Ovi Maps hits 3.4 - though in beta form

Just released this morning and still being installed chez-AAS (see below for comments during the morning) is Ovi Maps 3.4. This follows up the formal release of v3.3, which introduced the new interface and free worldwide voice navigation. In brief, Ovi Maps is claimed to be faster and more accurate. Watch this space for details.

Read on in the full article.

make ovi maps a killer application

make five years ahead of its competitor

this change log for the speed and accuracy have been magnified on Engadget's review about ovi maps vs google maps vs vz. 5, and this will make the Ovi Maps smarter than the others, but soon.😊

i checked on beta labs website and it's not version 3.4, its more like 3.04.

Install is a little slow, but with 25 meg free on the C: drive on my 5230, install went through fine 😃

I'll have a go driving the streets of southern berkshire ....

Makes a change but installed no problem onto my 5800 which had 14 mb space left. The whole set up looks very good and impressive. We just need a better range of car holders now and ones that allow you to connect to external power since the sat nav eates the battery.

"not version 3.4, its more like 3.04"

Sigh. Same thing. Give me some credit. One of the idiosyncrasies of Symbian OS. You'll get used to it.

"Can I delete v3.3 after installing the new version?"

No, you'd have to do what I did and delete it FIRST.

I deleted 3.03 before installing this. It takes up about 1 meg more on my 6710 than 3.03 did. I see the GPS status is no longer there. GPS signal is shown by the grey dot showing your position going red. That's nowhere on the beta labs site, they should really clarify. It does seem to lock faster.

Rolling it out for the rest of S60 3rd FP2 would be a more like it. God knows I can't use crappy old Ovi Maps 3.old forever.

Got greedy and wanted to check it out on my n86...

Worked! Except for the fact after using it it left my GPS indicator on (which can only assume it's left my GPS on) which is going to drain my battery an AWFUL lot... So back to 3.03

Works smoothly though

Steve

You cannot judge the sensitivity of the GPS antenna of the N97 on the basis of software like OVI Maps that put the position always on a street and that, in case of navigation, tends to follow the original itinerary for a while if you change directions.

Try instead Garmin Mobile (v5.5 or later) enabling position in GPS coordinates instead of always on a route (I do not know the right words in the English version). In that case, you can see that the GPS is very sensitive and can hear immediately all the changes of your direction.

I have both on my device and I saw this huge difference. Anyway, I prefer OVI Maps because it is much faster than Garmin for what concerns the re-calculations and for the management of the maps.

P.S.: I do not use neither the AGPS nor WiFi or web options on my N97

They've removed satelites' status bar :/. It was very handy, don't know why they did it.

Having huge issues getting this to install...

Keeps failing every time.

And in between, tells me 3.03 is still installed, do I wish to overwrite... then of course when it fails, it's NOT 3.03 left on, it's back to the older 3.01 version.

Then I try again, and it tells me 3.04 is already installed, do I wish to overwrite...

And then fails again - no matter how many re-boots I've tried.

Not good

(Nokia E72 here)

Installed on my 5800XM with no problems at all. It only took a few minutes.

I installed v3.04 straight over the top of v3.03 without issues. Also, it didn't seem to eat up much more space from the C: drive (less that 0.5Mb for my install).

Have a look at this:

As cheap as it gets, but it works perfect for the 5800... And all buttons etc. are also still funtional with this one !

One new thing I noticed. It seems that version 3.4 installed a new positioning method called Wi-Fi/Network. I guess that will help the positioning, so no need for Map Booster any more.
Also my position seems to be worse now when I'm indoors without GPS signal. It shows approximate position with a big red circle, but I'm nowhere inside that circle.

Yeah, I noticed new method too. It constantly switches between Wifi and 3G so you better have flat rate data plan.

I've downloaded the installer ready to go once I can expect not to receive any phone calls a bit later. I've noticed whilst going through my list of installed apps that I have both a Nokia Maps (9M) and an Ovi Maps (7M) installed on my C: drive. Now I thought I'd deleted the former before installing the latter when I went to install 3.03 so do we think its safe for me to delete both of these before running the installer?

Regards
Neil

You can switch off positioning server. That way it will only use methods that do not require network. It will still use Wi-Fi/Network positioning method though.

Just install it on top of 3.03 within few minutes without problem. GPS locking bar seems to be removed, which is really come in handy to see if the GPS is working ... GPS locking seems to be as normal ... Haven't really test drive it so not sure about the speed but seems ok ...

This is all wonderful news....but as an N95 user it makes me want 1 of 2 things......1. the S60 FP1 release, 2. to buy an N97........now, I wonder which one Nokia want me to do😎, it also makes me wonder if we are likely to see a FP1 release at all!!!

Thanks for the tip Steve. Never managed to get 3.3 installed at all, but have now got 3.4 by uninstalling "Nokia maps" first 😉. (Perhaps I could have used the same trick for 3.3, but why bother?)

The phone worked out (roughly) where I am, indoors with the curtains closed, pretty quickly. Won't get a chance to actually try it out outdoors before tomorrow though.

Julie

I successfully installed on N97 with 17.6MB free (with 3.03 deleted).

Looking very nice. The view options have been rejigged too (cogs on the map view)

Forgot to mention that after deleting the previous version, I had 25.something MB free on the C Drive, and now have 9.9MB, so looks like you need 15-16MB free for it to be able to install.

Installed, the new positioning method placed me a couple miles away, but it happened really fast, and slowly the accuracy increased. I wonder what they're doing, skyhook never found me in this place (tested right now with my ipod touch) and I was disconnected from any wifi network.

I think they're using cell tower triangulation, leaving the new positioning method's name kinda misleading? And what is "Network based" again?

Hi. Strange problem:con?. I can't download it from Beta Labs because I can't sign in to Beta Lab with my Nokia account. When I click on the sign in link it just throughs me can to the same page but not signed in. Then when I try to download the new Maps it tell me to sign in. I'm trapped in a vicious circle. Any way I can get the new Maps 3.4 without going to Beta Labs?

I think, i will degrade to v3.03, its because it's using just to much c: memory at 17.5MB this is not windows XP in hell, why don't they make with option to be able to install on E: memory card instead, and i don't like they have add few background running all time apps, as i found out every one or two minutes is connecting to gprs data transferring 4-6kb data out and taking 6-10, is that tracking or spying thing on that!
