which sat nav software

So it seems that after my N97 had the v2.0 software my GPS is finally working.
My question now is, which software.
Nokia Maps with paid subscription?
Google Maps?
Route 66?

I am normally using a HP Ipac and TomTom 6.0, and have always loved it I am just trying to cut down on my devices.

I would like to hear your experinces and knowledge.

Cheers
Mike

You missed out Garmin XT. Each to their own, the choice is almost endless!
(I would discount TomTom on S60 OS though, as it's not been updated for several years now, due to high piracy rates).

I was a TomTom fan (well, familiar with it!) on older S60/UIQ platforms but always needed a GPS dongle - I liked the GPS option in the N97 and even liked Ovi Maps during the trial period but I think their cost model is ridiculous.

So after much deliberation and desire for a decent budget option I went for Navmii and paid 30 for UK and Ireland coverage.

This gives me the full software, POI's including gatso's etc and you get a 12 month subscription allowing you to download any updates during that period. After the 12 months is up the software will continue to operate but without further updates.

On the whole I have been really impressed with the software and think it is well worth the money.

It may not be quite so user configurable (what's on the display etc) as other software but it is reliable and very easy to get use when familiar with it.

That's my tuppence 😃

I think Ovi Maps (the version off betalabs) is a great bit of software, but it is a shame you can't pay a one off navigation fee, and the price for long term subscription is way too high, considering most other options are no more than 60 one off and Ovi is close to that for a years subscription.
That said I'm just a very occasional user so am pretty happy paying the odd 1.50 or whatever for a days navigation subscription considering how well it works (since GPS fix!).

If you want to try it for a while then when I installed Dad's Cab from Ovi Store it gave me a free weeks subscription when I quit the program, you can activate it whenever you like then just uninstall Dad's Cab (pointless app) - worked great for my weeks holiday last year 😊

Is Garmin officially released for v5 yet? Or does it just work fine with the most recent release? I was very tempted by that on the N95 but had TomTom working with an external GPS and when I last checked it wasn't available for N97.

Sygic Mobile Maps (http://www.sygic.com/) is my personal preference. Standalone so that it doesn't matter what the network coverage is like wherever you happen to be, and you don't need to worry about data transfer. Especially good if you are already used to the TomTom interface. Sygic is part of TeleAtlas, which is now owned by TomTom.

I Use Garmin XT mobile and work beautifully just updated the maps with 2010 excellent result and very happy 😊

Had a look at the Sygic (Thanks KamHo) which looks very nice, I might give that a try.

Navmii will for the time being only do UK & Ireland, and I do go to the rest of Europe quite a bit, so for now it's not good enough.

Thank you all for your quick response and suggestions.

Cheers

As an ex-TomTom adept (used it from 1.x onward) I have tried Garmin, Route66, Navigon, Tomtom, Amaze, Nokia Maps and Sygic and ended with Sygic (initially McGuider, but this has now moved to Sygic Mobile Maps).

Reasons why I liked the rest less:
- Garmin: can't get used to the way it is zooming, plus the 3D map's perspective looks unnatural.
- Route66: Too little information on the nav screen itself, I like to see the Time Remaining, Distance to destination, etc. on 1 screen.
- Navigon: Looks nice graphically, but I don't like the searching for addresses, plus same issue as with Route66: too little info on the nav screen.
- TomTom: simply doesn't work with internal GPS on a normal way and TT6 gets a little outdated.
- Amaze: Waaaaaayyyyyyyy too slow, though a very big plus: it is FREE
- Nokia Maps: I really DON'T like the address destination entry. When the phone is in its holder on the windscreen, I really can't operate it.

Sygic looks a LOT like TomTom and is therefore easy to operate, I guess. Though it also has its limitations so here and there. I really miss the option to navigate to a contact in my address list. One other thing it is missing, is navigate to a POI which is on your current route. The final thing it is missing (in my opinion) is traffic info.

Hope this info helps a little!

Navmii looks interesting, but don't wanna shell out my cash before trying it. Anywhere to get a trial version? I've got Garmin at the mo, but it seems a bit jerky at high speeds.

If you get in touch with Navmii I think they will send you a link to a trial version. However, in my opinion, the product is not finished yet. I bought it, but then discovered and went and bought Sygic Mobile Maps to replace it.

Navmii released an update to the symbian version mid December 2009 which has made it a lot more 'friendly' so definitely worth a punt i'd say 😊

There is also one called NDrive which runs fine on the N97 has a very easy to use operating system good up to date maps and gives excellent routing. I personally find it much better than Garmin and Nokia Maps.

get it fixed then buddy 😊 only takes a little while if you find a place that has the parts 😊

from what ive heard well worth it too

Thank you all for your help, I decided to give Sygic a try and purchased it.

My first thoughts are.

The download are 1.9 Gb so I would recommend fast Internet, in my case their server was very slow and it told me it would take 7 hours, so I just left it to do it's business while I went to work😊

The file it self contains versions for Windows, Android and Symbian/Symbian Touch, which is ok.

You install it to your pc and it installs a program called Sygic Assistant, in here you select which maps to install and language etc. In my case Nokia N97(which works perfectly well) what surprised me was you can't select which platform, so it installs them all on your phone (Windows and Android and Symbian), I find that a bit weird to say the least, you then manually have to select which one to install on your phone.

I then spent some time deleting the unwanted versions, and modify the .ini file for safety nagscreen and some setup including activation.

I took the first drive last night from Dovedale(derbyshire) to Derby, and it performed perfect kept me straight on the road no problems what so ever.

This was using the internal GPS on the N97, it took a bit of time to actually lock on to the satelites, but after that it was perfect. I wonder if that means my GPS doesn't need to be fixed?

The only thing I can't get to work are the convertion of Favorites/POI from TomTom to Sygic, I have used the sygic converter, and I have converted from TomTom to tab delimeted file first. I placed them in the map folder, but no success at all.

Sorry for my long rant, just thought it might be useful for others.

Cheers
Mike
P.S It really is sooooo much like TomTom, that I thinkTomTom are involved in that company somehow apart from the Teleatlas connection.

Any of you Sygic users in the U.S.?

If so, how well does it perform here (Map data up-to-date and accurate?).

I still have problems with the Naviteq map data with Nokia Maps being wrong. I like in a major metropolitan area which should be thoroughly and accurately mapped, but surprisingly isn't.

The GPS in mine has always been fine provided that I didn't try to use Nokia's own Mapping Software! I tried various versions of Nokia Maps, but the GPS didn't work properly with any of them, although it works just fine with any other GPS software I care to throw at it.

In order to convert my POIs from TomTom to Sygic I found that I had to use a 2 stage process. First I used a freeware Ov2-csv-asc_2_Upi Translator, then I put the output of that through the Sygic POI converter to update the format. It seems that with some version of Sygic/McGuider they changed the format of the UPI files, so that the files straight out of the OV2_2_UPI translator were incorrect for POIs west of Greenwich.
