N97 running like a dream!

It's taken a while to get there, but I have to say, since the Nokia service centre did a reflash, and Opera 10 Beta 2 came out (no memory problems now), I've been really pleased with the phone.

It's running pretty quickly with not many freezes or delays in responding to requests.

But I have to say, the new Opera is really really good. The main issue for me on the standard browser was the sluggish scrolling, especially on large sites like BBC. I always compared it to the Iphone browser with zips round page really slickly. Well, I think Opera pretty much matches it, not to mention is having a really rich interface.

I'm happy, and finanly feel I have the phone I was expecting to get when I bought it. 😃

Okay, how much are they paying you? 😉

It's gotten mighty quiet around here lately.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that this new Nokia Pilot program is just a way to get free beta testers (or is the N97 still in alpha test mode?) who have to agree not to talk about what they are doing as part of the program (one way to shut up the complainers).

In all seriousness...if I could just get the Nokia Maps to work correctly, I could say the same thing.

The reason it's got quiet around here is that users who repeadtedly post on AAS simply to complain and bitch about N97 problems are now being challenged to do something positive...
...get warranty repairs that are available, hard-reset to clear the device of crap, and stop installing unreliable apps & restoring incompatible backups between FW versions.

I have been a Nokia pilot for years and so far have NEVER been selected to test anything, more's the pity. I wouldn't mind pre-release FW for the chance to test (and keep) the latest handsets.
(R U Listening Nokia??? lol)

I'm not finding mine too slow to switch between stuff - this may or may not be due to some additional software I purchased during the first week of having the phone - to wit Handy Taskman. I did consider a similar freebie piece of software but they made it too hard to install, so I paid some pennies for good and supported software.

Neil

I never could get on with Nokia Maps on the N95 so never did hold any great expectations for it on the N97. Thats why I installed Google Maps during the first week too.

I've just upgraded that software today. Lots of new features, but one backward step I feel.

The older software shared favourites with Nokia Maps - both installed these favourites in the Location program.

Now, whilst Google Maps reads in these locations as starred places, anything you then star in Google Maps is purely local to that application and is not shared via Location with Nokia Maps.

So you have to think of "Hard Star" and "Soft Star" now.

I've come down with a severe case of n97 apathy as it goes...

It'll never be a shiny device for me I'm afraid, simply because of the level of crap i've had to put up with to get it working properly...

Just waiting for my contract to be over...

Sorry you've had so many problems. In truth, the only ones I've really had have been down to the hardware issues which everyone suffered from, and now those are fixed too.

So yes, it is now a shiny device in my eyes.

I remember when I first obtained the N95. People were slagging that off too - and again, I hardly suffered any issues. Perhaps I'm just lucky, or maybe me treating these things as computers, rather than as phones, is the correct attitude.

I jinxed it. I knew I shouldn't have said that my N97 was running great (except for Nokia Maps).

I got a Nokia Pilots notification earlier today, downloaded the software and began following instructions and (ominous tympani tones with pendulous storm clouds overhanging my location)...

Got the WSOD.

Tried numerous things to get it back to boot.

Finally had to do the vulcan death grip.

Everything wiped. Ten hours to reload everything.

I'm glad that I did a backup of my data the other night.

I come here on this forum daily with the hope that they comeup with something usefull as mine is a nightmare so far and just to let you guys know that i have not installed any untrusted softwares on this peace of sh.....t agrrrrrrr.....😡

If you're near one, maybe you should go to a service centre and get a re-flash - seemed to work wonders on mine (assuming you're already on V20?).

2 questions...

1. Is your handset network branded, User De-Branded, or Sim-Free/Generic?
2. Have you considered sending the handset in for repair in case there's a hardware fault.

Most owners, with V2-0 FW and the GPS/Lens-cover hardware repairs done are having few if any issues.

Sim-Free/Generic

Mines been in for GPS, a new touch screen and a re-flash.

They didn't have any lens covers so it has to go back for that.

The nightmare continues.. 😡

Hours redownloading the latest maps data, my backed-up contacts and HandySafe (I can't live without it! ) data.

Left it plugged in overnight to charge and this morning...

Accuweather and Facebook have disappeared from the home screen!

Not only that, they are not even in the list of applications to put on the home screen. BUT...they are listed in the Installed applications.

Looks like tonight I am going to have to reflash the firmware, wipe all memory and start all over again! 😡

Maybe I should rethink this Nokia Pilots program if the programs they give me to test end up messing up my N97 where I have to spend hours reinstalling everything?

I think your last sentence says it all. Install Beta/Un-tested/Un-known apps at your peril.

Hours downloading maps? You mean you didn't copy the Cities folder from mass memory onto your PC before you wiped the handset? 15 mins m8, that's all it takes.

Why re-flash the firmware? Exactly the same FW will be installed. Hard Reset, yes, re-flash FW no. Complete waste of time.

NEVER restore a full Nokia backup, (contacts, calendar entries etc are ok). Kiss of death to restore a full Nokia backup IME.

Was the N97 working fine before you restored your backup and installed all your apps? (incl. recent Nokia Pilot download which is when the trouble started?)
If you restore the same backup and reinstall all the same apps, the same issues will most likely happen again.

Sorry you're having such a Sh**e time of it, but if it's a rogue app or rogue restore of corrupt/incompatible backup data, then you need to NOT re-use/re-install them.

By the way, do you have a MicroSD Card? If so, keep a copy of all your SIS and JAR installation files on there then you can re-install all apps in under 1 hour.
How many apps do you have to re-install? If it's over 20 (excluding games) I would say you are installing lots of apps you really don't need and rarely genuinely use.

I was just going on what the Nokia guy at the service centre told me - he said that home flashes can leave bit of the old OS on there.... might be rubbish, but that's what he said.

Nokia? What do they know! Lol

Seriously though, the FW flash (via NSU, OVI Suite or OTA) doesn't overwrite user data area of memory so some old SETTINGS and parts of old APPS may be left over. A Hard-Reset completely wipes both internal memory and Mass Memory (but doesnt wipe a MicroSD card). I think the confused engineer is mistaking NSU with the service software, Phoenix, which he will use, and which DOES a complete wipe during FW upgrades.

There's no real harm in re-flashing (except if it goes wrong you end up with a brick!) but as it doesnt format internal and mass memory it doesnt clear any software problems. Only a hard reset will do that.

It says one web is not compatible with the N97, but what exactly is it because the site is just a submission page for your mobile number?
