Nokia Update N95 and N95 8GB firmware to v35

Shame I finally sold my N95 a week ago.. poor old thing would have been nice to see the "final" firmware version .. still IMO the N95 is best phone Nokia has made.

I have an N97 but I got a Satio because it has XENON.. the 12Mpix was a bonus. No I don't want to lug a DSLR around. Yes I prefer an integrated device.

What a shame the xenon/led debate has taken over this thread.

Actually, this is patently bollocks. Flash is more useful during the day. If you've got a proper camera, you'll typically find that flash is too powerful for straight on shooting - resulting in burnt out highlights. It also tends to kill any atmosphere by making your room look brightly lit.

On a phone, any sort of flash is typically too weak for anything that isn't very close.
Where it is useful is during the day - it lifts a picture on a gloomy day and lights up backlit subjects on a bright day that would end up silhouetted.

The Alliterator wrote:It is plainly obvious to all that in order to take a decent near-subject image in low light would normally be better lit with a Xenon flash. But it you want a decent picture WHY ARE YOU NOT USING A CAMERA?

Because you might want to take a picture, but not have your normal camera to hand.

A poxy phone cannot take a decent picture, regardless of whether you have a super multi-slave remote flash and reflector/softener, or a simple unlit shutter.

Again - bollocks. The device does not a camera make. A camera phone can take a good picture, in that it can capture the moment. Indeed, the quality of the pictures from a phone camera is something to be exploited, much as Lomography highlights the quirks of cheap plastic lenses.

LED will NEVER be as good as Xenon - period...................................

I am in the exact same phone situation as you I have owned the N82 for 18Months and now on the N86 for 18 months, been a Month now.

you have taken the words right out of my mouth so ill just add

I mainly use my phone for club, night, going out party shots, im not a person that takes photos of scenery etc and even when I do the phone obviously still very capable of daylight shots its not been denied, using my N86 the shots are not as bright as the N82, I feel myself not taking as many pictures knowing it does not have a flash, so what if everyone is lit up being washed out as in not showing their true pigmentation, better than not being seen at all or blurred, at least I can see the people! (I do not actually agree with the argument but even so).

The only advantage of the LED is flash, so I can use it as a torch. I wont put the phone down for this but I do not use it for Video recording for my purposes, how pissed off would people get if I lit up the place while taking a video and blinding them? The only place I could see it being used is if your taking a video of some spider in the dark or something.

The Alliterator wrote:The Xenon Xealots will not ever accept that their flash is not the be all and end all of a phone. It is no use trying to talk to them, they are even worse and more obnoxious than Mac xealots.

Make my phone more expensive by upgrading a secondary function with expensive unnecessary complication, and I won't buy. I already have a camera that no phone could ever compete with.

Alas, the xenon xealots will demand an extra sequin for their dresses and it will cost us all.

If Nokia got one thing right, it was to drop xenon.

Thats the same arguemtn anyone uses with anything a device does not have.

Not a good camera? not meant to be good, buy a dedicated camera
Not a good camcorder? not meant to be good, buy a dedicated camcorder

The Nokia 6220 classic expensive?

The Nokia N82 was way cheaper (not additional charge) than me getting the N95 on contract few months after the N82s release!! (25pm).

So I've gone and updated by N82 to V35.

Had to go back to a PC to do it and then danced the dance that NSU takes you through - you know, the one where you follow all the instructions, look at a page that says "Updating software - 15 minutes remaining" for 30 minutes and then says that the computer's lost the connection with the phone - even though it's sitting 10cm away connected with the USB cable.

Then I followed all the instructions to reconnect - take the battery out, remove the charger, divide 43 by 7, rub my tummy whilst patting my head, reconnect the cable, sing Old MacDonald four times, in Greek, reinsert the battery, press the power button for 1 second and click retry. And this time it worked. Always takes two goes - four successive firmware updates always do the same thing!

Can't tell the difference to be honest - I've looked all over the phone and it all seems the same. Even the free memory is the same. But I am sure there's something under the hood that's been improved. Surely?

On a more positive note, nothing's been wrecked. I still have all of my data, and the latest build of Ovi Maps. So maybe something will become apparent otherwise I will wait to hear what more knowledgeable people come up with.

I understand that the Xenon topic is really important and close to the hearts of N82 users like me but I hate to see this thread hijacked as this is also a pretty important thread.

v35 seems like a practical joke by Nokia on its users as there is nothing new. NOTHING AT ALL. I can't wait to see the changelog. To be honest, long list of under the hood changes would make me even sadder as it would mean that firmware was still unfinished.

hello,

is there any news on changes with this firmware?? I don't want to have to go through the hassle of updating when my user data will be wiped if there's no obvious worthwhile changes.....

Also, is there, or will there ever be, a way to update using a Mac??

Thanks

Why does every article in here about N82 turns out to be a Xenon argument?? Get over it people.. Xenon is good but not every phone has it.. yes.. your N82 is the best because of the Xenon..

There are no visible changes whatsoever. It was probably just an update to catch up with changes in DST start/end dates of some country.
It's the mobile phone analogue of a postmortem spasm. 😊

A flash does not a camera make Mr Bollocks. I thank you for hoisting yourself with your own petard.

You also proved my comment about the obnoxious xealot.

err....when did the release of a firmware update turn into an argument about LED/Xenon flashes?

