if that's the case - I'm only just now (Tuesday evening) been able to get to my PC and start the update procedure on a local device.

Download new v1.05 app from store.ovi.com and that one works fine.

At long last something that greatly missing in the US. Letters on the dial pad that allow us to dial numbers containing letters.

That's fair enough. My N97 feels somewhat snappier. The kinetic scrolling is nice I just don't see anything else significant. Ram is still low.

Steve, could you please update the original post:

  • Firmware is 20.0.019 not 20.2.019

  • VoIP is missing

  • N-Gage client is not included

  • Ovi Store client, Ovi Contacts etc. need updates

  • Accuweather widget seems to be missing, I had to download it from Ovi Store

  • Ovi Maps is not the latest 3.03 from beta labs

BTW I could not start Ovi Maps after upgrade. I decided to try 3.03 and it's working and very nice!

Update: It seems that VoIP is available in v20. More information in later comments.

nokia plzz dont forget about 5800. we all flocked to get ur first S60 5th Edition with all its bugs etc. and this is how you treat us? We Want Kinetic Scrolling Too!

My music player does not have the problem mentioned with the Back button.
My FW version is 20.2.019 with N97 NAM RM-507. I think it changes between EURO/NAM version.

Nokia have given updates to firmware v31 on the 5800 and it's a damn good phone now but effectively complete. It will never get an update with kinetic scrolling in the OS, although apps such as profimail for S60V5 have implemented their own kinetic scrolling.

Guys, where I can find the newest List of devices the update is available for as of today, as it was posted for an example:

RM-505
20.0.19:

0576124: RM-505_APAC_AUSTRALIA Black
0591376: RM-505_APAC_AUSTRALIA Black
0576208: RM-505_APAC_AUSTRALIA White
0591377: RM-505_APAC_AUSTRALIA White
0576129: RM-505_APAC_Bangladesh Black
0576211: RM-505_APAC_Bangladesh White

thanks!

Before if you touched the screen with a swiping movement it was interpreted as a scroll - not any more...

Only way to use it is by opening the keyboard and using d-pad 😞

ok, that because your ovi store is outdated
just go to downloads to fix this problem

Been anxiously waiting for this one!

I did run into some issues when updating, I left it to update, but towards the end Software Update reported it had lost connection to the device and that I had to reconnect, and then it failed completely with an 'Internal Error' or something. I don't know if this was to do with my phone or me using Windows 7, it seemed to be linked with Windows 7 trying to install the device drivers several times during the update, interrupting the phone.

Anyway, once I got this error, I pulled the battery, did a Hard Reset of the phone (http://mynokiablog.com/2009/07/18/how-to-hard-reset-your-nokia-n97/) and the update reported it was finished onscreen and ready to use! All seems good now!

please note there are no problems with the ovi store
you just need to update the software. its using v1.0 and not 1.5

What I find strange is that we were promised several news apps and Widgets, but can't see anything new other than Vlingo.

UK based SIM free N97 updated

Only issue is the map data needs updating...
Licence needs updating...
and when you try to re-load map data via ovi-suite [USB] you get an internal unknown error.

nice, glad have got another N97 as backup.

makes an expensive paper weight.

Thanks for getting my hopes up. Have an unbranded white N97 UK variant (variant in that it's identical to the EURO model but with a sticker on the back that says "Nokia - please kick me"...)

30 minutes of backing up my settings (how on earth it can take this long is beyond me) after Ovi Suite told me I wasn't using the correct cable (um - it's the one that came in the box with NOKIA written all over it...) and several in-out-in-out-in-outs until the N97 was recognised and I get...

wait for it...

"Your device is up to date".

OOOOFFFF!!!

And now I read that Mr Litchfield is basing his article on NGage and Maps on the RDA version.

If he can get v20 on his unbranded N97, I would like to know why I can't.

Equally, if he can't, please can he add his name to the list of people feeling incredibly let down by Nokia in terms of the way they treat their UK customers.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions:

1) The N97 isn't anywhere near as bad as the haters make out. When it works, it's the best phone I've ever owned.

2) The vids I've seen of v20 make it look as tasty as it should have been in the first place if it wasn't rushed to market. And if SHIFT_FN brings COPY/PASTE back to the keyboard - woohoo!

but...

3) Nokia's blatant disregard for early adopters such as myself who went out of their way to pick up an unbranded handset to avoid the rigmarole that I went through with a branded N95 is a disgrace.

Especially when "early adopter" in this case means buying a phone with bugs that still aren't fixed 4 months down the line, being promising widgets galore and getting pretty much sweet FA bar a Facebook widget that gets "internal errors" and requires a phone restart and a photo album app that continually f#cks it's own database meaning that on a phone with 500 photos it has the gall to tell me I've taken none. Thank @%# I'm Symbian savvy and have downloaded the PhotoBrowser app or I'd be thinking that my 500 would have been better spent on a holiday and a 2nd hand 6230... Actually, come to think of it...

Experienced the following on firmware v1 & v2: connecting bluetooth headset during an active call drops the call. Same headset works fine on N95-3. anyone else experiencing this?

I have been waiting for this update too but even if I have an unbranded scandinavian phone when I try to update I get the message that there are no updates for me.

Now however, after reading the comments of other N97 users who have updated to v. 2.0 , NOT ONE of which is statisfied with the updated version, I wonder if it would'nt be better to stay with my v. 1.2, which at least is working.

I surely don't want to update to get even more troubles from this piece of cXXp.
Besides I have just downloaded Vlingo from OVI (I like it) and I have the very latest ovi map installed with a full year of free subscription (donated by Nokia DK).

So I would like to ask to all those who have already installed the newest ROM a simple question:
"If you could go back in time, would you still choose to install OM v.2.0 on your N97 ?"

Or to put it in another way:
Would you recomand to those who still haven't updated to v 2.0 to wait until the bugs are (hopefully) ironed out, or maybe to postpone indefinitely the upgrade because what we would get with v. 2.0 is even worse of what we got now?
