Ovi Maps with Free Navigation now in SW Update

Hmmm - saw the update fine , no problems in the SW Updater on the phone, so downloaded and it installed first time, without a problem.

Space on the C drive went down from crica 35mb to now 26mb.

However, I can't get the GPS to connect and get a location position. Previosuly, Maps would work pretty well, pretty good accuracy. Will go through Ian's step and step guide and see if that corrects anything, but will also try a re-install.

BTW - looked on phone SW udpater today, and no new FW update available. THe daft thing is I looked on Nokia Website yesterday, and it told me for my Porduct Code, the latest version is v12. ( I'm already on v20 ! )

Same here, the previous maps version was more accurate and GPS was good. However now it takes a while and more often it has to connect to server unlike before.

The fact that this baby is now free (even the traffic updates!) is just incredible! 😊

That's strange, I downloaded the maps update via the SW update on the phone, but it's still trying to charge me 15.99 for the year

Got it all working fine now. Managed to get in on hubbys N86 too!

Just a personal comment....

...this has gotta be the most popular thread I've ever started lol 😃

I tried using the navigation again today to get me from work to the nearest town. It took me along a route I'd never even considered, and the views of the High Peak hills were breath-taking! What surprised me the most was that it warned me (in a fashion) about speed cameras! I didn't know it had that feature...

In what way did it warn about the speed cameras?

Is it just me, or is the navigation voice very quiet?

I am sure I have it at full volume and I can barely hear it above the sound of the engine, and I have a quiet car.

I only glanced at the screen quickly (cos I was driving... obviously). It gave out a funny bleep, and when I turned to the screen I saw what looked like a speed camera behind a no entry symbol in the bottom left-hand corner. The phone was open (with keyboard exposed) at the time.

Yep the speed cameras are a nice addition, but unlike TOMTOM and other dedicated devices i don't think there is a way to update new ones via a download. So i suppose they only get updated with a new maps update.

I'd agree, they're probably updated with the maps... and there's no way of telling when new maps are out until you plug your phone into your PC.

Another thing missing is the ability to add custom voices. You have to stick with the ones Nokia give you.

jamessmith01 wrote:Just to clarify, is it possible to install the new Maps to E drive? Or only to C at this moment in time? Thanks.

As far as I know, the maps are always saved to the Mass Memory ( E:\ ) drive. It's GoogleMaps that saves to C:\

[EDIT] ...unless you were referring to the Maps application itself, in which case it can only be installed onto C:\ - Sorry for the confusion there.

Thanks for the info. I currently have 57.3 MB free on C:, and around 52 MB free RAM at startup. Not sure if I want to sacrifice what has been quite smooth running for this update! Is it worth it - any major improvements over 3.1?

Yes!

IMHO this is a big improvement, in a lot of areas, over previous versions.

Loads faster, UI is greatly improved.

With 54+MB on C: free I would certainly recommend it. :icon14:

Well, with around 25mb left on my C drive ( after installing the new Maps ) it still seems to function ok, so with a whopping 54mb, you should be quids in.

One nice little touch was also to show the nearest petrol stations when in navigation mode. I tried it out the otehr day - once I got it working properly. Have to say though that I ddin't have any problems with voice volume - it was loud enough to hearm though I did have the car stereo turned down - but the window was open so lots of traffic noise coming.

I think it is a little limited though, I wanted to do a search and soem of the categories are a little limiting, so cannot search for a Point of Interest in perhaps the same way as a dedicated Sat Nav unit - but hey ! It's free.

Down from 57.3 MB to 43.8 MB free on C: - pretty big drop! I'll monitor how stable it is with browsing and multi-tasking.

On first impressions it looks very nice. I noticed if I lose my internet connection, then try and run Lonely Planet or Weather, they won't work ("system error"😉. It gives no option of reconnecting or switching connection. I have to close Maps and re-open to get them to connect to the internet.
