On cue, the Sony Ericsson Satio gets an update, to "R1C"

There's no need to hack or edit firmware to use it as you seem to suggest. I really don't know where you heard that from.

Also, Samsung haven't only released updates in Italy, but in a number of other countries as well, including the UK.

Simple quick way (one of many, no doubt). Start watching a video, it plays in landscape. Tap the 'Back' icon.

Wikipedia seems to differ here. Anyone in Italy able to confirm when it was first available there?

FACT: Both Samsung and SonyEricsson have NOT licensed RedBend's FOTA service, which is why it is not available on ANY of their Symbian devices.

Sony Ericsson are HUGE Red Bend licensees. They just haven't been able to apply the technique to the Satio yet, probably because S-E are very new to S60. Doubtless it will appear in a firmware update via SEUS.

I can't reproduce the crashing. I've started a video playing in landscape mode from the Media application and I've hit the back icon. Everything works as normal.

Please provide more detail.

Can't really provide more detail. It's a hard reset Satio, with a few movies on the microSD card. Tried various (undemanding) videos in different formats, same result. Once 'Back' is hit, the Media app is frozen and this then has an effect on the rest of the phone. This is an unbranded unit, by the way, not a network firmware.

My Satio is still in the service cntre waiting for the replacement part to arrive. Apparently the phone is so new that they do have it stock. They have identified the malfunctioned part that is responsible for being able to activate the SIM pin code. Apart from this, the UI is not responsive & somehow when speaking through the phone (Loudspeaker not activated) it sounds kind of funny which I do not know how to describe it. You just know that it doesn't sound right.
In view of all these, I have bought a N97 Mini while my Satio is still hospitalized. So far I have no issue with the Mini. I would go as far to say that it is a better phone in every aspect except the camera & the screen (smaller). I am not a Nokia, SE or Samsung's fanboy. I buy a phone based on its OS, features & performance irrespective of what brand.

Yep, that works perfectly for me. In both the old and new firmware! (yes, T-Mobile got their branded version updated 2 days after initial release)

I haven't made it crash yet using this new firmware, but there's still a multitude of usability bugs in it.

FOTA is in the BASE S60v5 software, so I really really doubt SE couldn't make it work if they wanted to. Compared to the Samsung i8910 / Omnia HD, they've actually removed some of the FOTA functionality, at least from the interface on branded devices!

My Satio has finally been discharged from the SE's hospital so to speak today after having spent 10 days in there.
The replaced the complete screen as it was found to be defective. (Screen was not responding to input at all after having used the phone for 19 days to be exact) & downloaded with the latest software.
My initial reaction to the latest software is: more responsive than before almost tha same as my N97 Mini.
I think there is still room for improvement with another 1 or 2 more software upgrades.
Having said that, I still missed the solid feel of the Mini & the Satio feels so plastiky.
Although Satio has an edge in the camera dept, slightly bigger screen & a lens cover over the Mini.
Would I buy another SE using a new OS like the X10? Don't think so.
I shall wait for the next version of the S60 touchsreen OS next year in a Nokia hardware.

Hi Steve,

I have an O2 Satio. The firmware number matches the one you mentioned. I'm having no such stability issues (I've had to reset it twice in 4 days, not bad for a relatively new device) so do you think there's the possibility that even though the version number matches, O2 have done some extra work to get rid of the issues? I personally don't see how they would have the expertise to do this (Orange maybe, or Vodafone, but I'm not aware of O2 having any pedigree in Symbian OS development)
