Dropped P800 3 storeys!

41 replies · 7,070 views · Started 14 March 2003

So I leant out a window 2nite, to feed some squirrels some nuts. The later, i wondered where my phone was. We tried ringing it, then I heard my ringtone faintly from outside. It had falled 3 storeys onto Concrete and mud. I ran down, and apart from some scratches on the ear peice, it is fully functional. Good fortune or good build quality?

Its a miracle it didnt' shatter or crack. The screen didnt' even get dirty. The scratches are annoying me now, but I hope that a SE service centre might be able to replace the housing. We shall see...

It could have been a lot worse. A lot. 3 storeys. It fell a long way. But it works. Thank god.

thats incredible i couldn't help but laughing! i actualy did the same thing but from ground level but the funny thing was it was that same day i had read a post about a guy dropping it and the screen breaking! I didn't even wanna pick it up i was so scared, anyway 2 make a long story short only the stylus poped out. 😃

3 tests...

1 scratched casing
1 cracked screen- but if you replace the screen does it still work?
1 popped out stylus

Hmm not bad.

997 tests to go...

Yeah the scratched casing is a nuisance, but no cracked screen. From the looks of things i was exceptionally lucky.

Enceladus, the cracked screen was the phone of someone that GUEST read (post #4). GUEST's own phone was the number 3 test. The one where the stylus popped out.

He he.

Take care of your P800's

I was the guy that broke his screen... not quite a 3 story drop, only from about wiast high as I was pulling it out of my holster and then down onto concrete. Someone from the forum hooked me up with a new screen and a spare and my P800 is working just fine now. I only say "someone" because he emailed me privately and I am not sure if he wants to advertise or not. But many many kudos. I've enclosed a pic of my toasted screen.

Nice work skurtis.

Anyone want to send me a few spare screens? I think its only a matter of time. 😮ops:

by the way guest post # 4 that was me from my work computer ,had to do a complete system restore today and i thought i had logged in enabled.
yeah beside the stylus poping out there is also a tiny dent, no biggie though, i was way too thankfull it was alive!

Anyone wanna send some more test drops?

I guess i did waist drop my P800 a couple of times. Can't find a scratch though. So no pics.

From your stories, the build quality of P800 amazed me.

Where is the place of production of P800?

I am in Hong Kong, and rumours said P800 (english/Chinese version) to be released here are made in Malaysia. Does anyone know if it's true? If it was, I will be a scared man to drop it from one metre above ground....

A rep in the orangeshop dropped the p800... waist high, he cracked the screen and the flip was snapped off. So don't go testing your phones 😉

I did try it with a Nokia, a 7650, but not from a window, tried the old car driving over it test! Not even a scratch. Speaks volumes.

whats wrong with malaysian workers? where would we be as a nation without malaysian workers?

a damn site poorer is my answer so give them a break (for lunch)

not bloody likely

:agrue: get back to work malaysian

Well I'd like to see the P800 having a metal-frame like the T39m had, or a metal-case like the Palm m-Series. That would give me a much better feeling handling the Phone.

I did some undaunted by death moves a few times to catch my P800 when falling off e.G. a table. Must look quite funny for the viewers, especially combined with my panic mine 😉

To Guest:

a damn site poorer? What did you mean by that?

Everyone deserves the right to comment. I did not intend to attack Malaysian workmanship.

Actually SE had signed a contract to outsource production to Flextronics, a Singapore based factory. But there have to be a reason why P800 English version still made in France and not in Singapore. Not sure it was for quality, tax, transporation or tariff reasons? For a top model like P800, at least chinese version must get the same treatment as that of English version. Or else.

malaysians work for pennys so we get cheap goods, thats what i mean.

:agrue: you have missed a stitch (slap) no sleep for you

Hehe, my friend used to have a Siemens S25. One day we decided to head down to Drayton Manor Park, (its a theme park for all that dont know) anyway, we went on this one ride, can't remember the name, but it was about 25 meters high and span around (as most do).

Well, the climax of this ride was when it hung you upside down for a while leaving everyone screaming etc, at this point my friend who was sitting in front of me turned round to say something, as he did his phone slipped out of his inside pocket, through the neck of his jacket, past his face and dropped past my head at quite a considerable speed, there was a loud crack as the phone hit the metal railing on the ride carriage and the phone span off towards the ground. 😮

After the ride finished we ran over to the attendant and asked if he'd seen anything fall, he pointed at the ground, there was the battery, sim-card and front-casing but the rest was nowhere to be seen. We enquired again and the guy said he saw something drop into a large pool of water (about 10cms deep) near the drive motor of the ride, we asked him to have a look and he produced the almost unscathed body of the phone, and the ariel. The only part we were unable to locate was the small piece of plastic which fits flush with the back of the battery but has no useful purpose. :-?

We assembled the phone and attempted to turn it on, nothing. I suggested we leave it a while before giving up because it had got very wet. So on the way home we placed it over the air-con vent in the car, and to our complete surprise the thing worked after 30mins of drying. It took 2 days for the condensation to clear from the screen and there was a small scratch on the bottom of the cover but the old phone is still working to this day, and my friend still uses it as a backup phone. 😊😊 😃

Which is a damn sight more than I can say for my old S25, on which the screen went dead after about 3 months use. 😞

On that note has anyone noticed how almost indestructable the Nokia 'express-on' phones are? You can gaurentee that when you drop them the covers will fly off, but this seems to act as a shock-absorber and the actual phone it perfectly alright. Bloody good idea in my opinion.

I left my p800 in the back of my Syclone (pickup) along with two 15" steel wheels and four 19" alloy wheels. After half an hour on the freeway (Norwegian freeway that is, not too good 😊 ) i was going to make a call and remembered where i put it.

The p800 was completly disintegrated 😊

5 reported tests...

1 scratched casing
1 cracked screen- Replaced Screen and works again!
1 popped out stylus
1 dropped knee high- scracked screen again.
1 left at the back of the pickup- disintegrated

Hmm getting interesting.

Any other good test reports?

995 tests to go...

Ooh.. Phone trashing topic! 😃 My old Siemens phone, the one with yellow cover and water/dust/etc resistence. I used to swing it around my finger, with the strap.. One fine day the thing snapped and the phone flew straight into the wall. Freaked me out, but no damage. 😮 😃
Someone from the forum hooked me up with a new screen and a spare
@skurtis

what did you pay for the screen , not that i need one , but if the price is not to high i can stop worrying about the screen .

@Guest - now that you mentioned it. I had the Philips Genie. The first voice dial phone. Anyway, it was in my pocket when an officemate pushed me to the swimming pool. Was wearing a shirt and pants then. Took me some time to realize that my phone was in my pocket. When i pulled it off my pocket, i showed it to my officemate to his horror. It cost $570. And that was a lot of money 6 years ago.

Anyway, i just let it dry and after 2 days it was working again.

P800 Drop. I was kinnda drunk, all my mates had been drawing in my Jotter all night, when i got i back, it slipped trough my fingers, approx 1.5 M to a hard wood floor, slided almost 5 meters because i tried to kick it before touching the ground. Dosn't have any scratches yet, also dropped it a couple of times, but not worth to mentiong.

I read about a guy who dropped his old style iBook from a 4th floor window, just a few scratches. A week later he left it on the roof of his car and drove off, it fell and got run over by a jeep, this time it wasn't so lucky 😊
