Continuous-autofocus camcorder phone Vivaz launched by Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson has just launched a new flagship media smartphone, the Vivaz, running S60 5th Edition and a tweaked version of the software in the Satio. It's a smaller device (think Nokia 5800), with 3.2" screen and available in silver, black, blue and 'ruby'. The star feature though is the camcorder functionality, with full 720p video capture and continuous auto-focus, a first in production phones. Stills are at 8 megapixels with single LED flash. Photos and more below.

hopefully this "tweaked version of the Satio video.." will actually find its way onto the Satio itself. Surely 720p capable, overall the Satio with XENON is a better media creation device - if it had this continuous focus ability.

How hard can it be?

This is interesting, look forward to reviews on this. Much better size and appropriate device for a phone New Symbian phones just keep appearing.

Very impressive dimensions considering the spec, great CPU speed (wonder if its an overclocked ARM Cortex like the Satio),design is also "interesting"...great to see more SE S60 devices...

is no one else seeing the similarity between this and the i8910?

So it's ideal for taking and sending to utube, video's of fat ladies in cars and idiots break dancing it the middle of the road. 😃

if this runs on the same platform as the satio and omniaHD, and manages to 720p videos at a smooth framerate whilst also having continuous autofocus, Samsung will have some 'xplanin to do!

This device is undoubtedly aiming to target the territory occupied by the Samsung i8910. Price will be key to determine the success of this aesthetically appealing and feature rich device. Sony Ericsson have in the past regrettably lessened the success of some of their devices by pricing them at far too higher price (the C905 feature device springs to mind). If the price is right this device could further popularise Symbian.

I am disappointed!!! Where are the xenon vs LED arguments??? It should be more intense here since it is SINGLE LED. 🙄

Or do these arguments start only when Nokia does it??

If you need xenon go for the satio. No point investing money on something which is already there in the portfolio. The satio will get an update which will make it at par with the vivaz once it launches. Nokia, if I am not mistaken, doesnt have that option.

I love the design...saw a few comparison photos on another website, and it makes the N97 mini and Satio look stodgy and "old-fashioned." But with Noia offering Ovi Maps for free now, will it work on this? I sure hope so.