Unregistered wrote:err....when did the release of a firmware update turn into an argument about LED/Xenon flashes?

err....when was the law passed that prohibited discussions from wandering off topic?

I just installed the 35.0.002 update to my N82 ( product code 0561047 of Indonesia region). The installation update file is 118.1 MB, installed by using compatibility mode on my Windows 7 operating system. I haven't seen any differences. Yet, it's a good refreshment for my one year old Nokia N82. A very reliable phone ever, working as it should be. I'm happy with this. Cheers, from Malang, Indonesia.

Ignoring what all you guys are ranting about and posting what most of us actually want to see about this thread:

I have updated to v35 and it seems to be quite a bit quicker. Nothing new on the surface so all under the bonnet from the looks of it. Same n-gage application with fifa 08, asphalt and snakes demos.

The main difference I saw was the boot up process after the nokia holding hands logo was MUCH quicker (when you see the active standby, then it goes for a few seconds before you can fully start using your phone). On v31, it was around 30 seconds for me but is only a few now.

I think the WLAN freezing the phone causing you to have to take out the battery has also been fixed as I have not froze on WLAN atm (touch wood!).

After removing the n-gage trial and symbian os pips etc. and the welcome vid, I was left with around 123mb of free space on c: (out of 133, 92.4% is not bad!). Free RAM on boot is still around 90mb.

Wonder why there is no change-log but can also confirm v35 allows install of unsigned apps if you do the y:\sys\bin\installserver.exe trick 😉

What trick is that? Don't think I heard that one before

How about the call log? Do all of your calls still show up with mobile icons?

n82er wrote:What trick is that? Don't think I heard that one before

Simply copy the version of installserver.exe that allows you to install unsigned apps to y:\sys\bin\ (make the directories if they don't exist) then upgrade your phone. As y: is not written to during the upgrade but is read, you can install any new unsigned apps such as rp on v35. Only do-able on phones with a y drive so not the n95-1 I believe.

On another update, after applying a few tweaks to my phone, there seems to be some new kind of protection mechanism present... For example, I killed FavouritesSrv.exe from jbak so I could delete the default bookmarks database as its full of junk and the phone cripples slightly then I got some diagnostic message saying "Application closed: JbakTaskMan ViewSrv 11" or something like that. Deffo not in pre v35 phones to hmmm. Similarly, been getting bluish boxes in the top right corner of the screen with messages such as "Copied" when I c&p text in and out of field and "Plat 31" when I boot up. Not sure if its jbaktaskman but definitely something new going on under the plastered s60 ui IMHO as it still does it when I close jtm

They have also FINALLY fixed the "use number" thing in log e.g. you get a phone call from someone who is not in contacts and want to save their number to contacts or sms them - previously it used to quickly close messaging or contacts before you could save but this seems fixed - one thing that used to drive me crazy previously!

All calls still seem to show mobiles in log.

Has this hit the EURO1 product code yet? I'm not getting it...

as far as this forum is concerned, we were talking about the firmware update and not xenon versus led versus hell knows who!

First of, thanks to Nokia for giving new life to both the N82 and N95. Such great and very wonderful devices of their time and up to now they STILL live up to their moniker.

And as for the Flash Wars; cut it out! it all depends on your creativity and your ability to make your device as competetive as ever. If you cant make it work for you then you definitely wasted money! Piece of advice; these devices will not adapt to our own preferences - rather it is US and always US who are to adjust to the way they perform, 'nuff said.

It all depends on YOU.

Hi, I just updated my N95 8GB to this latest FW, but I'm getting an error while trying to run the music player!
I go like I always did, Menu->Music->Music Player and then, when the "Now playing" should come up, I only get the pop-up window saying "General: System Error". And only blank screen shows up.
I can still use the phone, it doesn't freeze or anything, but this is quite serious for me, since the 8GB memory for all my music was one of the reasons to buying this phone.

But what I've noticed, when I press *#0000# and the FW window shows up, it's says this:
V 35.0.001
11-11-09
RM-320
(c) Nokia N95 (06.01)
from what I've found on the internet, shouldn't the last line be something like "...(07.xx)"?

I used Ovi PC Suite to update my phone and I also tried it with Nokia Software Updater, but I got same result.
My product code is the one for EURO3 region, and during the update nothing unusual occured.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi everyone do any of you know how i can get my old software back on to my N95 8gb phone i need the old version 20.0.016 software back on my phone to get it back up & running again its just that i have updated my phone to the latest software which i think is version 30.0.025 with out backing the old software up first Thankyou .

Anyone but me experiencing terrible internet connection problems since the upgrade to my N95-3?

Hi all, updated my N82 firmware to v35. Before updating i took backup and did a hard reset. Update went smooth and quick. I dont know i am right these are the changes

1. video ringtone
2. theme icon on standby apps
3. reboots quickly

Noticeable increase in speed.

1 - Has had video ringtones since the day it came out, on all flavours of firmware.
2 - Not sure what you mean by this.
3 - Possibly noticing this too myself, but as ever, after a clean update, the question is, is it the firmware, or a general tidying up casued by installing it.

Pleased it went well for you though.

For me, one update (my silver N82) failed halfway through, and required no less than FIVE re-attempts at connect to finish the install (and lot's of nervous moments).

At the end of it, this had not adhered to any UDP - ALL data and settings were lost.

On my other Black N82 however, it updated first time, and kept all data, settings, and stuff fine.

Go figure *lol*
